Episode 27
Chapter 27
『Grrraaooonnn!!』
The giant wolf, seemingly displeased by the narrow space, seemingly displeased by the narrow space, knocked down bookshelves with its legs.
It rampaged without care, even though valuable literature lay scattered on the floor or torn apart mercilessly.
Anticipating the storm of violence, I search for an opening.
“(Now!)”
Seizing the moment when the giant wolf looked back, I kicked the ground with the intent to shatter it.
With magically enhanced leg strength, I closed the distance between us in an instant
Just as I was about to slip through the gap between its hind legs, a tail that had been motionless until now suddenly appeared right beside me.
“…Uwoooo!”
An invisible barrier clashed for a moment before shattering.
In the brief respite, I further enhanced my legs with magic and leaped forward.
Just behind my back, the tail whizzes by with a gust.
“Alright!”
After suppressing the excessive momentum from rolling on the floor, I stood up and started running again.
“(There’s no way to attack its belly. The only way is to break through that white whirlwind!)”
Something caught my peripheral vision.
“Ah, damn it! If it can summon a wolf, then it can undoubtedly summon that too!”
A sword made of ice took form in mid-air, aiming at me.
The three weapon skills within Finbul were based on the elements of Winter’s Wind, Winter’s Sword, and Winter’s Wolf
Until now, it had activated the two: Winter’s Wind, creating a vortex of cold air, and Winter’s Wolf, conjuring the ice giant wolf.
The third skill, Winter’s Sword, which could create and manipulate ice swords, was undoubtedly also summonable.
Fortunately, none of these skills were performing at their full potential due to being triggered by Alshade’s martial proficiency and willpower.
Still, they posed a threat to me.
I focused on my necklace, channeling magic and reinforcing the “Guardian” once again.
Ice swords relentlessly struck the renewed invisible barrier.
“Gaaah!” As I forcefully mend the cracks in the barrier using mana channeled into the necklace, I desperately move my feet forward.
“(Almost… there…!)” My vision turned pure white, but I knew Alshade’s direction through our faint connection.
The chill from the cracks near the sword-pierced barrier didn’t bother me.
“I can… see it!” Breaking through the layer of white cold, I caught a glimpse of Alshaid lying on the floor. Just as I relaxed for a moment to take advantage of the opportunity, a tremendous impact hit me from the left, and I was sent flying through the air.
In the brief glimpse before my confused eyes, I saw the giant wolf in a posture of swinging its left front leg.
Struggling to reestablish the “Guardian” that barely managed to reactivate in time, I narrowly avoided the worst outcome.
However, I had been pushed away significantly, crashing into several bookshelves and my distance from the wolf increased considerably.
“…Kuh!” My head shook from the impact, and my footing wavered, but I swiftly leaped to the right and moved into the shadow of the bookshelves.
A few moments later, several ice blades emerged from the bookshelves, piercing through them.
“(How do I get closer?)”
“Tch!”
Feeling a bad premonition, I moved further to the right.
A few seconds later, several ice blades emerged from the bookshelves, passing through where I had been earlier.
“How are they… Hn?”
I look at the place where I was trampled by ice swords and notice that they were all aimed at magical lighting devices.
“I see, it’s detecting mana!” Finbul, without eyes, likely has two ways to perceive its surroundings.
One is through the instructions of its master, Alshade, but since she’s currently unconscious, that method was not feasible.
The second method for Finbul, the top-tier magic sword familiar with magic, is to sense its surroundings through magical perception.
In fact, in the Wildia Chronicles, characters skilled in manipulating mana were also adept at sensing it, allowing them to perceive situations even in invisible places.
As the supreme magic sword highly familiar with mana, there was no way Finbul couldn’t do the same.
“(Let’s try it out.)”
I created “Illumination” on the top of a shelf and moved away from the spot.
Just like before, the ice swords ravaged the area, and the light sphere of “Illumination” was pierced and vanished by one of the swords.
“Is there a way to deal with this?” The number of swords aimed at me was greater, possibly because of the larger amount of mana I possessed.
