Chapter 84: Chapter 84: A Show to Remember
The battlefield, once smooth and pristine, had turned into a cratered war zone, battered by the relentless assault of Hydro Pump and Water Gun.
Standing at the epicenter of the chaos, Blastoise panted heavily. It glared at the unscathed Machamp that had shrugged off every attack, its mind brimming with frustration. If only Pokémon could curse, Blastoise might have let loose a heartfelt "Motherf—!"
Machamp, on the other hand, looked utterly satisfied.
It wasn't about the power of Blastoise's attacks. Rather, the constant barrage had given Machamp an excellent opportunity to refine its evasion techniques.
"That's enough, Machamp! Use fourfold Focus Punch!" Ron shouted with authority.
At first, Ron had considered letting Machamp tank a few hits, enduring just enough to show its resilience before charging in for a dramatic, hard-fought finish.
But then, inspiration struck. He decided to lean into the crowd's perception of Machamp as a close-range fighter with no long-distance capabilities, emphasizing its agility and dodging prowess.
This strategy would mislead opponents into devising countermeasures for Machamp's apparent weaknesses, only for Ron to exploit their miscalculations later. After all, manipulating betting odds was an art.
At Ron's command, Machamp surged forward with astonishing speed. Despite not using Soru (Six Powers' Shave technique), its training ensured its movements were lightning-quick.
Blastoise's trainer, Yuzu, frantically issued commands, but exhaustion had already taken its toll. The once-dominant Blastoise was too slow to react.
Left with no options, Yuzu called for Blastoise to retreat into its shell to bolster its defenses.
Machamp leaped into the air and struck with fourfold Focus Punch, pummeling Blastoise with a ferocity that drove it deeper into the ground. Blow after blow, like hammering nails, until Blastoise disappeared beneath the battlefield.
As the dust settled, Yuzu stared at the muscular Machamp, a strange admiration flickering in her eyes. There was a brutal elegance to Machamp's sheer power, a kind of violent beauty that set her heart racing.
If Ron had known her thoughts, he might've suggested a trip to a psychiatrist to rule out any latent masochistic tendencies.
After wrapping up his first battle, Ron returned to his room to unwind.
To be fair, Silph Co. treated its tournament participants well. The accommodations included not just a private room but also amenities like an indoor pool, training facilities, and a practice battlefield. Their goal was clear: to ensure the trainers performed at their peak.
Relaxing in his room, Ron fell into a routine that reminded him of his days at the Pokémon Center—training, eating, and sleeping. If a match was scheduled, Silph Co.'s staff would promptly notify him.
Ron's second match took place the next morning.
True to the adage "underestimate your opponents strategically, but respect them tactically," Ron diligently reviewed footage of his next opponent, Takeuchi.
Takeuchi's signature Pokémon was an Ampharos from Johto. For most trainers, identifying it might take a moment, but for Ron, who could rival the Pokédex in encyclopedic knowledge, it was child's play.
Recognizing that Ampharos excelled at ranged attacks, Ron smiled. His plan was unfolding perfectly.
"Ampharos, use Thunderbolt!"
Ampharos unleashed a surge of electricity, its bolts an unusual cerulean blue rather than the typical yellow.
Takeuchi, having studied Machamp's agility, instructed Ampharos to spread its attack, creating a storm-like field to limit Machamp's ability to dodge.
"Machamp, dodge and advance!"
At Ron's command, Machamp darted forward, weaving through the lightning with fluid grace. Its movements seemed almost at odds with its bulky frame.
Watching in real-time was a different experience than merely analyzing videos. Though Takeuchi was taken aback by Machamp's speed, he quickly regained his composure.
"Ampharos, spread the electric field further with Thunder Wave!"
The strategy was sound. By covering the battlefield with electricity, Ampharos aimed to paralyze Machamp, slowing it down or even halting its movements altogether. Unlike in the games, paralysis in real life could incapacitate a Pokémon completely due to the pain of the electrical surges.
"Machamp, use the ground as your shield and charge forward!" Ron countered.
With a mighty stomp, Machamp shattered the ground beneath it, hoisting a massive chunk of earth to shield itself from the incoming electricity as it charged.
Though physics in the Pokémon world often bent to fantasy, the idea of using stone as an insulator still held some merit. The strategy worked—partially. While the makeshift shield blocked the dispersed currents, a more concentrated attack could have easily broken through.
"Now, Ampharos, use Zap Cannon!"
Takeuchi's voice rang out as Ampharos gathered all its energy. The battlefield crackled as electric blue currents enveloped Ampharos, making it resemble a living cannon.
The charged projectile rocketed toward Machamp, obliterating its stone shield on impact.
But as the dust cleared, Takeuchi was stunned to see Machamp charging forward from the left.
Ron had deliberately avoided using Soru for a quicker finish, opting instead to let Machamp continue running. After all, the longer the match, the higher the payout.
"Ampharos, use Dragon Pulse!"
Takeuchi barely had time to process what was happening before issuing his next command.
A surge of draconic energy shot toward Machamp, its shimmering form roaring silently as it barreled forward.
"Machamp, smash through with double Strength and close the distance!" Ron countered.
With a mighty leap, Machamp met the attack head-on, its powerful arms shattering the Dragon Pulse.
The gap between the two Pokémon vanished. Ampharos was now within range of Machamp's gaze.
"Let's end this, Machamp. Glare!"
Machamp's eyes glinted menacingly, freezing Ampharos mid-motion as it attempted to charge another Thunderbolt.
"Now, finish it! double Close Combat!"
Ron's command echoed through the arena.
Ampharos could only watch helplessly as Machamp's massive fists closed in, delivering a devastating series of punches that sealed the battle.
