The Assassin's Legacy

Chapter 22: CHAPTER 22:The Awakening

So this is how it's going to end" Leo thought smiling as he gave himself up to fate. The assassin's eyes closed waiting for the chill embrace of death but for some reason his head still stayed attached.

"Impossible" the reaper cursed looking at his dissolved scythe, frowning he tried again to conjure the scythe but cursed when the darkness around his hand quickly dissipated into the atmosphere.

"This could only mean one thing" the reaper thought fidgeting on noticing that the assassin kept on growing in size with dark blue fur coating his body. A strange feeling crept up his spine making the reaper consequently weak as he wondered what in the name of the fallen realms was happening.

Beneath the reaper Leo laid still on the ground waiting for the death that never came, shocked he got to his feet wondering why the reaper looked so small and why he kept on cowering in fear.

Taking a look at his hands Leo's eyes opened wide in shock at their massive size and the curved silver claws protruding from the gargantuan digits. Remembering the earlier stab to his heart, Leo placed a paw onto his chest and smiled when he felt nothing meaning that his wound had for some reason healed.

The reaper meanwhile looked at the figure in fear; an emotion that he did not know his kind could actually feel. The bipedal beast before him was seven-foot-tall, dark blue and feline looking with reverse jointed legs that had retracted silver claws. Bright blue eyes stared back at the scared reaper and a pair of sabre like fangs widened in a scary grin.

"What the hell is a Huntran doing here? The reaper asked no one in particular, twisting his hands in a circular position as another scythe successfully formed in his hands "Still I'm pretty sure I will be able to use his inexperience against him" the reaper smiled dispersing his fears, charging forward with the aim of murder. "He must be stopped before he truly awakens".Leo regained his composure quite quick and raising his right hand or rather paw, slashed at the air.

The reaper turned into smoke just in the nick of time before the deadly claws could meet his body. But to the surprise of both the assassin and reaper, the illusory claws ripped through the smoke quite fine; tearing the reaper's incorporeal body like it was flesh and blood. Black goo and maggots fell to the ground tainting the ground and leaving behind them a skeleton divided into four bony pieces.

"How? Leo asked himself confused on how his claws had managed to even lay a scratch on the reaper. And besides that there was this satisfying feeling he kept on experiencing anytime the reaper got close to him.

Hearing the painful groans of the reaper he began to move towards his prey but stopped when something in the air seemed wrong, following this instinct Leo moved to the left seconds before a silver sword travelled through his former position. Turning around he saw the headless elf's body running forward with clenched fists. "Something feels wrong" Leo thought when the same earlier feeling came back telling him that another presence was nearby.

Closing his eyes to focus on this strange instinct, Leo was confused when on opening them he found himself in some sort of dark void surrounded by bright blue lines that moved over and beneath each other to form some sort of grid. In this strange grid were two grey mists; swirling violently as they covered the distance separating them from the assassin.

Holding out both paws Leo swiped in the grid, an effort he performed to see whether any of this was real or just some vain hallucination. To his greatest surprise the grid around him responded to the swipe and in an instant lit up with bright lights as all the lines around him rushed forward, surrounding the two mists containing them in a massive grid like cage that kept on getting bigger as more lines left; leaving Leo standing in an empty pitch black void.

The assassin placed his hands forward groping around the space, still confused about whether all of this could be considered a dream until a loud noise like that of a thousand curtains being ripped into shreds ringed in his ear. Gritting his teeth Leo took a look at the bright blue grid cage before everything once again went blank…

*Cough* *Cough*

The sounds of the hoarse coughs woke Leo up who on getting to his feet took another look at his body but sighed when black fur confirmed that he was still in this weird 'hybrid' form.

Hearing the earlier coughs Leo turned to his right and there on the ground some meters away was an elderly male mage dressed in dark blue robes. "Who are you" Leo asked waiting for an answer while he unknowingly bared his fangs threateningly."I am Fang the Midnight panther" the mage replied with his head looking up to the sky as though he was mulling over some mysteries that only the heavens could solve. "Impossible" Leo retorted with a hoarse growl "The great Fang died a hundred years ago out of old age". The old mage hearing this threw back his hood to reveal a heavily scarred ebony face with two emerald earrings hanging from two slightly pointed ears. "You are both right and wrong" the old man said looking away from the sky and staring at Leo directly in the face "I am dead but it was definitely not out of old age". "Then how are you here? Leo asked sniffing the area and sighing when to his greatest surprise he couldn't pick up the old mage's scent or any scent for that matter. "Is this an illusion? Leo asked again, for that could be the only reason why he couldn't pick up a scent of anything."I cannot answer your first question but as for the second". The old man saying this, pointed at a small moth that seemed fixed in the air "The time around here has been paused". "This was necessary for there are some things that we must discuss". The old man after this snapped his fingers; thereby making a small crystal ball to appear in between the two."First let me explain how and why you possess these powers and also why it is imperative for you to know who and what you are". "And you need not worry about the reaper" the old man smiled before he tapped the crystal ball; which showed on its surface a dissected skeleton surrounded by numerous slashes that were embedded into the earth in a square formation with the skeleton pieces in the middle."He won't be worrying you anytime soon and his little elf helper has been chopped into pieces so little that even an eagle will find it hard to see them". "And now I shall start with everything about your people". "Your real people" the old man added tapping the crystal ball once more.
