Chapter 38: Chapter 38 The Dungeon Beneath the City Wall (Part 2)
The dungeon itself was man-made, but very, very old. So old that in some places the stone blocks that made up its walls had crumbled to dust. Some of the tunnels showed signs of repair and were relatively well preserved.
Especially the corridor leading outside the walls, which we discovered almost immediately. It had been carefully maintained. The other tunnels were less fortunate, and their walls had not been touched by a human hand for many years. Throughout the dungeon, there were traces of rat activity in the form of gnawed bones, scraps of cloth, and remnants of some objects. Human skulls were not uncommon, clearly indicating that many surface dwellers had ended their lives here.
Human remains were especially common under the shafts in the ceiling, which went steeply upward somewhere - apparently the dungeon was used to dispose of corpses. Judging by the clothing, most of the dead were men, a clear indication of the matriarchy that reigned in the city.
A few mines were explored by tentacle monsters at my request. But alas - they all ended in grates or solid trap doors.
After a few hours, the dungeon was fully explored, and the monster elder handed me a hand-drawn charcoal map on a piece of cloth (found here). Judging by the markings on the map and what I had seen earlier, there were only two ways out of the dungeon: into the basement to Alaisse's minions and beyond the city walls.
All other tunnels were either blocked or led to rooms whose purpose could only be guessed at. The only exception was a huge hall with columns carved out of basalt, the purpose of which was clearly indicated by a huge altar on the wall farthest from the entrance.
Above it, on the basalt wall, were carved images of two kneeling men, surrounded by an unexpectedly beautiful ornament of skulls and bones. Between them was an inscription (which I could easily read, thanks to the system).
«The Goddess of Destruction does not grant honor or glory, but power. Only those whose lives remain in shards will be able to call upon Valdra.»
Year 702 of the Age of Light, Nana Astrea
The laws of genre and logic clearly stated that something important must be hidden in this room. But what exactly it was, we never managed to find, even though the monsters and I had studied every millimeter of it. My night vision had reached the third level, and now I could see everything for a hundred meters around.
«What year is it?» I asked the head of the tentacle monster, thinking that the date on the inscription might be a clue.
473, as far as I knew.
«So this inscription is from the future, right?»
«Probably...» one of the tentacle monsters raised his voice.
«It's more likely from a time so far in the past that a different chronology was used then,» the elder interrupted him. «It says 'Age of Light.' And no one uses epochs for dates now.»
Further questioning revealed that I had met some very illiterate monsters - they had never heard of Valdra, and they didn't know who Nana Astrea was.
Desperate to solve the mystery of the underground sanctuary, we decided to head for the exit of the city. But somewhere along the way, a resounding thud echoed through the dungeon.
The tentacle monsters were experienced underground dwellers, and they recognized the source of the sound without a doubt. Obeying the Elder's command, the trio of monsters immediately rushed to the ceiling, and we took our time to follow.
In the middle of the corridor, we found a corpse lying on its back with its pants down and a stab wound on its chest. The body belonged to a middle-aged man with a blissful expression on his face. The trio of monsters sent here could not be seen, but from the shaft in the ceiling of the corridor, a woman's scream could be clearly heard.
«Quick, help me get this one up,» the elder ordered his subordinates. Judging by the tense voice, something bad was about to happen....
I only realized what was about to happen when I was braided with tentacles, dragged through the shaft, and released into the room above. The monsters immediately lost interest in me and pounced on the five women who had been fighting a trio of their brethren from the squad sent by the Elder.
A dozen tentacle monsters immediately broke the women's resistance and tore off their clothes with their tentacles. Then they began to fuck them selflessly in all their holes. Everything happened so fast that I couldn't even get a good look at the beauties.
«Sorry, we have instincts...» muttered the monster closest to me, while at the same time he and a nearby fellow monster were raping a slender, long-legged blonde. «We see a woman, we can only think of her until we've satisfied our lust.»
Here the horror of the situation hit me - the monsters were raping their victims in a room that was probably in the basement of a house in the city. And if anyone saw them now, the city guards or adventurers would quickly rush in and kill my new allies. So when I saw a ladder at the far end of the room, I rushed to it, hoping to find a way to lock the cellar.
Climbing up, I came to a door. Unfortunately, there were no locks on the inside. I wanted to open it and look outside, but then I realized that I was in the form of an orc. I had to hang the amulet around my neck and get dressed (I had my bag with me, and I had packed my human clothes in it).
The door didn't look like anything special at first, but when I opened it and stepped over the threshold, the sounds coming from the basement were cut off - there was obviously some cool soundproofing magic going on. The door on the outside, it turned out, could be locked.
But if I locked it, I'd have to go through the town to get to the dungeon entrance, then go downstairs to find the right mine, and then wait there until the tentacled monsters had calm down enough to make their minds override their instincts. And the rats in the dungeon may well attack me when they realize that most of the enemies have left....
