Shadow Ascendance

Chapter 4: The Price of Power (Continued)

Kriel awoke from his restless slumber on the old wooden crate, the shadows still swirling around him like a living cloak. The remnants of his previous battles lingered in his mind, but now a new urgency pulsed through him a quest from the Void System that demanded his attention.

He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and rose to his feet, feeling the power coursing through him. The thrill of victory from absorbing the marks of weaker Veilborn had only whetted his appetite for greater challenges. Kriel could sense that the B-Rank Veilborn were nearby, their energy vibrant and pulsating with potential.

"Time to hunt," he muttered to himself, a wicked grin spreading across his face. The thought of tormenting stronger opponents filled him with exhilaration. He had tasted power, and he craved more.

As he stepped out of the abandoned building into the early morning light, Kriel felt invigorated. The streets of Ethren Village were quiet, the villagers still wary after the chaos he had unleashed. They peered from behind closed doors and shuttered windows, fear etched on their faces as they sensed something dark had taken root in their midst.

"Let them cower," Kriel sneered. "They will soon learn who truly rules these shadows."

He moved swiftly through the village, his senses heightened, searching for any signs of the B-Rank Veilborn he needed to hunt. The thrill of the chase surged within him, a primal instinct driving him forward. He could feel their energy resonating in the air a tantalizing promise of power waiting to be claimed.

As he approached the outskirts of town, he spotted a group of three Veilborn gathered near a small clearing. They looked older than him around sixteen years old and were preparing to leave for Astral Academy, their marks glowing brightly against the backdrop of trees a vibrant display of fire, lightning, and wind. Kriel's heart raced; these were no ordinary opponents.

"Perfect," he whispered to himself, excitement bubbling beneath his calm exterior.

He slipped into the shadows, moving silently as he observed them from a distance. They were laughing and joking among themselves, blissfully unaware of their impending doom. Kriel could feel their confidence radiating outward, but it only fueled his desire to crush it.

"Did you hear about that Markless kid?" one of them said with a chuckle. "I heard he's been lurking around like a rat."

"Yeah," another replied dismissively. "He's nothing. Just a weakling who doesn't know his place."

Kriel clenched his fists at their words but kept himself hidden. "Let's see how long that laughter lasts," he thought darkly.

With a flick of his wrist, Kriel activated Shadow Flesh and stepped into their midst like a ghost emerging from darkness. The sudden appearance startled them; their laughter died in an instant as they turned to face him.

"Who are you?" one demanded, stepping forward with bravado despite Kriel's intimidating presence.

Kriel smiled coldly. "Your worst nightmare."

Before they could react, he unleashed a wave of void energy that surged from him like a tidal wave. The ground trembled as darkness enveloped them, distorting reality around them.

"Get back!" shouted one as they raised their hands to defend against the onslaught.

But Kriel was faster. He darted forward with newfound agility, targeting the weakest member first a young girl whose confidence faltered under pressure.

"Let's see how you handle true darkness!" Kriel hissed as he activated Void Grip once more.

The girl gasped as shadows wrapped around her like chains, draining her energy and corrupting her mark before she could even react. Kriel felt a surge of power as he absorbed her mark into himself.

The remaining two Veilborn shouted in alarm as they witnessed their friend fall before Kriel's might. "We need to regroup!" one yelled frantically.

"Don't panic!" shouted another boy with fiery red hair, trying to rally them. "We can take him together!"

But Kriel was relentless; he could feel their fear feeding him even more power. "Regroup? Why would you do that when you can join her?" He laughed maniacally as he charged toward another target the burly boy wielding a sword infused with lightning magic.

"Stay back!" The burly boy swung his sword down at Kriel with all his might, but Kriel ducked beneath it effortlessly using Shadow Flesh again to evade harm.

"You think you can stop me?" Kriel taunted as he moved behind him swiftly and unleashed Void Grip once more.

"No! Not again!" The boy cried out in horror as darkness enveloped him and drained away his strength.

Kriel reveled in the sensation of power flooding through him again; it was euphoric addictive even as he absorbed yet another mark into himself.

With two Veilborn down and only one left standing the girl who had initially spoken Kriel turned to face her directly. She stood firm despite her comrades' fall; her eyes burned with determination mixed with fear.

"You may have taken my friends," she said fiercely, "but I won't let you escape!"

Kriel smirked at her defiance; it was almost admirable. "You think you can defeat me? You're just another stepping stone on my path to greatness."

"What do you want from us?" she shouted back defiantly. "You think this will make you strong? You're just a coward hiding in shadows!"

He stepped closer, shadows swirling around him like smoke. "But first… let's have some fun."

He unleashed a wave of darkness that engulfed her surroundings, distorting reality itself. The girl staggered back, struggling against the oppressive force pressing down on her willpower.

"Feel it," Kriel taunted, watching her fight against despair. "Feel your strength slipping away."

"No! I won't give in!" she cried out desperately as she tried to summon her remaining energy but found it slipping through her fingers like sand.

As she struggled against the void energy wrapping around her like chains, Kriel reveled in her torment. "You're strong," he admitted mockingly between gasps for breath from her futile attempts at resistance. "But strength alone won't save you."

"Maybe not," Kriel replied breathlessly as they exchanged blows back and forth across the clearing littered with debris from earlier chaos caused by their battle. "But it will help me survive."

In one final desperate move, she summoned all her remaining energy into a brilliant flash of black lightning aimed directly at Kriel's heart but just before it struck home…

He activated Pain Conversion again the pain absorbed converting into void energy that surged through him like wildfire!

"Too slow!" Kriel shouted triumphantly as he sidestepped her attack effortlessly before countering with Void Grip one last time darkness consuming her mark entirely!

As she fell to her knees in defeat her powers stripped away Kriel stood over her triumphantly; shadows swirling around him like smoke rising from ashes left behind after destruction swept through Ethren Village once more.

He looked down at her with cold satisfaction etched across his features the thrill of victory pulsing through every fiber within him now stronger than ever before!

"This is what happens when you underestimate someone," he said softly but firmly before turning away from her fallen form ready to continue on this path paved by bloodshed toward ultimate power!

As dawn fully broke over Ethren Village the sun casting warm golden rays across its streets the villagers emerged cautiously from hiding places only to find devastation left behind by Kriel's rampage; fear etched upon every face they encountered now knowing what lurked within shadows nearby…

And somewhere deep inside himself a new hunger stirred within Kriel's heart a desire not just for survival but domination over all who dared oppose him!

As whispers spread throughout town about what transpired here today it wouldn't be long before word reached others beyond these walls… others who would seek justice for fallen comrades lost during this dark chapter unfolding within Ethren Village…

But Kriel didn't care; let them come! Each challenge would only serve to make him stronger fueling this insatiable hunger driving him onward toward greatness!

He smirked at thought the Veil Patrol wouldn't know what hit them when they finally caught up…

The hunt continued…
