Chapter 31: Chapter 31: A Batch of Eggs
Chapter 31: A Batch of Eggs
Officer Jenny's efficiency was maxed out. The very next morning, Kenji's Breeding Center received the batch of Pokémon eggs provided by the Hoenn League.
Jenny Jun helped Kenji move the eggs into the incubation room on the second floor of the breeding center. This room was equipped with specialized incubators, devices that resembled birds' nests and simulated the nests of some avian Pokémon. During the renovation, Kenji had installed fifty of them, and today, half were put into use.
The Hoenn League had sent a total of 20 Pokémon eggs.
As the two of them placed the eggs in the incubators, Jenny Jun said, "Alright, for now, these are the only suitable Pokémon eggs the Hoenn League has. But they know your situation now. If they have enough Pokémon eggs in the future, they will send more."
"Thank you for your trouble, Sis Jun," Kenji said. After a night of thinking, he felt that always calling her "Officer Jenny" was too distant, but "sister"... they weren't exactly siblings. After much deliberation, he felt this form of address was more suitable.
Jenny Jun was slightly taken aback, and then a smile bloomed on her face. "If you need anything later, you can come find me anytime." It was clear she was in a very good mood today.
Kenji smiled and then extended an invitation. "My place has just opened, and I don't really have anything to thank you for your help these past few days. If you don't mind, why don't you stay for lunch!"
Jenny Jun was very surprised. "You can cook?"
"I just learned," Kenji said without a change in expression.
The smile on Jenny Jun's face grew even brighter. "In that case, I'll be looking forward to it." By saying this, she had accepted Kenji's invitation.
Yesterday afternoon, Kenji had Bewear take him to Fallarbor Town to buy some fresh ingredients, which would now come in handy.
At noon, Kenji stir-fried a few simple dishes and sat down at the dining table with Bewear, Growlithe, and Jenny Jun to eat together.
Looking at the dishes on the table, Jenny Jun was very surprised. "It seems you're not only talented in raising Pokémon, but also in cooking!"
Kenji replied, "Well, I have to live on my own from now on. And it's not just me, but also Bewear and Growlithe."
Jenny Jun understood. She picked up a piece of shiitake mushroom with her chopsticks and tasted it, finding it surprisingly delicious.
"By the way, Kenji," Jenny Jun looked at the boy opposite her and asked, "I have a question for you. Why were you unwilling to return to the family back then?" The Jenny family was clearly a better choice than an orphanage, wasn't it? Jenny Jun had been very puzzled by this.
Kenji: "..."
He didn't know what the original Kenji was thinking either. After a moment of contemplation, Kenji said, "Because this is the place where I grew up, and my parents are also here... so I didn't want to leave." In his memory, the original Kenji would return to the breeding center every so often to take a look. He probably really couldn't bear to part with this place.
Jenny Jun nodded and didn't say much more. The two chatted while they ate. After lunch, she said goodbye to Kenji and returned to Fallarbor Town on her motorcycle.
After Jenny left, Kenji went to the incubation room, his gaze sweeping over the twenty Pokémon eggs one by one. Information began to appear in his mind.
[Lotad Egg: A Pokémon egg that can hatch a Water/Grass-type Pokémon, Lotad.]
[Health: Healthy]
[Father: Ludicolo (Elite-level)]
[Mother: Tropius (Elite-level)]
"A Lotad, huh... only Elite-level..." Kenji continued to look.
[Skitty Egg], [Poochyena Egg], [Zigzagoon Egg], [Wurmple Egg], [Trapinch Egg], [Cacnea Egg], [Chimecho Egg], [Wynaut Egg], [Castform Egg]...
They were all very ordinary and common Pokémon eggs, many of them duplicates. The highest strength of the parent Pokémon was only Gym Leader-level. As for the higher Elite Four-level, there were none. However, for wild Pokémon, this was already quite good.
Kenji scanned them carefully. The incubation periods for these eggs varied, from as long as two months to as short as a few days. For the children living in the countryside of Fallarbor Town, these Pokémon eggs were an excellent start. It was much better than them having to brave numerous dangers to catch wild Pokémon.
Now that the Pokémon eggs had finally arrived, the first person Kenji thought of was the boy who had come to the breeding center wanting to buy a starter Pokémon egg. The boy's name was Leaf, and he really liked Dragon-type Pokémon.
The breeding center didn't have Dragon-type Pokémon like Dratini or Dragonair, but among this batch of eggs, there was one Pokémon that was a Dragon-type.
Trapinch.
Although Trapinch was only a Ground-type Pokémon, when it evolved into Vibrava and then Flygon, the Dragon type would be added to its typing.
Uhh... rounding up, it counts as a dragon Pokémon, right? It should be able to satisfy Leaf's request.
Thinking of this, Kenji immediately took out the contact information Leaf had left behind and dialed the number on the recently installed phone.
After hearing that the breeding center finally had unhatched Pokémon eggs, Leaf immediately came speeding over from Fallarbor Town on his bicycle.
"Owner!" The boy excitedly pushed open the door to the breeding center.
Kenji was behind the counter, grooming Growlithe's fur.
As soon as he entered, Leaf noticed that the breeding center had changed quite a bit since his last visit. It had become much livelier! Last time, the entire breeding center only had the owner, Bewear, and Growlithe. Now, there were lots of Clefairy! Some were resting on the sofa, some were cleaning with brooms, and some were tending to the flowers on the windowsill.
So... so many Clefairy! Leaf was a little surprised. Were these all the owner's Pokémon?
"Long time no see, Leaf. A new batch of Pokémon eggs arrived at the breeding center this morning. I'm not sure if there's a Pokémon you'd like inside," Kenji said, pausing his grooming of Growlithe.
"I want to see!" Leaf said hastily.
Kenji nodded and led Leaf towards the incubation room. As soon as they entered, Leaf saw the twenty unhatched Pokémon eggs placed in the nest-like incubators.
"Wow! So many!"
There were too many to introduce one by one. Kenji thought for a moment and asked, "Do you have any requirements for your starter Pokémon?"
Leaf: "I want a Dragon-type Pokémon! I really like dragon Pokémon, they're so cool!"
Seeing this, Kenji thought to himself, as expected.
He walked to the Trapinch egg and said, "In this batch of Pokémon eggs, there is only one Pokémon that meets your requirements."
