Chapter 127 - News! Lacey's Surprise!
This time, Lacey returned without encountering any obstructions or questioning because she carried the token Richard had given her. With that token, she could pass through freely.
Upon hearing of her return, Richard paused his work on inscribing runes. He quickly tossed the longbow into his storage space and made his way to the castle’s grand hall.
There, the half-elf Lacey was entering, looking slightly weary from her journey.
Perhaps due to her long travels, Lacey’s face showed visible signs of fatigue. However, upon seeing Richard, all traces of tiredness vanished, replaced by a bright, beaming smile.
“Lord Richard, we meet again,” Lacey said.
Having not seen Richard for over a month, she was especially joyful at their reunion. Even she couldn’t pinpoint exactly why she felt this happiness, or rather, she hadn’t thought about why seeing Richard made her so happy.
Richard smiled back. “Lacey, welcome back.”
“Thank you, Lord Richard,” Lacey replied, her smile still unwavering, as bright as a blooming flower.
“Why are you standing? Sit down,” Richard said.
“Alright,” Lacey responded, taking a seat on the spacious sofa. She felt at ease, without a hint of awkwardness. After spending several days in Richard’s castle previously, she felt as if she had already blended into it. Returning this time, she subconsciously felt like she was coming home.
“Wow, Lacey, you’re back!”
At that moment, the fox girls, having heard the commotion, came down. They were all thrilled to see Lacey. All the fox girls, including Dorothy and the two cat girls, got along quite well with her.
Lacey’s personality was generally perceived as aloof and distant. After all, her powers were aligned with ice, which often gave her a chilly aura, as if a “keep away” sign was visible to strangers. Ordinary people rarely even dared to strike up a conversation with her, and she wouldn’t pay attention to just anyone.
However, she could easily bond with the beast girls and drop her icy demeanor when in Richard’s presence.
Seeing Lacey catching up with the beast girls, Richard didn’t interrupt them. He took a seat near Lacey and casually picked up the latest issue of the newspaper.
Fred’s daughter, Marissa, had made significant progress and had established a formal newspaper office, hiring about twenty staff members responsible for the newspaper’s content. Marissa served as the editor-in-chief.
These employees, both men and women, were all relatively literate. Every day, they would go around gathering news stories. Richard had also equipped the newspaper office with ten simple cameras; anything more complex would have been beyond their abilities. The staff cherished these cameras, using them to capture what they deemed valuable news. However, Marissa would reject most of their submissions.
Marissa was incredibly dedicated to her role, and the current newspaper had reached a level of quality comparable to those Richard remembered from his previous world. Each issue contained eight sheets, totaling 32 pages. Each sheet consisted of four pages, making it much more organized than the initial versions.
The content was varied and extensive. The first page still predominantly featured Richard’s accomplishments and excerpts from his speeches. There were also many sections devoted to teaching literacy, followed by simple and entertaining stories, such as fables from Richard’s previous world like “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and “The Thirsty Crow,” designed to aid with reading.
These stories were fairly simple but captivating to many readers since this world had never seen such tales.
Following these were some amusing tidbits from around the territory, including news and prominent figures of each issue. The number of featured individuals had increased from one to four, each accompanied by a photo. Those four pages had become a mark of honor among the people of the territory, with many dreaming of making it onto them even once.
After that were daily knowledge pieces, such as basic electricity use, and finally, some short and long stories. Of course, due to literacy rates, the newspaper still relied heavily on illustrations. However, as literacy rates were gradually increasing, the proportion of written content was also on the rise.
The newspaper was now extremely popular, with each issue printing around fifty thousand copies. The printing costs had also dropped, making it nearly break even in terms of revenue and expenditure. For now, Richard primarily used the newspaper as a tool for publicity, though it had yet to include advertisements. If the newspaper were to spread throughout the entire kingdom in the future, it might even generate substantial profits from advertising fees.
After Richard read the newspaper for a while, Lacey finally finished catching up with the beast girls.
“By the way, Lacey, did you mention the relocation to your people when you went back this time?” one of the fox girls casually asked.
Richard, hearing the fox girl’s question, also showed a look of interest and turned to Lacey, saying, “Lacey, I’ve heard them mention this matter. I heard that your people were planning to relocate but hadn’t found a suitable location yet. How is the situation now?”
