Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Threat
Two days gone, I have 88 days left. This is poor progress considering what's at stake but when I think of how difficult Sebastian is, I'd say I made meaningful improvements. At least I got a position that would keep me close to him.
That's a start.
Aside from my ultimate goal of making Sebastian fall in love with me, I promised myself to get more fresh air and maybe even make friends but I was currently doing neither. As a matter of fact, I was nestled into my quilt and feigning an illness.
That's right, after the event Beatrice and Carla charged straight to my room like a bunch of jobless idiots. My only luck to avoid the backlash was to forge an illness. Thankfully, none of them saw me at the event so it wasn't hard to pull off, not that it mattered to them. I could be dying and they would request a painting.
The only reason they let me be is because my paintings always come out deformed anytime I paint when sick. I just couldn't control it and they understood that, otherwise I would've gotten the best version of beating last night.
Should I call them the mother-daughter duo? It must be nice, Carla was the daughter she never had and Beatrice was the mother figure she lost. How perfect.
Suddenly my door was opened and my reverie was cut short. Can't they even change a little and learn to knock?
"Madam asked for your corporate in selecting the maids"
Without waiting for a response from me the servant walked in with the document and placed it on my shelf.
"I was told to bring back the document after you make your selections"
Nothing about the way she spoke or treated me was right and I simply could no longer stand such arrogance.
Then again, I didn't want to get involved with the maids and alter some things from the future. Still, a little bit of trouble shouldn't hurt, right?
"Just leave it there and wait outside"
My voice sounded muffled because my face was buried under the blanket and my eyes were barely visible.
"I'll relay your words that you don't want to select your maids which is disobedience to Sir, Regulus' instruction"
I couldn't stop a dry laugh from escaping my lips. She was now resulting in threats? Well, I wasn't going to take it this far initially but she stepped on my toes. I won't take it lightly.
"While you're telling on me, do remember to reveal your secret affair with the gardener's son. I'm sure Sir Regulus would love to hear about your fierce romance that goes on in the storage room, back exit, fireplace, balcony… should I go on?"
I raised my head from the quilt to speak so I could clearly see her priceless reaction. Her eyes widened beyond recognition and she broke out in cold sweat. Distress was written all over her face and that just confirmed my words.
You see, I wasn't sure it was her. All the maids wear the same uniform so it really wasn't easy to guess who it was but her silver bracelet gave her away, but then, anyone could own a silver bracelet so I couldn't be too sure until her expression confirmed my suspicions.
Immediately she went down on her knees. "I'm sorry, I was wrong. It was my fault. I'll do anything you ask. I'll wait outside if you want" So she does know how to beg. Interesting.
I wasn't in the mood for this so I gestured for her to leave.
"There's no need to beg. Stand outside was my instruction, I'll send for you once I'm done"
She nodded frantically and ran outside to wait while my mood plummeted. To have loyal servants I have to blackmail them first? Such relationships don't last and betrayal is inevitable. I don't want it.
Forever and a half later I decided to select the maids and release her from the punishment of waiting outside.
I could make my pick with my eyes closed it really changes nothing! Once they are appointed they'd join in on the hostility towards me. After all, they are not dumb enough not to know whose side to be on. I can't blame them, I wouldn't pick me either.
The rest of the day was a breeze and the same goes for the day after and it was finally time! 85 days to go and it could either be the end of me or end in a favorable way.
I'm determined to get the latter outcome and it all begins with my first day of work as a maid!
