Chapter 156: The Drum Island

"So, that's Drum Island."

"It's cold!"

"It's a Winter Island, right? I wonder how the people in that place live."

Snapping his fingers, all of a sudden, a puff of smoke appeared, and everyone put on their jackets, which warmed their bodies.

"Jacket? How?!"

"But it's warm...."

They knew well how they could get this jacket, but let's talk about that later since they had to admit that this jacket was so warm...

"Drum Island..."

Masa looked at the distant island that had many drum-shaped mountains that jutted out from the ground and became the trademark of this island. Yet, compared to the drum-shaped mountains, he was more concerned about the weather on this island.

"It is a Winter Island, right?

"Yeah, for a year, it will be full of snow all the time."

Due to the unique magnetic field of the Grand Line, many islands are in a constant state of one particular season. There are still different seasons on each island, ranging from Summer Island summer to Winter Island winter, with the weather in each season dependent on the type of island.

The Drum Island was included within the Winter Island, so no matter whether it was a spring, a summer, an autumn, or even a winter, all of them would be in the winter.

Masa felt that the uniqueness of the weather was definitely related to the lost history of the area and strengthened his guess of what a One Piece was.

'Should I get the memory of a Nico Robin?'

If it was before, Masa might not have had an interest in history, but as he saw the mighty ancient weapon, the strangeness of geography, and many other things in the world, he knew that they were all useful for him and all of Masa.

Masa might not love trouble, but somehow, as he knew that trouble came to him, he knew that he had to make the first move before they made a move on him.

As for the D family or those saviors or whatever over there, he didn't care.

More importantly, if 20 kings of the Celestial and the D family could make their own history, then why couldn't Masa do the same?

"But, how do the people on this island make money? Isn't it all full of snow?" Carina suddenly asked, but her eyes were staring at Masa.

"...you are asking me?"

"Yes."

"..."

Yet, somehow, when this question was thrown out, everyone was curious, and Masa must know the answer, they thought.

Many countries were part of the World Government, and the amount of tribute they had to pay was comparable to the population they had.

In other words, the more population it had, the more tribute it had to pay.

So, how did the Drum Kingdom, which came from a Winter Island, pay its tribute?

"There are many ways, you know? Fishing, fur industries, wood, tourism, and some minerals."

"Minerals?"

"Strangely enough, those lands that don't have a good harvest or are limited by harsh weather usually have a lot of minerals in them."

"You mean... like a gold or an iron?"

"Yes."

"So, this island will be full of gold and iron?"

Carina's eyes had already turned into a belly symbol when she heard Masa's words, thinking this was a great place to visit!

"There is a high chance, but I can't say for sure since there hasn't been much of a discovery, but then again, the reason why it is famous is because of the doctors. In other words, the medical knowledge of doctors on this island is high."

"Ah, so it is due to medical knowledge..."

If it was minerals, such as gold and other precious metals, then Carina knew there should be a way for them to steal it, but knowledge? While it was important, this wasn't a realm of her expertise, and they were facing people instead of non-living beings, so she knew it was useless in her hands.

"But I have heard that the new king of this kingdom had banished or killed most of the doctors in his kingdom," Kalifa suddenly said.

"Ah, how could you tell?" Perona asked curiously.

"...I was an agent before, did you forget?"

"Oh." 3x

As expected of an agent, they thought.

"Still, this new king is quite smart," Masa said.

"Ha?" 4x

Hearing those words, the four stared at Masa in confusion.

The treasures of the Drum Kingdom were their doctors, yet Masa told them that the new king of the Drum Kingdom was smart after banishing or killing most of the doctors, leaving only the best.

"...are you serious, Masa?"

Watching their confusion, Masa said, "You know the Heavenly Tribute, right?"

"Of course."

Everyone knew the Heavenly Tribute was a heavy tax that a kingdom had to pay to the World Government so they could be a member of the country.

"How large the Heavenly Tribute is based on how much the number of the population is. The larger the population, the higher a kingdom or a country has to pay for this tribute. So, this new king knows that his kingdom can't have a lot of doctors who can save his civilians, or else, the tax that he will pay will be tremendous."

After all, if there were more doctors, more people would be saved, and the population would increase; by then, how could the new king even pay the tribute?

"....."

Somehow, all of them couldn't help but be shocked since no one expected the new king, Wapol, to have such a sharp mind. If he killed the population, then it would lead to terrible consequences, but if it was only the doctors, then no one would say much. More importantly, with the extreme temperature of the island, even if the king did nothing, without doctors, the population would die of a natural death, so the king wouldn't be blamed, and he could enjoy the money that came from the tax, without paying much of the Heavenly Tribute.

"...isn't this king too evil?"

The image of Wapol in their minds quickly became a mysterious evil king that would extort his people till they were thin like a husk.

"Well, it might be because this guy is just greedy."

When Masa thought of the image of a Wapol, he knew well that this guy was greedy, but even if Wapol was greedy, it didn't mean Wapol was stupid. Instead, this guy was relatively witty, especially when Wapol could return to become a king after he lost everything and became a vagabond.

Yet, since Masa had appeared, Wapol might not have had a chance to do that, especially since he was interested in Wapol's Devil Fruit, Baku Baku no Mi.

However, somehow, his thoughts were interrupted when he heard a loud voice from a distance.

"Hey, stop! Don't come over! This place is dangerous!"

"Huh?"

Everyone was confused as they saw many people standing at the shore, screaming at all of them to leave.

"The king has targeted you! Please leave!"

"He will eat you!"

"Don't land on this island!"

"..."

Masa, Carina, Perona, Kalifa, and Brook could only say that those people were kind of cute somehow.

The only problem was that all of a sudden, something emerged from the ocean and caught everyone off guard as a gigantic ship with a lot of soldiers with flintlocks stood with their guards and showed their aggressive aura while being led by a large man with a cylinder-shaped jaw made up of tin plates.

"Mahahahaha! What a beautiful ship! Now, I proclaim that ship is mine! Get the hell out of my property, bastard!"

"....."

Perona blinked her cute eyes and asked, "Masa, who is that guy...?" While she had an idea, she couldn't help but ask.

"The king of the Drum Kingdom, Wapol."

"....."

The image of the evil, crafty king who extorted his population in ingenious methods was shattered at that moment.
