Chapter 13: Hidden Master
It was almost night, and under the cast of the moon and city lights, he felt an odd sense of freedom. Yet, despite it, he had a problem, he had nowhere to stay. He didn't have money to rent a room at any inn in the massive city.
'It's not safe to sleep on the streets since the guards patrol and would capture anyone seen as a blight on the city's reputation.'
Wondering what to do, he struggled to think of any options until he remembered some places mentioned in the novel.
'I hope it's nearby.'
Based on the novel, from the eastern entrance, a small cabin rested at the corner between two large establishments. It wasn't noticeable, but it was where the protagonist had stayed in his early years as a trainee. Moreover, it was the only place owned by Linn's future master in the city.
Gritting his teeth, he followed his best guess from memory. This was his only option for staying safe tonight, even if it meant risking an encounter with the hidden swordsman himself.
After a few minutes of navigating the streets, Vonn finally found the cabin. Unappealing and nestled between two busy establishments, each bustling with activity, it looked more like a small house made of wood than a cabin. But since it was inside the city and by the roadside, calling it a "cabin" wasn't really fitting.
Approaching the wooden door, he hesitated before knocking. But knowing how pressing his situation was, he had no choice but to borrow a bit of opportunity from the protagonist.
'Not that I want to take his chance, but what good is my knowledge if I don't use it for my own sake?'
Finally, Vonn knocked. Moments later, the door opened to reveal an older man, slightly hunched, wearing commoner's attire. Though his face showed a few wrinkles, his age seemed more a matter of his posture than his years.
"What is it?"
Vonn gave an awkward smile. "Hello, sir. Could I possibly stay here for the night?"
The old man's gaze dropped, examining the unassuming young boy at his door. At first, he looked puzzled but soon asked, "What's your purpose, kid? Do you think you can just ask that of a stranger?"
"I understand it's unusual, but I thought you might be kind enough to let me in, sir."
The old man's initial indifference shifted slightly as he looked the boy over with a scrutinizing gaze. After a few moments, he sighed and said, "Come in."
Vonn smiled and entered the modest home of the hidden swordsman.
Once inside, the old man headed toward the kitchen, reaching into a cabinet. "So, how do you know me?" he asked.
'He's already figured out that I'm a Silverfein descendant. Looks like one of those four special eyes really does live up to its name. It's not just a novel detail, after all,' Vonn thought.
Adjusting his approach to win the old man's final approval, Vonn replied, "It's not so hard to recognize the hidden master of the family."
The old man paused in the middle of preparing a glass of water for Vonn. 'He even knows that I'm a master? Just how much does this kid know? I thought he was here only because he's a relative.'
Clearing his throat, the swordsman handed Vonn the water and a small snack. "I hope this is enough. It's all I have," he said in a weary voice.
"Should I explain why I'm here?" Vonn asked. "With all due respect, I only came to stay for a night, not to be a burden. I know you retired long ago."
The old man looked him over, puzzled. "You… how old are you, kid? And how do you know so much?"
Vonn shrugged. "I'm only six years old, and why I know you… well, that's a secret."
The old man chuckled. "So, you're not here to bother me?"
Vonn shook his head. 'As if I'd need to do that. I don't want to take you from Linn. I need him to get stronger.'
"Why? Does that happen a lot?" Vonn asked.
The old man sat down across from him. "Not too often. But, every once in a while, kids from the family come around wanting me to teach them. Can't they see the state I'm in?"
Recalling an arc in the novel, Vonn couldn't help but chuckle, nearly choking on the bread he was about to eat. Outwardly, the old man seemed frail, but in truth, his mana was so deeply hidden that even his own body had almost forgotten it was there.
The hidden swordsman was not only a master of mana control but also a master of the sword—capable of taking down huge monsters, even without tapping into his mana.
"You know the family doesn't judge by appearances."
"Hmm… you're right," the old man admitted with a smile. "So, do you know my name?"
Vonn nodded. "Yurik Silverfein. You're from a branch family that was adopted into the main family about five decades ago."
Yurik smiled in amusement. 'This kid really knows me. Which branch does he come from? With that striking appearance, could he be from the main family? But I don't recall anyone with gray hair… Maybe he's descended from another family, too.'
"You're not curious about who I am?" Vonn prompted.
"So, kid, who are you?"
Vonn smiled. "I'm Vonn Silverfein, Uncle. The second young master."
