Chapter 10: When the Song Fades.
The atmosphere inside the building fell silent.
All eyes were gathered on the two troublemakers, who vented their frustration onto the newcomer boy, who drew more attention due to his appearance.
Everyone knew the drunkards. They were both notorious for their bad behaviour, and people wondered why their adventurer certification was still intact.
Although the other adventurers felt a little annoyed by the drunkards' stupidity, not a single one voiced their thoughts or stepped forward to stop them.
Why was that?
Because Adventurers believed that if one couldn't handle fools like them, then the white-haired boy didn't deserve to call himself an Adventurer.
It was harsh for newcomers, but it was necessary to enter an uncertain world of an adventurer.
Yuto's brow twitched as the foul stench of alcohol mixed with the sweat stung his nose.
"Oi, oi, are you hearing me, you damn brat?"
One of the men approached; His face was flat, and he had a medium build. He wore shabby clothes with leather armour and a worn longsword at his waist.
"What're you looking at, huh? Want me to beat you up, brat?"
The other was a slightly fat man, whose hair was failing him. He wore ragged clothes with a dagger strapped at his thigh, leaning forward with a frown on his face.
Yuto didn't budge. His silence ignited the flames in the hearts of the two drunk men. Blood rushed to their heads, and veins throbbed on their foreheads.
They reached to grab Yuto's collar, but they only caught an afterimage as a shadow loomed behind them.
The boy's hand touched the back of their head before.
Bam!
A dull thud echoed through the still room as the two men's heads slammed to the cracked floor, knocked out by Yuto's raw strength.
"Hmph, weaklings."
He grabbed their ankles and dragged them out of the guild hall.
At the entrance, Yuto threw their bodies outside, startling Gonzo and the horses who were standing nearby.
Gonzo's eyes widened, and he turned to Yuto.
"What happened?"
"Minor problem. Don't mind them."
After reassuring the old man, Yuto turned back inside and walked to the receptionist with a heavy expression.
The same woman greeted him with a professional smile, handing him a slip of paper.
"Please fill in your personal data and what talent you possess."
Internally, he breathed a slight sigh of relief because the registration didn't require him to show his talent in front of everyone using a chunk of crystal.
Taking the form in front of him, Yuto only filled in his name and his talent as a Swordsman.
"Is this enough?"
Yuto handed the form back and watched the receptionist check the information she received while glancing at Yuto.
"Is something wrong?"
"No. Please wait a moment while we prepare your card."
As someone who worked in the industry for years, the woman knew well how to brush off the question from the adventurer.
Yuto caught the subtle change in her expression and tone, giving him a slight chuckle of admiration.
However, as beautiful as she was, he despised trying to keep his image and chose to stand proud with his personality.
He shifted to the right and spotted a large board pinned with various parchments.
Behind him, a wide hall was transformed into a small restaurant, with tables and chairs arranged neatly.
A place for adventurers to unwind.
On the far left, Yuto saw a counter where the master served food and drinks. He caught the delicious aroma of roasted meat wafting in the air, causing his stomach to rumble in protest.
There were also staircases on either side, leading up to the second floor, which was relatively quieter.
He was curious, but refrained from wandering around and waited for his card to be made.
"Thank you for waiting. The registration fee is one silver coin."
A soft, elegant voice broke Yuto in a daze as he turned at the source, and saw the receptionist offering a silver tray with a small card on it.
He reached into the small pouch in his pocket and took out one silver coin, exchanging it for the card on the tray.
"Congratulations to Adventurer Yuto, from this moment on, you are officially part of us."
Looking down at the card in his hand, there was a large F printed on the side, indicating Yuto's current rank.
From Elias's memories, Yuto recalled that the Adventurer ranks were divided into several stages, from F as the starting point, followed by E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, and SSS.
Ranks F-D were the limit where an adventurer was considered a beginner. Then, from C-A, they would be regarded as experienced.
And from S-SSS, they were considered legends, heroes in their own right.
In the Edelvaris Kingdom, there were three S-Rank Adventurers recognized by the state. One of them was almost reaching the SS realm.
As for Rank-SSS, no one in the current era could match that level except the legendary Hero in ancient times, who successfully eradicated evil from this land.
"Would you like to hear the Adventure Guild's rules, or purchase a manual we have provided?"
"How much?"
Without thinking, Yuto cut the receptionist's words off, which caused her pretty expression to twitch slightly.
She thought he didn't notice, but he did.
"One Silver."
Tak!
With a sharp clink, Yuto placed another coin on the counter, freezing the ambient chatter around them.
"My book please!"
His commanding tone raised the tension in the room.
"H-Here."
The mask on the woman's face finally cracked. A vein popped out of her temple, throbbing excessively while she handed him the thin book.
"Thanks."
Yuto ignored her scowl and snatched the book in her hand before turning towards the entrance, drawing silent stares from other adventurers.
Time was of the essence.
Outside, where evening wind blew a cold breeze that seeped into his skin, he saw Gonzo chatting with his daughter, who was sitting in the driver's seat.
"Gonzo, let's go."
"Oh! Savior, are you done registering?"
Without answering, Yuto showed his card, and the old man's face beamed.
"That's wonderful! Let's stop by the inn before we continue our journey tomorrow."
Yuto nodded and climbed into his usual seat.
"Daddy, I want to sit here too."
Shery raised her hand with sparkling eyes.
"Of course, sweetheart."
"Yay!"
She stood up and waited patiently for her father to sit in the middle, then snuggled onto his lap.
"Daddy, sing something."
"Anything for you, sweetheart, Hmm~ hmmm~."
Yuto's lips relaxed, and his body swayed gently, following the tune.
Shery, on the other hand, tried to hum along from time to time, her cheerful voice colouring their journey with vibrant life.
'It's nice to see a family like them.'
The boy thought as he shifted his attention far away toward the horizon.
A mellow song, paired with the crimson sky, brings him back to his childhood days, when Yuto still felt the warmth of a family.
In the park near his house, his mother would always accompany him to play and by the swing, gently, while humming an anime song.
While waiting for dusk to come, he would help his mother buy ingredients for dinner and eagerly wait to welcome his father's arrival from work.
He leaned, and unknowingly, his sight blurred due to accumulating tears.
'Haha… I can't believe this.'
Yuto closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm his pounding heart.
The hole in his heart cracked open, gushing out grief that had long been sealed deep.
He channelled his Qi energy throughout his body, suppressing the emotional storm rising within.
'I should be more careful from now on...'
Despite his effort, the boy didn't notice a pair of eyes from the father and daughter duo who saw a drop of tears stream down Yuto's cheek, falling onto his lap.
They didn't know what he had been through and chose not to ask, fearing it might break the boy's fragile composure.
So, the two remained silent and hoped for a day when Yuto would reveal his deepest feelings.
Perhaps, at that moment, their relationship would be much closer, more than just a business relationship.
That night, the three spent the night in a rather magnificent inn, thanks to Gonzo's connections.
And for the first time, Yuto fell asleep on a soft, warm bed that enveloped him in a comforting emptiness.
