Chapter 6: Chapter 6
Memory searching, or mind reading, is a method that is generally avoided in times of peace. However, during wartime, it becomes commonplace. During these times, ninjas, seeking to obtain any useful information, resort to reading the minds of their targets as the most effective method. But there are few masters of this art, and the Yamanaka clan of Konoha is considered one of the best.
Typically, ninjas torture their captives first. If that doesn't work, they use genjutsu to force the target to give up information. If even hypnosis can't break the target's will, the only option is to directly penetrate the mind and read thoughts and memories. The third method can lead to a mild mental disorder, and in the worst case, to amnesia or dementia, so it is rarely used. However, during war, no one remembers about humanity. Even the most insignificant information can be important, so ninjas are ready to use any means to obtain it.
Kano was just a child who couldn't control chakra, and Sarutobi, even if he was acting in Konoha's interests, wouldn't immediately resort to extreme measures.
However, if the genjutsu does not work, then the question of whether he is a spy from another village will indeed require careful consideration. After all, one of the necessary qualities of a spy is an unwavering will, and immunity to genjutsu is quite normal. Some particularly skilled spies can even give out false information while under illusion or hypnosis.
Ninja always act quickly. Not even three minutes had passed since the decision had been made, when two Anbu appeared in Kano's room using the Body Flicker Technique. At that moment, the boy was diligently gobbling up his food, completely unaware of the two silent intruders who had appeared behind him.
"Kano?" said the Anbu in the grey fox mask on the left.
Kano jumped in surprise and turned around abruptly, seeing two strangely dressed people. They were dressed in tight black suits, each had a sword on their back, and their faces were hidden by masks.
"You...?" Kano wanted to ask who they were, but the one who spoke first interrupted him: "Come with us."
The strange clothes and the unceremonious, slightly cold tone made Kano tense up. Without thinking for a second, he grabbed a ceramic plate and rushed to the window. Even when he was brought into this room, he studied the situation and thought of two ways to retreat.
The Anbu had not expected such a violent reaction. And while they were confused, Kano had already placed his hand on the window sill, preparing to jump out. The Anbu's clothes and their tone alone had touched his sensitive nerves, and he decided to run, not taking into account the ninja's skills.
However, as soon as his hand touched the window sill, the Anbu who had reacted immediately appeared behind him and knocked him unconscious with one blow without causing any harm. It was obvious that he had excellent control over his strength, because Kano was only a child with a fragile constitution.
A pain shot through the back of his head, and Kano felt his chest go cold as he sank into darkness. He had felt safe while eating, believing that he had found a place where he could calmly explore this world. But when he was hit, that newly formed thought evaporated, and his perception of Konoha was completely formed. Now, both his first and second impressions were terrible, and it would be very difficult to correct them in the future. If there were such a thing as "what if" in this world, then looking back on today's decision, he would probably still regret it...
Kano opened his eyes. The first thing he felt was the stiffness in his arms and legs. Looking down, he saw that he was tied to a chair. He didn't panic or curse. After meeting Orochimaru and Tsunade, he realized that now he was just a pathetic bug that could be crushed at any moment.
He knew panic was useless and began to look around. The large room was dark. The only light came from two white candles on the armrests of a chair. The weak light couldn't even illuminate the walls, only allowing him to see the floor two meters away. Everything else was in darkness.
Kano stopped looking around and tensed, but his bound hands did not move.
"I'm such a fool..." he thought to himself. However, when he met Orochimaru, he had no choice, and now it seemed like it was only a question of when he would die.
His childhood experience had taught him to regard strangers with a deep-seated wariness and to always consider the worst-case scenario. This was not just prudence, but the result of an encounter with darkness…
Just like now, he imagined several terrible scenarios that, despite the different developments, ended the same way - in death.
But… Kano didn't want to die. His eyes moved slightly, his face remained calm, but his thoughts were seething in his head. An unfamiliar room, his hands and feet tied, the lack of light – too many unfavorable factors.
"Don't worry, I won't hurt you," a soft voice suddenly came from the darkness. With a light noise of footsteps, a figure came out of the darkness and slowly approached Kano, stopping a meter away from him.
Kano's heart skipped a beat, but his face remained calm. He raised his head slightly and silently looked at the approaching man, his gaze sliding over the already familiar clothes and stopping at his face.
Thin lips pressed into a straight line, a straight nose, a pair of piercing eyes under straight eyebrows. Before him stood a man possessing both strength of spirit and a pleasant appearance.
"So this child…" Genya Yamanaka ignored Kano's scrutinizing gaze. Following his pre-determined plan, he decided to first win over the target with words, and then use genjutsu to find out all the details, avoiding the clan's secret technique if possible.
"Do you think I'll believe this childish tale?" Kano responded contemptuously to the man's words.
Genya was slightly taken aback and looked at the boy with surprise. He looked closely into his eyes, seeing only indifference, fear of death... and undisguised wariness.
This child…
He ran his index finger along his forehead protector, smiled self-deprecatingly, and said calmly, "Whether you believe it or not is irrelevant. The facts will put everything in its place."
Having said that, he looked intently into Kano's unchildishly serious eyes and quickly formed the seals: "Genjutsu: Dream Realm."
Kano watched in amazement as Genya Yamanaka's hands rapidly changed their movements. He noticed that each movement was imprinted in his memory with astonishing clarity. Before he could even begin to be surprised by his own suddenly sharpened memory and vision, he saw the man's eyes turn into two spinning vortexes that instantly expanded, engulfing everything around them, including Kano himself.
The endless darkness swallowed everything, but only for a moment before giving way to light again.
Kano opened his eyes and saw Koshibe sitting by the bed. His vision became clouded.
"Brother, what's wrong?" Koshibe asked worriedly. A shadow of worry appeared on her pale, thin face, and her large eyes looked at him questioningly.
"Nothing…" Kano shook his head. The sun rays coming through the window pleasantly warmed his body, and he took Koshibe's hand. Her palm was icy, the feeling was so real that it couldn't be a dream…
"Brother, why are you crying?"
"Huh?" Kano ran his hand over his cheek and felt moisture on his fingertips. He turned to the window, looked at the blue sky and said with a bitter smile, "Sand got in my eyes."
....
Seeing Kano's blank stare, Yamanaka Genya lowered his hands and quietly asked, "Where are you from?"
Kano didn't answer, remaining motionless like a doll.
Genya frowned, the genjutsu had undoubtedly worked. He paused and asked again, "What is your name?"
There was still no answer...
Genya frowned even more. He asked a few more questions, each time lowering the bar, but still received no answer.
"Perhaps he is a spy…" Genya said. When he first saw Kano, he did not believe this idea, because there was too much caution in the boy's eyes, which was not typical for a spy. However, the way Kano acted under the genjutsu made him doubt his initial assumptions.
After wasting half an hour, he still received no information.
"Nothing to do," Genya sighed. He didn't want to use the clan's secret technique on the child, but he didn't see any other way out...
