Chapter 166: Chapter 166: The Man Who Lifts the Hammer
The Warriors Three of Asgard faced off against the Destroyer armor, which was forged by Odin himself...
Their battle skills, which were usually unstoppable, proved utterly ineffective against this indestructible colossus. Soon, they found themselves in the same sorry state as the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents... scrambling for their lives.
Scorching beams of energy ravaged the town, igniting cars and buildings in their path. Thick smoke billowed into the sky as flames roared. From across the vast reaches of space, Loki, seated on the throne of Asgard, manipulated the Destroyer with his thoughts.
He hadn't initially planned to kill Thor. Even after learning the truth of his Frost Giant heritage, the bond between them (forged over centuries) still held some weight.
But then, Thor's loyal companions had dared to defy his orders. They conspired with Heimdall, the guardian of the Bifrost, to descend to Midgard and bring his reckless brother back.
Loki knew he could never measure up to Thor... not in legitimacy to the throne, nor in the purity of his royal blood. Once Odin awoke from his slumber and the lies unraveled, Loki would be cast down, stripped of his princely status. The thought of such an outcome hardened his resolve.
'The Destroyer must finish this...'
"Forgive me, brother."
Clad in his horned helm and gripping the scepter, Loki's gaze was icy as he watched from the throne...
...
The Warriors Three were sent flying one after another by the Destroyer's relentless assault. Energy gathered within its hollow visor before erupting in a devastating blast. The explosion sent shockwaves rippling through the air, flames and heat rolling outward like an inferno.
From a distance, Thor, who was busy helping evacuate the townsfolk, watched in anguish. Sif had told him the truth: Loki, in his bid for the throne, had turned to murder.
The valiant warrior-woman dodged the Destroyer's attacks, leaping high with her sword poised to strike. She drove the blade into the armor's back with all her might, but to no avail. The Destroyer had no pilot, no weak point to exploit.
Like liquid metal, its torso twisted, the hollow faceplate now locking onto Sif as energy gathered for another blast.
Then...
A streak of golden light descended like a bolt from the heavens, slamming into the Destroyer with a deafening crash. The shockwave hurled Sif backward, her ears ringing as she tumbled through the air.
Thor rushed forward and dragged her to safety. The golden figure now standing between them radiated brilliance, as if a miniature sun had taken form.
The Sentinel...
Though dwarfed by the towering Destroyer, its presence was undeniable. Power rolled off its frame in waves, the air shimmering with heat.
The two armors clashed with earth-shaking force. Every collision sent shockwaves rippling outward, dust and debris swirling like a storm. The Sentinel's fists blazed with golden fire, each strike denting the supposedly indestructible Asgardian construct.
Metal groaned and warped under the relentless assault.
The Destroyer retaliated, unleashing a torrent of searing energy from its visor. The Sentinel crossed its arms, bracing against the beam as it was forced backward, its feet carving deep trenches into the concrete.
...
"If only I could lift Mjolnir…" Thor clenched his fists in frustration.
As the God of Thunder, he had always relied on strength to overcome any obstacle. Now, stripped of his power, he understood the helplessness of the weak.
"Father… do you still refuse to forgive me?"
Standing at the edge of the battlefield, he searched for answers.
...
From his throne, Loki scowled as the battle unfolded. Midgard's defenders were proving more troublesome than expected.
But it didn't matter. Once Thor was dead, along with his meddling friends, Loki would cement his rule. With Laufey's aid, the throne of Asgard would be his, and the Nine Realms would bow before him.
"I will be remembered as the savior of Asgard. For its future… you must die, brother."
Power was intoxicating. None could resist the allure of kingship.
At his command, the Destroyer abruptly shifted targets. Energy surged through its frame as it unleashed its most devastating attack yet, a beam of incinerating heat that vaporized everything in its path, racing straight toward the exiled prince.
Thor's golden hair curled from the blistering heat, the stench of burning filling the air. In moments, Odin's heir would be reduced to ashes.
Loki allowed himself a smirk.
'Once Thor is gone, these Midgardian insects won't stand a chance...'
...
"May your father protect you."
Standing at the bottom of the crater, Sean observed dispassionately.
Thor's fate mattered little to him. The Allfather would never allow his firstborn to perish.
With S.H.I.E.L.D.'s temporary command post now abandoned, and Coulson and his agents busy evacuating the town, Sean strolled in unchallenged. The few remaining personnel seemed oblivious to his presence.
Only Hawkeye, who was monitoring the feeds, sensed something amiss.
Sean reached out and gripped Mjolnir's handle. Golden energy surged through him, causing the ground to crack beneath his feet.
A tremendous force erupted from the hammer's core... Like two colliding stars, their power clashed in a cataclysmic tide.
The makeshift fortress trembled before being torn apart by the shockwaves.
In the depths of Sean's mind, a towering figure materialized... a one-eyed king clad in golden radiance, his gaze piercing the mortal who dared defy divine will...
