Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Adapting to Life at Sea – Before the Big Event (Part 3)
When Jialai saw the light of day again, it was at dusk. The roaring waves tossed the barrel
she was in violently across the sea. Dizzy and nauseous, she held onto the few remaining fruits in the barrel, stuffing them into her mouth when things finally settled down.
When the barrel was suddenly split open, what greeted the crew was a bizarre sight: a short-haired woman dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, holding fruits in both hands, stuffing her cheeks until her face looked unrecognizable.
The sudden glare of light made Jialai instinctively raise her right arm to shield her eyes, all the while swallowing the food in her mouth without missing a beat.
"Captain, there's someone inside this barrel!" a voice exclaimed in surprise.
As her eyes adjusted to the light, Jialai looked around and realized she was standing on a massive deck, surrounded by a crowd of people. Beyond the ship stretched the deep blue sea, and near her feet was a pair of colossal legs.
Jialai craned her neck to follow the giant legs upwards, straining until her neck felt like it would snap, yet she still couldn't see the owner's head.
Am I really fated to keep running into giants? she thought wryly. Lowering her head, she noticed that the fruit in her right hand was the same one she had taken a bite out of earlier and found unbearably bitter. She hadn't thrown it away out of frugality, but now she was so startled that she flung it far away. The purple fruit rolled across the deck, coming to a stop with the bitten side facing her again.
Jialai plopped onto the ground in fright, her mind blank.
The unbitten part of the purple fruit bore strange patterns. Jialai really didn't want to entertain certain suspicions, but her trembling hands and feet betrayed her, unsure whether it was out of excitement or fear.
"Who are you?" A pirate with a blade strapped to his back stepped forward.
"Me?" Jialai looked up dazedly, her probing gaze sweeping across his arm until she spotted the pirate crew's emblem—a symbol of the Whitebeard Pirates.
Could this giant really be Little Oars? Jialai glanced back up. Judging by his terrifying height, it had to be him.
Feigning calm, Jialai patted imaginary dust off her clothes and stood up with an awkward smile. "Hello, everyone!"
"Who are you? Why were you in a barrel?" another person demanded.
Jialai's lips twitched as she debated whether to tell the truth. After a moment, her eyes sparkled with an idea. She lunged forward, hugging one of Little Oars' toes with a pitiful expression, her voice trembling as she began to act:
"Oh, thank goodness, I've finally found living people! Boohoo... I used to live on a small island, but one day, while I was by the shore, some unidentified people kidnapped me and stuffed me into a barrel... It was terrifying... Later, I didn't know what was going on... I thought I was still on their ship... Boohoo... Could it be that the people who kidnapped me were you?"
"No way!" the crowd immediately denied in unison.
"Oh? Then why am I here?" Jialai sniffled, pretending to sob as she clung to Little Oars' toe. She subtly wiped some spit on her finger and dabbed it on the corner of her eye for effect.
"Our captain saved you."
"Captain?" Jialai feigned ignorance, glancing around. "Where is your captain?"
"He's right in front of you!" someone kindly pointed out.
Before Jialai could react, she felt herself being lifted off the ground. As her body ascended, she finally came face to face with Little Oars' massive head.
To her shock, Little Oars was gazing at her with tears streaming down his face. "Were you really kidnapped?"
How is this guy so gullible?! Jialai wanted to scream, but instead, her lips curled into a smile. "Yes, I'm Jialai. Did you save me?"
Little Oars nodded enthusiastically, still holding her. "I'm Oars."
So it really was him—the adorably dim-witted giant! Jialai's smile brightened as she extended a hand to him. "Oars, you're a good person. It's nice to meet you."
Little Oars carefully extended a finger, lightly tapping her hand in what he probably thought was a handshake. Perched on his shoulder, Jialai was relieved. She hadn't expected to infiltrate the Whitebeard Pirates so easily. Finally, her luck was turning!
"Oars, I'm starving. Do you have anything to eat?" Jialai leaned against him, already treating him as her personal transportation.
At her words, a massive slab of roasted meat, big enough to crush her if dropped, appeared in front of her. For a moment, Jialai felt as small as an ant staring at an elephant.
But hunger overrode her hesitation. She dove onto the meat, tearing off a chunk with her teeth and devouring it ravenously.
"Jialai-chan, how long has it been since you last ate?" Oars asked, watching her with curiosity.
"I… I don't remember." Jialai swallowed a mouthful and quickly fabricated a story. "I used to be really, really fat. But because I went so long without food… I became like this…"
Oars listened, heart aching, as Jialai exaggeratedly gestured to indicate her supposed former size. He handed her another massive piece of roasted meat.
Choking on her current portion, Jialai rolled her eyes. "Can I get some water, please?" She stared at the giant slab in despair. There was no way she could finish even one piece!
