Konoha's Fourth Training Ground
"Did Sasame-sensei trick us?"
Uzumaki Naruto asked listlessly.
Yesterday, he had received a notice from Yūhi Kurenai and had been excited ever since.
Even arriving at the Fourth Training Ground hadn't dulled his enthusiasm.
But now, nearly two hours had passed, and there was still no sign of Sasame.
His fervor had cooled considerably.
"He wouldn't do that," Hyūga Hinata defended. "Sasame-nii doesn't lie."
Up in a tree, Uchiha Sasuke stood with his hands in his pockets, his expression unchanging.
Though inwardly, he was growing impatient.
"The sun's already high in the sky," Naruto groaned, flopping onto the ground. "If he doesn't show up soon, it'll be lunchtime."
"Sasame-nii is the Hokage now," Hinata reasoned. "He must be busy."
"Oh, right!" Naruto slapped his forehead in realization. "The Hokage is swamped with work."
"Morning."
Sasame appeared on the training ground in an instant, startling both Naruto and Sasuke.
Unfamiliar with the Flying Thunder God Technique, they found his arrival far too abrupt.
"Sasame-sensei!"
Naruto sprang to his feet, eyes gleaming. "Do we have a mission?"
Seeing this, Sasuke leapt down from the tree. Despite his usual indifference, he was looking forward to a mission.
After all, he had been stuck in Konoha this whole time, only sparring with kids—never facing a real life-or-death battle.
How could he ever hope to defeat Uchiha Itachi like this?
"Yep. And it's an S-rank," Sasame said after a moment's thought.
By the shinobi world's standards, an S-rank mission involved national or village secrets, bounties exceeding a million ryō, and tasks like warfare, assassinating key figures, or eliminating enemy ninja squads.
The Hokage, undoubtedly, was a key figure.
Labeling this as S-rank wasn't unreasonable.
"S-rank?!"
Naruto's eyes bulged as he blurted out the words.
As a shinobi, he knew exactly what that meant.
Under normal circumstances, genin would never be assigned an S-rank mission.
That was just suicide.
Even the usually unflappable Sasuke looked genuinely surprised.
Only Hinata remained calm.
In her eyes, Sasame could do no wrong.
It was a kind of blind, unwavering trust.
"What is it?!"
Naruto's excitement quickly returned.
With his personality, he didn't care about the deeper implications—he was just thrilled at the idea of an S-rank mission.
Sasuke sighed internally. Of course he'd react like this.
"Escort the Hokage to the capital of the Land of Fire," Sasame said with a smile.
"Escort the Hokage… so that's just protecting you, Sasame-sensei?"
Naruto blinked, then deflated. "Where's the danger in that?"
When the Hokage traveled, it was usually with ANBU and a full security detail.
Three genin would just be dead weight.
"Nope. Just the four of us," Sasame corrected.
"Then count me in!"
Naruto pumped his fist. "I'll protect you, sensei!"
Sasuke, however, frowned.
The Hokage traveling alone?
That meant the danger was serious.
An S-rank rating made sense.
His fists clenched instinctively—a flicker of fear, quickly suppressed.
As an Uchiha, he wouldn't back down from any challenge.
Sasame observed their reactions.
Overall, not bad.
But reality might be different.
In the original timeline, an older Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura had faced Zabuza Momochi.
Their first real battle had been a disaster, frozen in fear under his killing intent.
Now, though stronger, they still lacked true combat experience.
And the assassins coming for Sasame?
They'd be ruthless rogue ninja—merciless killers.
"You've got an hour to prepare. Meet at the village gates," Sasame instructed. "Bring spare clothes and enough tools."
"Got it!"
Naruto bolted off like a man possessed.
Sasuke vanished in a blur of motion.
"Sasame-nii, see you soon," Hinata said with a small nod before leaving politely.
Sasame watched them go, then returned to the Hokage's office.
He'd spent the morning with Tsunade and lost track of time—hence the delay.
Now that he was leaving the village, he needed to inform Yūhi Kurenai and the others.
No one should think the Hokage had vanished barely two days into his tenure.
He picked up a file—a list of shinobi who had supported Sarutobi Asuma during the last jonin meeting.
Most were from the Sarutobi and Shimura clans.
Sasame planned to assign them riskier missions in the future.
A perfectly legitimate way to weaken them.
"Thanks, Kurenai-nee."
He set the file down and glanced at her.
She wore a fitted skirt, black stockings, and a stern yet elegant expression—reminding him of a few office-themed films.
Ahem.
Purely accidental.
"I'm heading to the capital today," he said. "While I'm gone, I'll need you to oversee things."
Between the Hokage's secretaries and advisory council, the village would run smoothly even without him.
"Understood!" Kurenai nodded. "I'll notify Kakashi and Might Guy, then arrange an ANBU escort."
"No need." Sasame waved a hand. "I'm going alone."
"That's too dangerous!" Kurenai protested.
"Kurenai-nee, openly defying the Hokage's orders isn't a secretary's job," he teased.
"I—I didn't mean it like that!" Flustered, she clarified, "I'm just worried about your safety."
"I get it. But you should trust the Hokage, you know?" He winked. "The Hokage is Konoha's strongest shinobi."
"…Sorry."
Blushing slightly, Kurenai nodded.
"No need to apologize." He leaned back. "Anything else?"
"Yes."
She produced a letter. "This is a personal message from the Kazekage."
Sasame raised an eyebrow.
Kazekage Rasa?
In the original timeline, Orochimaru had assassinated him, then impersonated him to drag Suna into the Konoha Crush.
In the end, Hiruzen died, Orochimaru lost his arms, and Gaara became the biggest winner—succeeding as Kazekage.
But now, thanks to Sasame, Orochimaru remained in Konoha.
