Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Becoming a True Ninja
Xuan Yi understands deeply that in the Ninja World, bloodline isn't the only thing that matters—master-disciple lineage plays a huge role, too. Currently, he knows civilian ninjas generally gain access to new ninjutsu either through a master's guidance or by earning them through meritorious service. He's unsure if villagers can submit original ninjutsu to exchange for others, so that remains an open question.
For a civilian ninja to secure a strong teacher, wouldn't he need to be recognized as a prodigy? Think of Minato Namikaze, who became Jiraiya's disciple, or Sakura Haruno—initially weak, she caught Tsunade's attention. Squad leaders might give occasional mentoring, but that's not the same as a true master-disciple bond. Indeed, whether a squad leader teaches ninjutsu depends entirely on their mood.
With that in mind, Xuan Yi understands Rasengan might be too advanced for his current standing—but he intends to master it anyway. If he can, it'll serve as a strong foundation for his ambitions.
"Regarding resources," he muses internally, "the Sannin rank at the top. Orochimaru is dangerous, but there are so many possibilities. Tsunade probably won't take disciples at her current age, but maybe I could approach her through Shizune? Jiraiya, I suspect, is off chasing beautiful women. My best bet, realistically, is Tsunade or Sakumo Hatake."
Choosing to study swordsmanship wasn't random—it tied directly to Hatake influence. As a student, he can approach Tsunade via Shizune, and Sakumo via Kakashi. Xuan Yi also considers mastering the Eight Gates. Other jonin in Konoha may be out of reach for now, making it critical that he establish himself as a genius—so that the village's high-ranking advisors or even the Third Hokage might take notice and invest in him.
If all else fails, he might be picked up by Danzo—but he doubts that will happen. His guard is too strong.
Two days of intense training later, Xuan Yi juggles both swordsmanship and Rasengan drills. Using a water-filled balloon as practice material, he begins honing his control over the spinning chakra sphere.
March 20, Konoha Year 41 — First Day at the Ninja Academy
Xuan Yi enters the Academy with his mother's homemade bento in his backpack, heading to First-Year, Class One. He notices several familiar faces already present: Kurenai Yuhi, Shizune, Rin Nohara, and a sunglasses-clad student chewing on a toothpick. Smiling, he figures they must've come early out of excitement.
Without hesitation, he takes a seat beside Shizune across the aisle. She glances at him, startled—but Xuan Yi greets her first: "Hello, I'm Xuan Yi. Please guide me in the future!" Shizune blushes before returning the introduction, shaking his hand softly. Warm and casual, he chatters away as more classmates filter in.
Soon, Might Guy strides in wearing his signature green jumpsuit. Moments later, Kakashi arrives, hands in pockets, his white hair unmistakable. Xuan Yi notices a striking similarity between Kakashi and Sasuke Uchiha—they both project that cool, aloof aura.
The classroom fills quickly, and the bell rings. A middle-aged man steps in: "My name is Ryuusei Nimoki. I'm your teacher from today onward."
Before he finishes introducing himself, the classroom door slams open. Obito Uchiha bursts in, panting: "So… sorry, I'm late." As always, he's consistently tardy.
Mr. Nimoki sighs with exasperation, but it's the first day, so he lets it slide. "Obito, next time, please be punctual."
Obito beams, scratching his head. "Yes, Sensei!"
The teacher then announces the template for self-introductions—name, favorite food, least favorite food, and ninja goal.
Obito confidently strides to the podium: "I'm Obito Uchiha, of the Uchiha Clan. I like bonito rice balls and dislike natto. My goal… is to become Hokage!" He flashes a thumbs-up. Xuan Yi, listening quietly, thinks: A civilian can never reach Hokage. The Uchiha don't stand a chance—the Second Hokage and Danzo are wary of them. Unless they stage a coup, they've no chance. But childhood dreams are cherished; Obito won't be mocked for it.
Following Obito's lead, other students introduce themselves one by one. Finally, it's Xuan Yi's turn.
He steps up, smiling: "I'm Xuan Yi. My favorite food is dango—and oddly enough, I hate dango too." Grins spread around. He continues: "My ninja goal is… to become an excellent ninja who can protect my loved ones and the Village!" Pausing, he notes: "As for becoming Hokage… many can become Hokage. It's not only me." He smiles but keeps his deeper intention to protect hidden. I'm just a kid now. When I'm strong enough, I can show them what I'm made of.
Analysis & Strategy
Xuan Yi's approach is pragmatic: he can't rely on lineage or fame, so he focuses on becoming indispensable by mastering powerful techniques like Rasengan and swordsmanship. He's thoughtfully navigating the maze of Konoha's hierarchy to identify viable paths—leveraging connections to Tsunade through Shizune, and to Sakumo Hatake via Kakashi.
He understands that true discipleship requires exceptional talent—and he's starting to build that reputation early. Showing up at the Academy, forming alliances, and showcasing raw potential is his first move toward drawing attention from the village's upper echelons. If ninja leaders see signs of genius, they might take him under their wing—or at least vouch for his potential.
Xuan Yi knows the internal politics of Konoha are turbulent: the Uchiha are distrusted, Danzo lurks in the shadows, and Hokage decisions are conservative. Amid this, he begins shaping a path based on merit, strategy, and resourcefulness.
