Chapter 4: Elias Grayes
Who is Elias Grayes?
He had asked himself the question multiple times, it hurt his brain the more he tried to dive into the order final memories of Elias. He wanted to know how he was reborn as Elias or what happened to the original owner of the body.
Did he die or did the reincarnation kill him.
Elias' wife CJ had left the house to take her son off to school, from there she would go to her small flower shop. And Elias would...
He had no idea what Elias did?
What bothered him the most was what he discovered when he took his shower in the morning, he almost screamed. The fright he got was more than what he felt when he met the sin broker the night before.
After making sure that he was the only one alone in the house, Elias stepped into the small bedroom and walked over to the window. He looked down to see the alleyway where he had met the sin broker, it was empty except for a little pup that gnawed at a bone next to a tipped over trash can.
He closed the curtains and reached for the buttons of his shirt, one by one he opened them to reveal his bare chest.
"What the fuck, how did I miss this last night?"
His eyes were stricken with bewilderment at the glass case in his chest that help his heart in place, it was in a circle shape. He could not see his heart but he knew it was there... Somewhere.
He reached out his hand and felt the surface of the glass, A flood of memories exploded in his head causing him to stumble backwards and backing into the wall.
In his mind he saw himself in the body of Elias sitting on a bloody table with his clothes ripped off his top half. His body was bloody, before him was an old man who had thick grey beard, eyes like that of a mad man, a rough face, and thick brown teeth that looked like rusted steam pipes.
In the man's hands were a set of surgical tools, he coughed and spat on the ground of what looked like an abandoned automobile shop that reeked of the smell of dead rats.
"Elias boy, I already fixed it in." He said in a crooked voice as he tapped a wrench on Elias' chest creating a spark and a loud clang.
Elias pushed the man back roughly almost tilting him over but he stabilised himself and chuckled. "Will this protect my heart Locar?"
The old man chuckled and said. "Listen now Elias, compared to the kennel shell the rich folks hook themselves in, this is much better. It's going to protect your heart from the fowl polluted air, ain't no toxins killing you again. It's sturdy, but just watch the spine."
Elias looked at the mirror, his face was hard. That was the first time he showed any expression. In the mirror his spine gave a metallic shine, steam hissed out of the joint of it once every few minutes. "What did you do to me you old man?" His voice sounded mad with fury.
The old man did not look threatened by Elias, he leaned back on the work table and smiled showing his dirty grin. "You should be grateful boy, it came with the package. Toxins, ill gasses, it'll all get filtered out. You had a bad back to begin with. You should be thanking me, if you're of no use to the liberation that will set us back by months."
The new Elias thought of the liberation and instantly his head split open, he saw himself get sent flying back a dozen feet by a powerful explosion.
Elias coughed as thick smoke filled his lungs, his spine hissed out steam. He shook off the feeling of shock but that did not silence the ringing in his ears.
Someone jumped out of the smoke and pulled Elias to his feet, it was a beautiful woman who looked in her late thirties. She wore a tattered brown vest with the insignia of a blue bird, her hair was messy and all over the place, it was hard to tell it's true colour because it was smoking.
"Get up soldier, we have to evacuate the hideout." She said in a loud voice as she shook Elias back to life.
Elias could see lifeless bodies around him on the floor, there were also the sounds of gunshots around them. But something more vile caught his gaze. "Commander, what in god's name is that?"
The commander followed his gaze to see what looked like a goop of black ink the size of a house. It move with feet, hundreds of them. Then as a reptile, slithering on the ground but then it hovered over the ground again.
The strange thing morphed in and out of itself like an organism designed without form, it looked chaotic. Whips would lash out of it and snatch people from the ground, Elias and the commander watched in horror as their bodies melted and poured down onto the ground guts and all.
The strange black substance started to make its way to them, it whipped out one of its whip-like tentacles and aimed to capture Elias but the commander jumped in the way guns blazing.
The weapon doing little to no damage evident in the black goop as it stabbed through her chest and cutting Elias on the side.
The cut caused his skin to burn like it had been bathed in magma, still in his troubled state he reached out to his commander and grabbed her as the black goop pulled her away. "Commander, Ratchet." He screamed.
The commander felt her insides melting like steel, the pain unimaginable. She poured all of her willpower into her final words. "Elias, run."
Elias shook his head in denial as he held on to her. "We leave here together or we die together, commander."
Just then her body snapped in half causing him to fall back with her top half, his eyes was horrified when he witnessed the sight.
The commander could tell her time was drawing near, he called out to him one last time. "You were always an asshole Elias, you have a wife and a children. Man up and fucking run."
Elias broke into tears.
"No, you are the one I've always loved."
The commander breathed out the words with her last breath. "Run you asshole."
