Chapter 55: Just Charge In
Nighttime at the Yamaki household. The current clan leader, Yamaki Kisekawa, bowed solemnly before the family shrine, muttering a silent prayer.
After a long while, he opened his eyes, his heart somewhat calmed. Yet, a lingering unease gnawed at him.
Turning around, he glanced at the ninja sitting not far away, sipping tea. He sighed—this very ninja was the source of his anxiety.
The tea-drinking ninja lifted his head, revealing his pure white eyes. As if he had heard Yamaki's sigh, he sneered coldly, "Clan Leader Yamaki, there's no need to worry. As long as you assist the Hyūga this time, once we defeat the Uchiha, your reward will be substantial. Besides, the Uchiha are already stretched thin. They don't have any spare Jōnin to deal with this area. What are you so afraid of?"
"I hope you're right…" Yamaki Kisekawa exhaled deeply.
To be honest, Yamaki Kisekawa had no desire to involve himself in this matter. The Yamaki Clan was a small family, with only two Jōnin, including himself. To him, both the Uchiha and the Hyūga were like towering giants—beings who could crush his clan with the flick of a finger. Even his clan's main family, the Chiba Clan, had been humbled by the Uchiha twenty years ago when they attempted to exploit a situation, and they had yet to recover from that defeat.
A mere ant like him—how could he dare to meddle in the conflicts of giants?
But he had no choice. This was an order from the Chiba Clan. The Hyūga had initially approached the Chiba Clan directly, bypassing him entirely.
However, the Chiba Clan, perhaps learning from their missteps two decades ago, hesitated this time. They vacillated, wary of provoking the Uchiha while also reluctant to sever ties with the Hyūga. Eventually, they came up with a compromise: delegate the task to their subordinate clan—the Yamaki. And so, here he was, caught in this mess.
The Hyūga Jōnin, sipping his tea, showed no outward displeasure despite his inner disdain. For him, securing the grain supply was paramount. As long as his clan's provisions were ample, they could outlast the Uchiha. Compared to the Hyūga, the Uchiha also faced pressure from the Senju. In the long run, the Uchiha would be the first to falter.
"Hmph, the Chiba Clan is truly cowardly. Refusing to act themselves, they push this onto a minor family. Such indecisiveness—it's no wonder they were humiliated by the Uchiha twenty years ago. Speaking of which, Mifū-sama should arrive tonight. With an elite Jōnin overseeing matters, we won't even need to fear an Uchiha Jōnin showing up."
The Hyūga Jōnin took another sip of tea, calculating the night's plans.
At that moment, the sudden sound of commotion reached his ears. Looking toward the clan's entrance, he saw flashes of firelight and heard the faint shouts of, "Ninja attack!"
Yamaki Kisekawa and the Hyūga Jōnin exchanged glances, their expressions turning grim. Kisekawa spoke, "You stay here. I'll check it out." With that, he disappeared into the darkness, heading toward the commotion.
---
Approximately five minutes earlier…
At the Yamaki estate's entrance, two shadowy figures perched on a distant tree branch, quietly observing the scene.
"There are two guards at the gate—Genin-level. Thirty steps behind the gate, there's someone hiding behind the rock garden—Chūnin-level. Fifty steps to the left, in the old tree, two more are concealed—also Chūnin-level. Beyond that, I can't see anything. After all, we don't have the Byakugan's observational range," Gen commented, the tomoe of his Sharingan spinning as he relayed his findings. Turning to Madara, he added, "Are you really sure you want to charge in head-on?"
Madara grinned. "At this point, what's the point of strategizing?" He closed his eyes for a moment, and when he reopened them, they gleamed with blood-red brilliance—a single tomoe adorning each Sharingan.
With a burst of power, Madara leapt high into the air, the moonlight casting a silver glow on his figure as if a nightmare had descended upon the mortal realm.
"Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation!"
Before even landing, Madara completed his hand seals, unleashing a massive inferno that engulfed the Yamaki estate's entrance in a sea of flames.
The two Genin guards at the gate barely managed to shout before they were swallowed by the firestorm.
Whoosh!
Three figures immediately darted out from their hiding spots—Chūnin who had been stationed nearby. In unison, they unleashed Wind, Water, and Fire Release techniques toward Madara, shouting, "We're under attack!"
Madara smirked, the tomoe in his eyes spinning faster. He dodged their combined attack with ease, completing another set of hand seals.
"Fire Release: Dragon Flame Song Technique!"
Three fiery dragons roared from his mouth, each targeting one of the Chūnin. In a series of explosions, all three were consumed before they could even complete their next hand seals.
"Damn…"
From his vantage point, Gen took in the scene, nearly biting his tongue. No wonder Madara claimed he could handle a Jōnin alone—this level of dominance was overwhelming. Two A-rank Fire Release techniques back-to-back? Sure, the Uchiha had vast chakra reserves, but this was just excessive. And how many A-rank techniques had he mastered? Did he sneak into the clan shrine dozens of times?
As he grumbled internally, Gen noticed more Yamaki shinobi converging on Madara. Quietly, he slipped away and infiltrated the estate from another direction.
The Yamaki estate was far smaller than the Uchiha compound. Gen's Sharingan scanned his surroundings, identifying and avoiding all nearby shinobi as he moved deeper into the estate.
"Hurry, this way! The clan leader is already heading to the gate. Let's go provide support!" shouted a Chūnin, leading his companion toward the commotion.
Thunk!
A kunai landed in their path.
"A kunai? What the—" one of them muttered, confused, as they halted.
Suddenly, a flash of light streaked through the air. Blood sprayed, and the first shinobi fell, his expression frozen in shock.
Thud!
As the body hit the ground, the second shinobi finally realized what was happening. Fear flashed in his eyes, and just as he opened his mouth to shout, blood-red Sharingan tomoe appeared before him. He felt his consciousness slipping away, and then—darkness.
The remaining Chūnin stood, his face blank under the genjutsu. Gen asked, "Has a white-eyed ninja appeared in your clan recently?"
The Chūnin shook his head mechanically. "No."
Gen frowned. "Why has your clan been gathering so much grain recently?"
"I don't know."
Ugh, what a waste of a genjutsu! Gen thought, irritated. He then asked, "Where is the grain being stored?"
"In the granary at the back of the estate."
Gen's eyes lit up. "Take me there!"
"Yes..."