Rasa was still alive—and had even contributed 90 Fate Points.
He opened the letter, expecting a request for the Chunin Exams.
Instead, it was an offer of alliance.
Currently, Suna and Konoha's relationship was far from close—merely neutral.
During the Third Shinobi War, the two villages hadn't clashed—Suna had been too busy fending off Kumo's invasion to expand outward.
After the war, the Land of Wind had been displeased, slashing Suna's funding.
That was why Orochimaru's Konoha Crush plan had worked so smoothly.
Suna was desperate.
Konoha, rich and prosperous, made for an irresistible target.
And after the plan failed, Suna had quickly sought an alliance—relying on Konoha to ease their financial strain.
Sasame finished reading and fell into thought.
If he didn't know about Shimura Danzō's presence in Suna, he might have taken this at face value.
After all, Rasa was practically a gold miner now, struggling to keep his village afloat.
But with Danzō in the picture?
Things got complicated.
Still, this was a golden opportunity.
A chance to display Konoha's strength and secure Suna as an ally—cementing Sasame's position as Hokage.
"Kurenai-nee, draft a reply," he said at last. "Tell them Konoha agrees to the alliance. We'll discuss specifics later."
"Understood."
She wasn't surprised. Most would choose peace over war.
Admiring her retreating figure, Sasame stretched.
He still had time before the hour was up, so instead of heading to the gates, he went to the Mizukage's office.
Over the past three years, Kirigakure had grown far wealthier.
First, Mei Terumī had ended Yagura's bloody reign, gradually rebuilding ties with neighboring nations.
Second, the opening of five new trade routes had brought in a steady stream of travelers—and business.
But old wounds didn't heal easily.
The village's core problem remained: too few shinobi.
Between the Third and Fourth Mizukages, Kirigakure had lost countless ninja.
Rebuilding that strength in three years was impossible.
"Morning, Mizukage-sama."
Sasame plopped onto her desk without ceremony.
"It's noon," Mei remarked, unfazed.
After three years, they knew each other well.
The only barrier left was unspoken.
But she was fine with that.
She was the Mizukage. He led a shadowy organization.
A real relationship wasn't feasible.
"Why are you still wearing that?" Sasame sighed. "It doesn't do you justice."
After years of leadership, Mei had matured into a capable Kage—much like her future self in the original timeline.
"I'm the Mizukage, not your subordinate," she retorted coolly. "What I wear is none of your concern."
"What if I broker an alliance between Kiri and Konoha?"
He grinned.
Konoha and Kiri's relations were strained, thanks to the Third War.
First, the Seven Ninja Swordsmen's ambush.
Then, Isobu's suicide bombing.
Both had led to deaths—Might Duy and Rin Nohara.
Mei had previously proposed alliances to the other villages, believing Kiri couldn't afford more conflict.
But Kumo and Konoha had refused.
The former simply wasn't interested. The latter cited past grievances.
Now, with Sasame as Hokage—and three more years passed—an alliance was feasible.
If Kiri paid a price, Konoha might agree.
"You can do that?"
Skepticism laced her voice.
She'd investigated Sasame.
Konoha had no shinobi named "Takashi," and he had no ties to the Thousand Sunny Trading Company.
Though he'd claimed connections, she hadn't fully believed him.
At most, he knew a few ninja.
But an alliance?
That required the Hokage's approval.
"Of course."
His gaze drifted to her slender neck, then lower—watching the rise and fall of her breath.
Mei noticed but ignored it.
After years of this, she was used to his shameless staring.
She cared more about whether he was bluffing.
Even with his resources, manipulating Konoha—the strongest village—was impossible.
"Konoha has a new Hokage. You know that, right?"
Sasame changed the subject.
"Yes. Tsunade's student—Sasame. Extremely young."
She narrowed her eyes. "Do you know him?"
"Haven't you seen his portrait?"
"Not yet. Konoha's far away, and Sasame wasn't well-known before. We didn't pay attention."
"I see."
So that's why she didn't recognize me.
He leaned in suddenly, their lips almost touching.
"W-What are you—?"
Mei jerked back, heart pounding.
"Just giving you a good look at the new Hokage."
He smirked, pretending innocence.
Her flustered reaction pleased him.
She does have feelings for me.
"What?"
She turned back, staring—too shocked to mind their proximity.
His breath warmed her skin, his scent filling her space.
"I am the Hokage."
"…"
Her pupils shrank, lips parting slightly.
Only after a long pause did she realize how close they were.
Blushing, she turned away again. "D-Don't joke like that."
"You think just anyone can use the Flying Thunder God?"
He grinned. "If you don't believe me, I'll take you to the Hokage's office."
Mei froze.
Could it be true?
This was… absurd.
Staring at his unfairly handsome face, she was at a loss.
If he's the Hokage, then these past three years…
Have I been betraying Kiri?
The traitor was me all along?
And I'm the Mizukage?!
"…What are your terms?"
In the end, she couldn't refuse the benefits of an alliance.
Working with Sasame had brought Kiri immense gains, cutting years off its recovery.
If an alliance meant peace, she could accept it.
"First—return the Byakugan to the Hyūga clan."
He held up a finger.
Might as well earn some goodwill from my future father-in-law.
"Fine."
After a moment's thought, she agreed.
The Byakugan wasn't as powerful as rumors suggested.
For Ao, its boost was minimal.
Returning it was a small price.
"Second—how about the Mizukage's first kiss?"
His tone shifted playfully.
"What?!"
"Impossible!" she snapped.
"Suit yourself."
He hadn't seriously expected her to agree—just wanted to tease her.
But her reaction…
Why does it feel like she's disappointed I didn't push harder?
Does she think I'm not interested?
Before he could ponder further, Mei suddenly stood, grabbed him—
And bit his lip.
