Chapter 25: Cake, Lightning, and Comrades
After a quiet night, the morning air of Magnolia felt crisp and refreshing. Erza and I stepped out from the house, the streets already alive with vendors setting up shop and locals passing by with warm greetings.
"I'm hungry," I muttered, rubbing my stomach.
We found a nearby bakery that sold hot buns, sweet bread, and fried rice balls. As I bought us a simple breakfast, I noticed something.
From the corner of my eye, Erza had stopped walking.
She was standing in front of a dessert shop, her eye locked—no, glued—to a beautiful, glittering strawberry cake in the display window.
She stared at it like it held the secrets of the universe.
I smiled and casually walked past her. "Come on."
"Huh?"
She blinked and followed as I stepped inside the dessert shop. The bell above the door jingled, and the sweet scent of cream and fruit filled the air.
"Two strawberry cakes, please."
The moment we sat down, I handed her a plate with the cake on it. "Here."
She stared at me with wide eyes. "Thank you…"
Then she took a bite.
The moment the cake touched her tongue, her expression shifted—like she'd just tasted a divine relic. Her eyes softened, her shoulders dropped, and a blissful smile spread across her face.
'Is she really this serious about sweets?'
She ate it like it was her last meal on earth.
But as she reached the last bite, she hesitated.
Then looked unsatisfied.
I chuckled, picked up my plate, and slid it over to her.
"Here. Take mine."
She stiffened. "No. I'm full."
"You can eat it," I said.
"I already had one," she replied.
"It's my treat," I insisted.
"You don't have to," she said again. "I can buy—"
"I know," I said, cutting her off gently. "But you're going to need money for things like armor repairs, weapon upkeep… that stuff doesn't come cheap. So just eat."
She blinked, surprised.
After all this was true as someone who heavily relay on equipment money will always be an issue
Then lowered her gaze.
"…Thank you."
She ate the second piece more slowly—but with the same joy.

Later, we returned to the Fairy Tail guild. The building stood proud in the morning light, loud chatter already spilling from inside.
Cana sat at one of the center tables, flipping cards between her fingers like a pro. Gray… was shirtless, of course.
'How does he lose shirts this often?'
"Yo," I greeted, waving.
They looked up.
Gray grinned. "Hey. How was the mission?"
"Easy," I said with a shrug. "Boring. No issues."
Their gazes shifted past me to Erza, who stood just behind me, composed and silent.
I turned. "This is—"
"Hello," Erza said, voice a little stiff and loud. "My name is Erza."
There was a slight awkward silence.
My lips twitched. Gray blinked. Cana blinked.
Then Cana smiled. "Hi! I'm Cana."
She walked up to Erza, curious and excited. After all, there weren't many girls their age in the guild.
They began chatting. I couldn't hear everything they said, but I could see Cana pulling a card and showing it to Erza.
I nudged Gray on the arm. "Let them be."
We left them and moved to another table.
"Where's Master Makarov?" I asked.
Gray scratched his head. "Guild Masters' meeting. He won't be back until later today."
'Tch. So no quest approval yet.'
I leaned back in my seat, debating if I should wait or look through the job board for something simple.
Just as I was about to stand—
The guild doors opened.
A tall blonde teen walked in, earphones slung over his head, hands in his pockets. His posture oozed quiet arrogance—but not full of himself. More like someone who didn't know how to fit in things properly.
He glanced around the hall, eyes briefly scanning the crowd.
Then he frowned.
Makarov's usual chair was empty.
He locked eyes with Gray.
"Where's the old man?"
Gray pointed. "Guild meeting."
The teen nodded and walked to an empty table near the window.
I tilted my head.
"Who's that?"
Gray glanced over. "That's Laxus. Makarov's grandson."
'Oh.'
"He's really strong," Gray added. "Uses lightning magic."
'Laxus… I remember him from the canon. Thought he'd be more rude. Guess not yet.'
I stood up and walked over to the table. Laxus was sitting with one leg over the other, arms folded, gazing on the floor.
I pulled out a chair and sat across from him.
"Hey. I'm Lucky."
He looked up at me slowly.
For a moment, we just stared at each other.
Like some weird eye-contact challenge.
Finally, he muttered, "Laxus."
I waited a beat, then asked, "What kind of magic do you use?"
He didn't answer.
'Okay. Not a talker.'
"I'll go first then," I said.
I summoned a low-level Golden Eagle, about half the size of my main summon, its feathers still gleaming with regal gold. It perched beside me calmly.
Then I summoned my Spirit Fox, its silver eyes mesmerizing and tail flicking softly its gaze flicked to Erza and Cana, who had stopped talking briefly to stare at him then the Fox rushed to Erza and Cana table swaying it's tail
Laxus raised an eyebrow.
Then I raised my hand and wrote AIR in glowing Solid Script letters above the table, which created a gentle gust that ruffled the his hair.
Still, his focus returned to the summons.
He raised one hand, and a thin line of lightning crackled around his fingers.
Not to show off.
Just to answer.
"That's cool," I said, genuinely.
He looked at me.
I stood up, assuming the conversation was over.
Then, right before I turned—
He said, "You too."
I smiled, reached out my hand. "Nice to meet you."
He hesitated.
Then shook it.
'So he's not cold. Just doesn't know how to act yet.'
"Wanna go on a mission together sometime?" I asked.
"No," he said flatly.
"Too bad," I said. "I have more than one flying mount."
He paused.
His eyes met mine again—deeper this time.
"…Fine."
'he took the bait.'
I called Erza over. She walked calmly to us, her expression unreadable.
"Erza, this is Laxus. Laxus, Erza."
They both stared at each other.
Neither smiled.
Neither frowned.
Just stiff nods.
'Great. Two introverts.'
"Laxus uses lightning magic," I added.
"I see," Erza said.
"Erza uses Reequip magic," I added.
"ok" Laxus replied.
'Ugh. Icebreaker time.'
"So, how do you guys feel about doing a mission together?" I joked.
Neither of them answered.
I sighed.
'This is going to be a long mission if I don't work on their people skills.'
Just then, the guild doors creaked open again.
Everyone turned.
Standing in the entrance, beard and all, was Master Makarov.
"Alright, brats! I'm back! What did you break while I was gone?!"
"Nothing yet," Gray called out.
"Give it a few minutes!" someone else yelled.
Makarov stomped toward the center of the hall, staff tapping against the floor.
Finally, I smiled.
'Now time to say goodbye to the plot.'
