Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Jack’s Bounty Poster
With the arrival of King's trusted officers, Jack and his crew were preparing to leave the island of Ailen. Jack's mood was light, a rare occurrence considering he'd spent days being hauled around like a sack of potatoes, held aloft by an eagle only to be dropped from the sky repeatedly. But the results spoke for themselves. Even though the system's interface showed no updates, Jack had a strong sense that his Immortal Body had grown significantly stronger.
Kaido had once explained the stages of immortality to Jack in detail. According to him, the state of "Immortal Body" could be divided into four levels. The most grueling leap was from beginner to intermediate, while advancing from intermediate to advanced was relatively straightforward.
At the intermediate stage, there was no further strengthening of the body's resilience, but rather an increased resistance to various abnormal states. Once immortality reached the advanced level, one could survive even after falling into the sea—a normally fatal situation for Devil Fruit users. However, Jack found little value in this ability.
When immortality reached the fourth level and combined with the awakened Zoan-type Devil Fruit powers, it resulted in a qualitative transformation. Kaido himself was at this stage. He could leap from ten thousand meters high without a scratch, bathe in magma, soak his feet in molten iron, and withstand full-force attacks imbued with Haki without so much as blinking. His internal organs—beyond even the limits of the Fishmen, who were naturally strong—could endure unimaginable strain.
According to Kaido, this was the pinnacle of immortality as recorded in Oni Tribe lore. Whether it could go further was unknown, though Kaido's occasional skydiving stunts and penchant for picking fights suggested he was keen to test those limits.
But Jack believed in the existence of a fifth level. If Kaido's fourth-level immortality was already monstrous, then achieving the fifth level would make Jack practically invincible. Regular attacks wouldn't even scratch him.
Determined, Jack resolved to push his Immortal Body to its peak. He planned to spend more time outside the safety of his ship, seeking battles and rewards that could boost his progression. He also decided to postpone any grudges until he was undeniably stronger. His recent brush with Ashura Doji had taught him to temper his arrogance. Even with the system's support, death was still a one-way trip.
"Not until my body is as indestructible as Kaido's," he muttered. "Only then will I truly be free to roam without fear."
...
Inside the Ship
"Rim! Rim!" Jack called out, his voice echoing through the corridors. Receiving no response, he stormed into the cabin to find Rim flirting shamelessly with a group of girls. Jack's hand twitched with the urge to throttle him, but his anger faded as he caught sight of Master sitting nearby.
"That look in his eyes…" Jack thought with a shudder. "Rim, your days are numbered. You'd better watch your back."
Giving up on Rim, Jack turned to another crewmate. "Holdem!" he shouted.
"Holdem! Where are you?"
Following the sound of groaning, Jack stepped onto the deck to see Holdem sprawled out, nursing yet another injury from his bizarre "iron crotch training." Jack pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Hopeless," he muttered. "This crew is a circus."
"Hey, you! Notify the crew to finish checks and prepare to set sail! We're leaving!"
"My name is Rune, not 'you,' Jack-sama," the crewmate replied indignantly.
"Got it, you," Jack said, waving him off. Rune sighed but went to relay the orders.
As the Mammoth sailed away from the port, King's masked face betrayed a faint smile.
"Drought Jack, hmm? A fitting title. Let's see if you can truly live up to it and become the Beast Pirates' Third All-Star. Don't disappoint Kaido-sama."
...
The High Seas
It took only three days to leave the Beast Pirates' territory. The open seas were chaos incarnate. Battles and death ruled these waters, and every encounter with another ship was a potential fight. For the first time, Jack truly felt the impact of the Pirate King Roger's legacy. Roger's final words had inspired an explosion in the number of pirates.
Jack's Mammoth bore the Beast Pirates' flag, but the central mast displayed a massive snarling mammoth head with the word "Shinuchi" emblazoned beneath it, marking Jack's rank as a trusted officer. Despite the flag, many pirates saw Jack as a target, eager to prove themselves.
Jack relished the combat, his blood surging with excitement. Thanks to his durable body and solid Haki, he dominated most opponents. However, the rewards were often disappointing—mere gold, Beli, or, at best, a few attribute points.
Destruction followed in Jack's wake. A few foolishly defiant small nations were reduced to rubble by his mammoth form. Yet, even after months at sea, Jack hadn't encountered a single Devil Fruit user, underscoring just how rare those powers were.
Still, his efforts bore fruit. His Immortal Body advanced, his Observation Haki reached intermediate mastery, and his physical stats surpassed 90. Rim and Holdem also showed improvement, adapting fully to their enhanced bodies through constant battle.
A Shocking Revelation
Just as Jack was debating whether to hunt down two rival pirate crews, a news coo landed on the deck. Master handed it a coin, and the bird produced a folded newspaper from its bag before flying off.
Master's eyes lit up as he scanned the pages. "Jack-sama! We've been given bounties!"
Jack froze. Was being wanted a good thing? Wait, he was a pirate. Of course, it was.
Taking the newspaper, Jack unfolded it to see a massive photo of himself grinning savagely, blood dripping from his sharp teeth. It was a terrifying image, nightmare fuel for anyone who saw it.
"Drought Jack," he read aloud. "Bounty: 250,000,000 Belly." He blinked. "Two hundred and fifty million? Already? And the 'Drought' title… we haven't even officially decided on that!"
Then it clicked. He remembered Holdem's favorite boast during fights:
"You fools! Bow before the Beast Pirates' Drought Jack-sama!"
Jack groaned. "Holdem… I'm going to kill you."
But despite himself, a wicked grin spread across his face. Things were about to get a lot more interesting.
