Chapter 10: CHAPTER 9: MUFFINS
Lily kept herself busy juggling school, commission painting, and her burgeoning modeling career. Each day was packed, but she loved the balance of creativity and ambition it brought her life.
She had been cast for a photoshoot with a famous makeup brand, a new milestone in her modeling journey.
The studio was bustling with activity—stylists, makeup artists, and crew members hurried to set up the perfect scene. Lily stood near the mirror as a makeup artist added finishing touches to her look. The photographer, a tall man in his mid-thirties named Jasper, approached her with a warm smile.
"All right, Lily," Jasper said, holding his camera. "Are you ready to shine?"
Lily smiled back, nodding. "I'm ready. What's the concept for today?"
"We're going for effortless elegance. Think confident, approachable, but still a little playful," Jasper explained. "You've got the perfect look for it. Just be yourself."
As the shoot began, Jasper guided her through different poses.
"Turn your head slightly—yes, just like that. Beautiful!" Jasper clicked the camera. "Now, give me a soft smile. Perfect! You're a natural at this, Lily."
Lily relaxed into the shoot, her confidence growing with every click of the shutter.
"Let's try something a bit different," Jasper said, adjusting the lighting. "Look off to the side, like you're deep in thought. Perfect, hold that... and now turn your gaze back to the camera. Brilliant!"
The session ended with applause from the crew.
"You did amazing, Lily," Jasper said, shaking her hand. "I wouldn't be surprised if this campaign skyrockets your career."
"Thank you so much," Lily replied, beaming. "It was such a fun experience."
After the photoshoot, Lily and her mom, Lisa, loaded a carefully wrapped painting into the car. It was an order from a local client, one of the many commissions Lily had been working on.
"This one turned out great, Lily," her mom said as they drove to the client's house.
"Thanks, Mom," Lily replied, looking out the window. "I really hope they like it."
They dropped off the painting, and the client was delighted. Afterward, Lily spent her weekend hanging out with Leah and Anna. Noah, however, was busy with football practice and spending time with Emma.
One evening, Lily and her mom were in the kitchen, baking muffins. The warm aroma of chocolate and vanilla filled the air.
"These muffins are turning out great," Lisa said, pulling a tray out of the oven.
"Yeah," Lily agreed, tasting a small piece. "They're delicious."
Lisa smiled knowingly. "You should bring some to Louise. You know how much she loves these, and they're Noah's favorite too."
Lily hesitated. "I don't know, Mom. It might be awkward."
"Nonsense," Lisa said firmly. "Louise misses you. She was asking about you the other day. You should go visit her. It's been a while."
Lily sighed but smiled. "Fine. I'll bring her some."
Lily carried a plate of muffins and walked over to Noah's house. She rang the doorbell, and Louise opened the door, looking surprised and delighted.
"Lily! Oh, my goodness, it's so good to see you!" Louise exclaimed, pulling her into a hug.
"Hi, Mrs. Callahan," Lily said, smiling. "I brought you some muffins."
Louise's face lit up. "Oh, thank you, sweetheart. These are Noah's favorite! Come in, come in."
Lily hesitated. "I don't want to intrude—"
"Nonsense," Louise said, waving her in. "I've missed you. Stay for a bit, won't you?"
Lily smiled and stepped inside. They sat in the kitchen, chatting over tea.
"You've grown into such a lovely young woman," Louise said warmly. "Noah's been telling me about your art business. I'd love to order a painting."
"You don't have to," Lily said quickly. "I'd be happy to gift you one."
Louise shook her head. "No, I insist. I want to support your business."
As they talked, Louise brought up Noah's childhood.
"Do you remember when you two were kids, running around in the backyard?" Louise said, laughing. "I always thought you two would end up together."
Lily laughed awkwardly. "Noah has someone special now."
Louise frowned. "He never told me that."
Just then, the door opened, and Noah walked in.
Noah smiled when he saw Lily. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"Hi, Noah," Lily said. "I brought muffins for your mom."
Louise interrupted. "You should stay for dinner, Lily."
"I don't want to impose—"
"Noah, tell her she's staying," Louise said firmly.
"Stay, Lily," Noah said, grinning. "Mom won't take no for an answer."
Lily relented and joined the family for dinner. They talked about college plans.
"So, Lily, what are your plans for college?" Noah's dad asked.
"I'm aiming for Harvard to study business," Lily said confidently.
"That's impressive," Mr. Carter said. "What about you, Noah?"
Noah hesitated. "I'm planning to study in New York."
His dad frowned. "I thought you were aiming for the same thing as Lily."
Noah avoided his gaze.
Louise looked thoughtful, remembering Lily's earlier comment about Noah having a girlfriend. "Noah, do you have a girlfriend?"
Noah glanced at Lily accusingly. "Yes, I do."
"When are we meeting her?" his mom asked.
"Soon," Noah said.
After dinner, Noah walked Lily home.
"I'm sorry for telling your mom," Lily said.
"It's fine," Noah said, smiling. "I was planning to introduce Emma anyway. Thanks for helping me choose her gift. She loved it."
"She's lucky to have you," Lily said softly.
Noah's eyes softened. "I'm lucky to have her."
Lily smiled, though her heart ached. "Goodnight, Noah."
"Goodnight, Lily," he said, watching her until she disappeared inside.