However, the fact that the light orbs were also targeted meant that magic attacks were prioritized to some extent.
I targeted the books stored in the hidden shelf and set up several “Illuminations.”
As soon as I heard the sound of the air being sliced, I dashed out from the shadows of the shelf and moved to the next one in the row.
Although several swords impaled into the barrier, the operation could be considered successful.
“Next!” The closer I got to the giant wolf, the more swords were aimed at me.
After that, I had to recast “Guardian” six more times, but I managed to approach the giant wolf to within four rows.
“(I don’t have time, but what should I do…)”
However, the problem arose from this point onward.
I had a plan to deal with the incoming ice swords.
It involved using all the mana except what was used for body strengthening and channeling it into Tonitos for a sudden assault.
With that level of intensity, there should be no problem destroying the ice swords with Tonitos’ lightning.
Additionally, if I poured all the mana into Tonitos, it would end up with the most significant amount of mana present on the spot.
All of Finbul’ s attacks were precise.
It was unlikely that they would accidentally hit me, who was hiding behind Tonitos.
The problem lay in what came next, after getting close to the giant wolf.
I didn’t know whether it would attack with its front legs or try to bite with its head, but either way, if it aimed at Tonitos, it would hinder my path.
“…All that’s left is a big gamble.”
If there were no viable options left, I could only rely on uncertain methods and gamble.
“Well, stripping Finbul away from Al was practically a gamble too, so it’s not much different.”
I decided to use Tonitos’ first weapon skill.
Weapon skills were something the weapon recognized as something the wielder could use correctly after teaching them the chant and their name.
In other words, as long as I knew the chant and name, I might be able to use it, even if it went into an unstable state of rampage.
“(Goddess of luck, I beg of you.)”
While in my past life, I might have cursed and spat on gacha and drop rates in games, I was now confident that I could become a devout believer.
“Phew… haaaahhhh!”
After finishing my prayers, I prepared Tonitos and started my charge towards the giant wolf.
Tonitos, filled with all the mana I had, emitted a yellow glow from its geometric patterns at the tip and unleashed a devastatingly powerful lightning, far beyond what I experienced in the Golem battle.
The ice swords from Finbul, as I intended, aimed for Tonitos and were shattered by the lightning.
『Aoooong!』
“(Here it comes!)” As the giant wolf moved, I started chanting.
“Bark and Pierce—《■■ Tonitos》! Aaaahhhh!”
The moment I called Tonitos’ name, the power of the lightning from its tip increased, transforming into something that could now be called a lightning strike.
However, as expected, I couldn’t control it.
The aftermath of the lightning strike easily broke through “Guardian,” and burned my skin, even though I had resistance to lightning.
Enduring the pain that spread throughout my body, I used all my strength to throw Tonitos towards the giant wolf, who was raising its front leg to attack.
The rampaging lightning-wrapped Tonitos transformed into a single bolt of lightning, striking the giant wolf.
『“Aoo?!?”』
The lightning easily shattered the giant wolf’s raised front leg and turned it into a block of ice.
The lightning’s momentum carried on, completely destroying the wolf’s body from its neck to the rear, causing its head to fall to the ground with a thunderous sound.
“Haah, haaahh… Al, Shade…”
I forced my trembling legs to move, passing by the remains of the giant wolf and heading towards the vortex of cold.
Even though the giant wolf had fallen, I used “Guardian” with what little mana I had left to defend against the incoming ice swords.
There was no magic to counter the cold air within the barrier.
My breaths turned white and foggy, and my hands and feet grew numb.
The pain from my wounds somehow kept my fading consciousness tethered.
As my vision began to blur, I somehow managed to reach Alshade’s side and sat down, almost collapsing.
Using the last of my strength, I removed Finbul from Alshade’s hand and threw it away.
“…Quest… cleared.”
“…Ugh… Rio…?
Alshade opened her eyes, and I wanted to smile to put her at ease, but I wasn’t sure if I could manage that due to the pain.
“Al… Are… you… alright?”
