The city didn't sleep that night.

The media raged like wildfire. Every screen in Gotham, every corner of Metropolis, even across the global web, blared the same words:

"THE CURSED ONES ERA BEGINS!"

A confident news anchor with a perfect smile faced the camera, her voice echoing across a brightly lit newsroom.

"Good evening, Gotham—and the world. Today marks the birth of a new force in the battle against villainy. The newly formed, government-sanctioned superhero team—The Cursed Ones—has made a devastating and public debut."

The screen behind her shifted, showcasing a collage of the chaos from earlier: explosive clashes, streaks of lightning, Croc's charred remains, and Bane's twisted corpse surrounded by rubble.

"According to verified reports, Four of Gotham's most infamous criminals were killed in under twelve hours. Riddler, Two-Face, Killer Croc, and Bane—all gone."

She tapped her earpiece.

"Government sources confirm that all Four including Black Mask who died a week ago at the hands of Jason Anderson, were all on a classified Death List, pre-approved for immediate termination under lethal engagement protocol. While the list itself remains sealed, the Department of Justice released a short statement…"

The screen switched to a recording of a government spokesperson at a podium.

"These individuals were not victims. They were monsters whose repeated crimes had already earned them federal-level death penalties. The Cursed Ones are not rogue vigilantes. They are a targeted solution to a city drowning in repeat offenders and political stalemates."

Back to the studio.

"While public support for the team grows rapidly, critics have emerged from both domestic and international human rights organizations."

The screen split into clips of activists protesting in front of government buildings.

"Many argue that executing criminals without a trial, even ones with death sentences, is a violation of due process, and that it sets a terrifying precedent for state-sanctioned executions."

The anchor turned serious.

"In a surprising response, officials claim that the legal framework for The Cursed Ones includes pre-designated kill authority, backed by sealed court orders and Congressional approval. Which, for many... raises more questions than answers."

The scene cut to a special interview screen.

Lucius Fox sat in a sleek black chair. The logo of Wayne Enterprises glowed faintly behind him.

"I'm disappointed. Deeply," he said, adjusting his glasses. "The Anderson family has always been known for power and ambition. But to take this path—this brutal, merciless crusade—and pass it off as justice? It's not just short-sighted. It's inhumane."

He leaned forward.

"Gotham has always walked a delicate line. When we cross that line—when killing becomes our go-to option—we lose something far more dangerous than criminals. We lose the soul of our city."

Back to the anchor.

"While Fox's words have struck a chord, others believe this is the only way Gotham survives. The Anderson family has yet to release an official response, though whispers suggest Dominic Anderson has no intention of slowing down their operations."

The final shot showed Jason Anderson standing at a press podium, flanked by Harley, Livewire, Red Hood, and Katana—faces that once struck fear now inspiring... something else entirely.

Admiration. Fear. Loyalty. Hate.

Then—

CLICK.

The TV shut off.

In the silence that followed, only one figure stood up.

Superman.

His arms crossed, eyes firm as steel. Behind him, the Justice League remained seated: Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and the Flash.

He turned to them, voice calm—but heavy.

"We cannot let them get away with this. As the Justice League, we must use our influence to pressure the government into disbanding this group. What they've done isn't heroism—it's a declaration of war. If this continues, people will start picking up weapons, believing they have the right to kill in the name of justice. That cannot be allowed to happen."

Hal leaned forward, disbelief painted across his face.

"How did this even get passed? The government sanctioned this? Since when did we let street executions become federal policy?"

Diana's eyes narrowed, thoughtful as always.

"It's the Andersons. Their reach is long... isn't that right, Bruce?"

Bruce didn't respond at first. Still seated, still quiet—his eyes stared into the middle of the table, calculating, brooding.

"Yes. Most likely."

Barry blinked in confusion.

"You're telling me a single family was able to sway the government like this?"

"Not because of their money. Or their power," Bruce finally said, voice low and grim. "But because of how smart they are."

He pressed a button on the control panel in front of him. The holo-display above them flickered to life, showing footage from a congressional session: the vote that birthed the Cursed Ones.

"This is from the day it all passed. That man—" the image zoomed in on an elderly, white-haired senator "—is Henry Darren White, President of the Senate. He and a small group pushed the proposal through. The idea? Use Gotham as a test city. One year. At the end of it, Congress will vote again on whether the Cursed Ones should operate nationally."

The vote numbers appeared in bold red and green.

72 in favor. 24 against. 4 abstained.

Bruce continued.

"This vote came suddenly. Abrupt. Barely any time for analysis or discussion. And the reason is simple: blackmail."

Clark slammed his fist on the table.

"Blackmail?!"

Even Diana's expression turned to one of shock. The room fell silent.

"I've gathered my own evidence," Bruce said. "And I suspect Dominic Anderson did the same. That's how he cornered them. Hidden recordings, digital traces, files filled with... the darkest corners of these men's lives. Sexual crimes, corruption, illicit deals. Evidence strong enough to ruin them all. So when he came to them with the offer to hand Gotham over—under full legal pretense—they saw it as the lesser evil."

"Then we expose it," Diana said firmly. "We bring the truth to the world and prove the Cursed Ones have no legitimacy."

Clark nodded.

"Exactly. We make it public. We show the world what this family really is."

But Bruce didn't share their resolve. Instead, he shook his head slowly.

"Doing that would be a mistake. A fatal one. If those files are leaked—by us or the Andersons—we risk far more than a scandal. We risk riots. Collapse. Civil war. Dominic hasn't used the evidence publicly because it's his shield—and his weapon. Not just against Congress... but against us too."

Barry frowned.

"What are you saying? That we should just... accept this? Let the government be manipulated by one family?"

"No," Bruce said flatly. "But don't think of them like a mafia family. Think of them like LuthorCorp—rich, powerful, clean on paper, and entirely untouchable. Anything we do now... leads to chaos. And besides—there's another reason I'm hesitant to act."

That sentence chilled the room.

Coming from Bruce, hesitation was rare. Fear? Unheard of.

Clark turned to him.

"You think Jason is that powerful?"

"It's not his strength that concerns me," Bruce replied. "Though yes, taking him and the Cursed Ones down would require all of us. It's not the fight I fear—it's what he knows."

They all leaned in.

Diana asked, "What does he know?"

Bruce exhaled slowly.

"A week ago, I confronted Jason. A real fight. And during it... he revealed something."

The room fell into complete silence.

"He spoke names—our names. Clark. Bruce. Barry. Diana. He knows who we are. He threatened to release that information publicly if anything happened to him."

It was like the floor dropped out beneath them.

Clark's eyes narrowed. Barry stiffened. Diana remained composed but visibly shaken.

"He knows our identities," Bruce said. "He knows our families, our homes... everything."

Even those like J'onn and Arthur—who had fewer ties—went quiet.

But for the others?

This wasn't just a threat.

It was war.

War from the shadows.

And right now...

Jason Anderson was winning.
