Chapter 26: Chapter 24: The Living Timeline and a Desperate Alliance
Chapter 24: The Living Timeline and a Desperate Alliance
The Waverider emerged from the temporal vortex into a space that defied normal comprehension. It wasn't a time period, nor a galaxy. It was a shimmering, kaleidoscopic void, where strands of time twisted and converged, pulsing with raw, temporal energy. This was the Temporal Nexus Point, the "wound" in the timestream that Gideon had identified. And it was a mess.
Massive energy surges, like temporal lightning, lashed out from the heart of the nexus, feeding the anomalies that were tearing apart history. Spectral images of divergent realities flickered at the edges of their vision – moments of history playing out in countless, conflicting ways. The air itself vibrated with the chaotic hum of a timeline in distress.
"This is… breathtaking," Professor Stein whispered, awe mingling with dread. "And terrifying. Mr. Stiels, your assessment was correct. The timestream is a living entity. And it is in critical condition."
Adam felt it more acutely than anyone. The "whispers" were now a roar, a symphony of temporal agony that threatened to overwhelm his senses. He could feel the timestream reacting to their very presence, to the wound. It was trying to heal, yes, but its attempts were causing more damage, like a fevered body convulsing.
'The Living Timeline. Right. Should have known. The universe isn't just a backdrop; it's a character. And it's having a bad day. A really, really bad day. And we're supposed to be its doctors. Without medical degrees. Or even a basic understanding of temporal anatomy.'
"Gideon, how do we heal this?" Rip asked, his voice strained.
"Theoretically, Captain, a precise infusion of stable temporal energy could promote localized healing," Gideon explained. "However, the sheer scale of the wound requires a conduit of immense power, and sustained effort. Beyond the capabilities of the Waverider alone."
"So, we need more juice," Mick grunted, stating the obvious.
Suddenly, another temporal signature materialized in the nexus: a fleet of Chronos Corps vessels, sleek and menacing, appearing on the edge of the chaotic void. Leading them was Eva Thawne's flagship.
"Chronos Corps!" Rip spat, his hand instinctively going to his Chronos blaster. "They're here to 'correct' it, likely with methods that will exacerbate the problem!"
Adam's mind raced. He had a vague flash, a fleeting image of a desperate, uneasy alliance. A memory of Time Masters who weren't entirely evil, who eventually sided with the Legends. 'There has to be a way to work with them. Or at least, with some of them. Not Eva Thawne. But someone else. Someone who also sees the bigger picture, beyond the fixed timeline dogma.'
"Rip, wait!" Adam yelled, stepping forward. "Don't engage them. Not yet. We need their help."
Rip stared at him. "Mr. Stiels, are you mad? They tried to erase us!"
"I know!" Adam insisted, trying to convey the urgency of his intuition. "But they have the resources. Their ships are powered by more stable temporal tech than ours right now. And I had a flash. There's a way. A desperate alliance. With someone who also sees the danger." He looked at Gideon. "Gideon, scan their fleet! Look for anomalies within their ranks. Any Time Masters who've shown… deviations from protocol. Disgruntled elements. Anyone who might be questioning Thawne's methods."
Gideon, after a moment, reported, "Scans indicate a minor but persistent temporal anomaly signature on Chronos Corps vessel Gamma-7. Its temporal integrity fluctuates, suggesting internal dissent or an individual operating outside standard protocols."
"That's our shot!" Adam declared. "Rip, we need to send a message. Not a threat. A plea for help. To that specific ship."
Rip hesitated, but the sheer scale of the temporal chaos, combined with Adam's conviction, swayed him. "Very well, Mr. Stiels. Gideon, open a highly encrypted, one-time communication channel to Chronos Corps vessel Gamma-7. Broadcast a message: 'The timestream is dying. Your methods are only hastening its demise. We seek an alliance, for the sake of reality itself.'"
A tense silence filled the bridge. They waited. Then, after agonizing moments, a voice, deep and resonant, crackled through the comms. "This is Chronos Captain D'Orazio of Gamma-7. Your message has been received, rogue Legends. Your claims are audacious. An alliance with aberrations is unthinkable."
"But not impossible, Captain D'Orazio!" Adam interjected, stepping up to the comms. "Your timelines are unraveling. Your 'corrections' are making it worse. We're here at the nexus. We can see the damage. You can feel it, can't you? This isn't just a minor anomaly. This is a dying universe."
A pause. Then D'Orazio's voice, tinged with a hint of doubt. "Commander Thawne insists this is a necessary re-stabilization process."
"Thawne's wrong!" Adam pressed. "She's blind to the bigger picture. She's clinging to a rulebook while the library burns down around her! We just defeated Vandal Savage, the biggest anomaly in history! That kind of cosmic shift has consequences! This is the universe reacting! Not something you can just 'correct' with a time weapon! We need to heal it! And we need your stable temporal tech to do it!"
Another, longer pause. Then D'Orazio's voice, a flicker of defiance in it. "My sensors confirm the magnitude of this… instability. And Commander Thawne's recent directives have indeed been… uncompromising. What is your proposal, Legends?"
Rip took over. "We combine our resources. We channel stable temporal energy into the nexus, precisely guided by our understanding of its unique resonance, to promote natural healing. Your fleet has the power. We have the… nuance."
Before D'Orazio could reply, Eva Thawne's furious voice cut through on an open channel. "D'Orazio! What is the meaning of this communication? Cut ties with the aberrations immediately! Prepare to fire upon them!"
"Commander Thawne," D'Orazio replied, his voice firming. "My instruments indicate the Legends' claims have merit. This temporal nexus is not stabilizing. It is collapsing."
"You question my judgment, Captain?" Thawne's voice crackled with menace.
"I question a strategy that leads to the unraveling of reality, Commander," D'Orazio stated, a definitive line drawn. "My ship will align with the Legends. For the sake of the timeline, even our fixed timeline, this is the only logical course."
With a sudden, decisive maneuver, Chronos Corps vessel Gamma-7 broke formation, aligning itself with the Waverider, its temporal cannons turning towards the rest of the Chronos fleet, daring them to attack.
Thawne raged. "TRAITOR! ALL CHRONOS VESSELS, FOCUS FIRE ON THE ABERRATIONS AND GAMMA-7! DO NOT LET THEM HEAL THE NEXUS! IT MUST BE ERASED!"
The Temporal Nexus Point became a chaotic battlefield. Thawne's fleet opened fire, but D'Orazio's ship, surprisingly agile, returned fire, protecting the Waverider. Ray and Firestorm engaged Thawne's forces, while Mick and Sara prepared for potential boarders.
Adam, feeling the raw, chaotic energy of the nexus, knew this was it. He would have to use every ounce of his power, every instinct, to guide this desperate, desperate healing process. He felt the cosmic entity within him stir, responding to the urgency of the timestream's distress.
'This is going to be the biggest gamble of all. Healing a living timeline? With a bunch of rigid time cops and a sarcastic anomaly as the conduit? What could possibly go wrong? Everything. Everything could go wrong. But we have to try. For Snart. For all of history.'
He closed his eyes, focusing, ready to become the ultimate conduit, the ultimate anomaly, the one who could bridge the gap between chaos and order, between a living timeline and its desperate, desperate healing.
