Chapter 40: Installing the TV, Selling a Pokémon Egg
There were many things to do, and Kenji planned to tackle them one by one.
He first went to the supermarket in town and bought a large quantity of storable ingredients, which he had Bewear carry. Next, Kenji tried to inquire about the Poké Ball Transporter, but unfortunately, there was no such machine in the entire town of Fallarbor. When he mentioned a machine that could transport Pokémon, the shopkeepers all looked astonished, saying things like, "How is that possible?" and "We don't have anything like that in our shop."
Kenji: "..."
So at this point in time, the Poké Ball Transporter really hasn't been invented yet, has it? In that case, that matter would have to be postponed.
With the purchased ingredients, Kenji and Bewear continued on to the department store, where they bought a wall-mountable television and a Berry Blender for making Pokéblocks. He had the blender now, but he would have to make the Pokéblocks himself. Different Pokéblocks had different effects, and every Pokémon had different tastes. Kenji had plenty of time to experiment on his own, but that would take a while. For convenience, he also bought a few recipes for Pokéblocks suited to the tastes of Grass-type and Fairy-type Pokémon. The recipes were a little pricey, but still within an acceptable range for Kenji.
Before he left, the shop owner told him, "If you develop any new recipes in the future, you can also bring them here to sell."
Kenji nodded and made a mental note of this.
With everything purchased, Kenji prepared to go home. After confirming the customer's address, the department store staff immediately arranged for someone to go and install the items. Kenji and Bewear hitched a ride back with them.
By the time they returned to the breeding center, it was already evening. Growlithe, Oddish, and the Clefairy had indeed been very obedient, staying in the room until he came home. Kenji unlocked and opened the door, and the group of Pokémon's faces lit up with joyful surprise.
Kenji said with a smile, "Alright, we're back. You can all come out and play now!"
Growlithe wagged its tail and excitedly ran in circles around Kenji. The Clefairy, as if a great weight had been lifted, happily ran out of the bedroom to play outside. Oddish also let out a sigh of relief and followed behind the Clefairy, hopping downstairs and back to its own orchard.
In the lobby, the staff from the department store was installing the television on the wall. He hammered and tapped, and in just a short while, the installation was complete. The power to the breeding center had been restored; the electricians from Fallarbor Town must have repaired it while he was out.
Kenji picked up the remote control and tested it. Soon, various television programs appeared on the screen. There were movies, news, and even a Pokémon parenting show. Seeing this, Kenji slowly let out a breath. With this, he could now use the television to keep up with what was happening in the outside world.
The worker who installed the TV was an uncle of about thirty years old. He looked around and said, "There used to be a breeding center here a few years ago, but unfortunately it closed down. I didn't expect it to reopen now!"
Kenji smiled and said, "My parents used to run it. They passed away three years ago. Now that I'm older, I want to inherit their hard work and continue running this breeding center."
The uncle clicked his tongue. "You look about the same age as my son!" After saying that, the uncle realized something and quickly changed the subject. The children of the poor mature early. This kid has had it rough!
"By the way, seeing as you've just opened, do you have any Pokémon eggs for sale? I want to buy one for my son. He's turning ten in a month!" Talking about his son, the uncle's whole face lit up, his tone filled with pride.
"Of course, we do." Kenji looked at the man, a father preparing a birthday gift for his son. "What kind of Pokémon does your son like?"
The uncle carefully recalled his son's usual preferences and then asked, "Do you have any Pokémon that are very strong and cool?"
Strong and cool? If it were the later regions, that would be easy. Incineroar and Buzzwole from Alola, Obstagoon, Grimmsnarl, and Urshifu from Galar, Koraidon from Paldea... But the Hoenn region didn't really have that many Pokémon fitting that description. Did Machamp count? The problem was, the breeding center didn't currently have any Machop eggs.
After a moment of thought, Kenji decided to take the man upstairs to the incubation room to have a look. "Please follow me, the breeding center's Pokémon eggs are all upstairs."
"Then I won't be a bother!" the uncle nodded.
The two went upstairs together and arrived at the incubation room. The Hoenn League had sent a total of twenty Pokémon eggs. After subtracting the ones sold these past few days and the Castform he planned to keep for himself, there were currently thirteen eggs left at the breeding center: Poochyena, Zigzagoon, Wurmple, Trapinch, Cacnea, Chingling, Wynaut, Lotad, Aron, Whismur, Surskit, Shroomish, and Wingull.
Kenji's gaze swept over the eggs, and the names of the Pokémon appeared in his mind one by one.
If we're talking about strong and cool... Kenji's gaze fell upon one of the eggs.
"How about this one?" he asked, picking up the egg.
[Aron Egg: A Pokémon egg that can hatch a Steel/Rock-type Pokémon, Aron.]
[Health: Healthy]
[Father: Aggron (Elite-level)]
[Mother: Aggron (Elite-level)]
"What Pokémon is this?" the uncle asked.
"Aron. The Pokémon in the egg is the Steel/Rock-type Pokémon, Aron. Its final evolution, Aggron, is a large, kaiju-type Pokémon. It's both strong and cool, a very reliable companion," Kenji explained.
Aggron... My son would probably like a Pokémon like that, right? The image of his son's joyful face after becoming a trainer appeared in the uncle's mind, and he immediately made a decision.
"I'll take this egg!"
"Alright, that will be 150,000 Pokédollars in total."
The uncle paid the money and left excitedly, cradling the egg.
Another egg sold. There were now twelve eggs left at the breeding center. The egg with the shortest time until hatching had only one day left. This meant that the egg would hatch tomorrow.
Kenji turned his gaze towards that egg, and instantly, the egg's information appeared in his mind.
[Chingling Egg: A Pokémon egg that can hatch a Psychic-type Pokémon, Chingling.]
