My Perfect Apocalyptic Life

Chapter 56 - Don’t Be Afraid, This Is Your Colleague

Having confirmed the employment relationship, Meng Xu was quite pleased and ready to set off.

With an hour left until nightfall, he didn’t want to stay here overnight. The sound of zombies banging on the door was too noisy to sleep through. He preferred to return to his rental apartment, get a good night’s sleep, and head back to the company tomorrow.

“Be careful. If you lag behind and get eaten, I won’t be paying any compensation.”

Meng Xu turned to Zhang Lunping with a serious expression and said, “Since you didn’t sign a contract with me, our employment relationship is merely verbal. There’s no real employment relationship!”

Zhang Lunping: ?

A contract?

Wasn’t I not asking for a salary? You gave such a grand speech that I thought you were a conscientious capitalist. Now you’re talking about a contract?

Zhang Lunping felt a bit perplexed, but quickly collected his thoughts, muttering in his heart to comply without questioning. He nodded repeatedly.

Why worry so much? Just agree first. Had he forgotten that Chairman Meng’s mental state was different from normal?

Seeing that Zhang Lunping had no objections, Meng Xu was somewhat surprised, feeling that Zhang Lunping had an exceptionally clear way of thinking.

Great, an employee with such qualities is exactly what’s needed!

Meng Xu took out his phone, used the offline map to confirm their location, and then mentally calculated the required time.

One hour should be enough.

Even if any unexpected situations arose, it wouldn’t make a big difference.

With that, Meng Xu declared, “Let’s go. Keep an eye out from behind. If you get attacked by zombies, don’t expect me, your chairman, to save you.”

Saying this, Meng Xu headed towards the back of the supermarket.

Zhang Lunping followed closely.

Behind the small store was a yard, without a clear back door but there was a window. Climbing out of the window posed no major issue.

Meng Xu walked confidently ahead.

Zhang Lunping, on the other hand, moved cautiously, clutching a kitchen knife, which made for an amusing sight.

Occasionally, zombie growls and subsequent screams could be heard, indicating that some unfortunate souls had disturbed zombies and were being besieged and killed.

Each time he heard those sounds, Zhang Lunping would shudder in fear.

Meng Xu’s expression, however, remained unchanged. Seeing zombies running under the sunset, he couldn’t help but say to Zhang Lunping, “Look at them, so full of energy! If I could recruit all of them as my employees, my company would surely flourish!”

Meng Xu was filled with emotion.

Despite zombies being cruel, violent, and dull-witted, there was one thing about them that Meng Xu appreciated: their straightforwardness.

Meng Xu would rather have zombies as his employees than deal with scoundrels like the ones they had encountered earlier.

Zhang Lunping dared not speak.

If you can get zombies to obediently work as employees, I’d be willing to work alongside them.

He was deeply concerned about Meng Xu’s mental state. Though Meng Xu claimed to have zombie employees, Zhang Lunping suspected it might be wishful thinking. He now hoped that under Meng Xu’s protection, they could thrive in a new survival base.

Meanwhile, Meng Xu pondered his encounters.

The two survivor groups he had come across—the team led by Kong Weizhen on the second floor of the department store, and the group led by Song Yufan at the rotating hotpot restaurant by the residential area gate—had mixed feelings about him.

Meng Xu wasn’t foolish. The first group acted subserviently due to his strength but were likely unwilling to be his employees at heart.

The second group believed in the existence of safe zones and held an optimistic view of rescue; they genuinely wanted to persevere.

Therefore, Meng Xu didn’t see either group as ideal employees. For now, they could be considered as part of the subsidiary, and he would observe the situation further.

With these thoughts, Meng Xu let out a long sigh.

Being a chairman involved a lot of thinking.

Overworking his brain wasn’t ideal; better to avoid overthinking in the future.

As they continued forward, crossing paths with zombies and survivors, Meng Xu traversed in the dim light and reached the residential complex.

Returning to the company today didn’t seem realistic; better to go back to his apartment for a night’s sleep.

Upon arriving at the complex, Zhang Lunping, who had been tense, finally relaxed a bit, letting out a heavy sigh of relief.

They were finally safe.

Once at the complex, Meng Xu navigated the familiar area, feeling a sense of ease wash over him.

Just then, a zombie appeared in front of him. Seeing Meng Xu and Zhang Lunping, it roared and charged toward them.

Zhang Lunping was startled, but Meng Xu frowned, saying, “Which unit are you from? I thought I already treated all the zombies here to fried chicken cutlets?”

The zombie didn’t respond, instead accelerating toward them.

Seeing this, Meng Xu shook his head, “No more fried chicken cutlets today. I understand you’re anxious, but listen, come back tomorrow.”

“Roar!”

The zombie lunged at them.

Meng Xu couldn’t hold back any longer. He lifted his fire axe, swinging it directly at the zombie, “I planned to let you go, but if you insist on seeking death, so be it!”

With one swing, blood splattered everywhere.

The zombie was silenced.

After the kill, Meng Xu casually said to Zhang Lunping, “You’ll be my witness. I was defending myself.”

Zhang Lunping nodded rapidly, terrified.

Satisfied with Zhang Lunping’s reaction, Meng Xu led him to the basement door and opened it.

Zhang Lunping was curious, unsure why Meng Xu brought him here. But when he peered inside and saw a fierce-looking zombie, he was instantly terrified, and jolted awake!

“Roar!”

The basement zombie, Li Xiang, roared at Zhang Lunping, appearing agitated and seemingly wanting to tear him apart.

Zhang Lunping, frightened by the roar, turned pale and took a step back, almost falling over.

Li Xiang, with his innate menacing aura, was far more terrifying than ordinary zombies.

Seeing Li Xiang’s behavior, Meng Xu was displeased. He kicked Li Xiang and scolded, “What are you doing, Ah Xiang? He’s a colleague!”

After being kicked, Li Xiang remained agitated, the lure of the living human was too strong.

Having dealt with Li Xiang, Meng Xu turned to Zhang Lunping with a smile, “Don’t be afraid, he’s your colleague.”

“His name is Li Xiang. He’s very nice, diligent, and a great zombie guy.”

Zhang Lunping: ?

Colleague?

Zhang Lunping was stunned, never having imagined that Meng Xu’s talk of zombie employees actually referred to real zombies!

Seeing that the zombie, although ferocious, had no intention of attacking with Meng Xu present, Zhang Lunping took a deep breath, mustered his courage, and dared to take a closer look. Staring at the twisted, mangled face, he couldn’t help but tremble, feeling a chill down his spine.

He sensed that this zombie was more powerful than any he had encountered before!

It was as if… it was an elite among zombies!

But why didn’t this zombie attack him or Chairman Meng?

Confused, Zhang Lunping shakily asked, “Chairman Meng… does he eat people?”

Hearing the question, Meng Xu immediately replied, “Well, he probably hasn’t eaten anyone before. Since he turned into a zombie, he’s been with me the whole time. He might have wanted to eat, but never got the chance… I do recall that he might have killed someone before. Ah, young people make mistakes, and I’ve given him a good lecture. You see his face is all mangled now; that’s from me beating him up.”

“Young people make mistakes and should be given a second chance. Look, he’s changed from human to zombie. I think that’s a harsh enough lesson. He probably won’t repeat his mistakes.”

Meng Xu spoke confidently, patting Li Xiang on the shoulder to signify he was a good zombie.

Zhang Lunping: ?

Chairman Meng, is it you who has issues, or is it me?