Lacey replied, “When I returned, I did mention it to my people, and I also told them about Lord Richard’s territory. Additionally, I told them that Lord Richard is very kind.”
She paused at this point. Richard didn’t rush her, calmly watching her. Instead, a fox girl asked, “And then? Did they seem interested?”
Lacey said, “Some of them were interested, but not many. Lord Richard, after I described your character, my people have come to respect you to some extent. However, the main issue is that your territory lacks suitable forests. If my people were to live in a city full of humans, they might be somewhat reluctant.”
Richard nodded and said, “I understand.”
He genuinely understood. Even now, the demi-humans lived separately from humans. The demi-humans were easier to accommodate as their needs were minimal, but elves were different. Elves lived much longer than humans, often for several hundred years, and elves that could live for a thousand years were not uncommon. They preferred living in forests, away from human interference.
Elves like Lacey were exceptionally beautiful. If it were another noble, not Richard, who knows what thoughts they might harbor? Elves were also picky eaters, mostly consuming various fruits from trees they cultivated themselves. If it weren’t for the need to relocate, elves would never consider buying food externally.
Upon hearing Richard’s words, Lacey felt a small touch of emotion. His understanding made her feel recognized.
After Richard finished speaking, he continued, “But Lacey, you probably don’t know yet; my territory has expanded again.”
Lacey looked at him curiously and said, “Congratulations, Lord Richard. How far has your territory expanded?”
Richard took out a map and laid it in front of Lacey. “Look, this entire area is now part of my territory.”
When Lacey saw the map, she didn’t immediately understand, but soon she grasped Richard’s meaning. Her stunning face was instantly filled with surprise.
“Lord Richard, has your territory grown this large?” she exclaimed in shock.
Richard nodded.
“Lacey, you might not know, but our lord is no longer just a baron—he’s now a noble count!” a fox girl chimed in.
Lacey was even more surprised. Although she wasn’t human, she was quite familiar with human kingdoms and knew that a count was a genuine high noble, a significant figure even among humans. She hadn’t expected that in the short month she was away, Richard’s territory would not only expand several times but that he would also become a count!
Another fox girl who was close to Lacey said, “Lacey, the lord is now a count with a strong army and absolute autonomy over his territory. If your people are willing to move here, the lord can provide protection, and no one would dare target you!”
“Yes, Lacey, you should try convincing your people again,” another fox girl added.
Lacey had actually been persuaded for a while now; otherwise, she wouldn’t have brought up the idea of relocating her people to Richard’s territory when she went back.
However, she still had some concerns.
She looked at Richard and said, “Lord Richard, congratulations on becoming a count! About my people… Lord Richard, does your territory currently have any suitable forests? If possible, I’d like to take a walk around your land tomorrow to search for a suitable forest. Would that be okay?”
Hearing her words, Richard smiled and said, “I took this matter to heart when you mentioned it. In fact, I’ve already found a forest.”
Lacey’s beautiful eyes gazed at him. “Where? Could you take me there tomorrow to have a look?”
Richard nodded slightly. “Of course, but you don’t have to wait until tomorrow. I can show you now, and then I’ll take you to see it in person tomorrow.”
“Show me now?” Lacey asked, puzzled.
Then she saw Richard pull out a rectangular object.
This rectangular object looked quite interesting because it was decorated with a strange yet amusing image of a duck.
Yes, this was the case that came with the tablet Richard had bought, and he casually left it on.
She watched as Richard flipped the duck case over, and the inside suddenly lit up.
Lacey’s eyes sparkled because she saw a bright scene appear inside.
The tablet’s background was a landscape picture, very beautiful.
“Lord Richard, what is this?” Lacey asked, filled with curiosity.
Her heart was indeed brimming with wonder.
Then she saw Richard’s fingers swipe across the smooth surface of the object. As his fingers moved, something seemed to change on the screen.
Next, she watched as Richard tapped on something.
Then, a new image appeared.
It was a waterfall.
A stunningly beautiful waterfall.
And it looked incredibly real, even more so than a painting.
“Is this a painting?” Lacey asked.
But soon, her bright eyes were once again filled with astonishment.
Because she saw that the “painting”… was actually moving!
In the image, the waterfall was moving away, revealing more scenery.
A forest tinged with shades of green and yellow, flower-covered valleys, waterfalls, and streams everywhere—all bathed in golden sunlight, making it look like a paradise.
Lacey’s gaze was instantly captivated!
