Chapter 145: Chapter 145: Ashes of Ifrit
The air around her shifted suddenly... A strange heat began to rise—unseen, but palpable.
As if a faint simmering had erupted from the depths of her body.
"Shizu-san?" Elyun whispered, noticing the tension tightening across her companion's face.
But Shizu didn't answer.
Instead, she trembled… from fear, from an invisible inner struggle.
Her breaths grew heavier, and the light in her eyes dimmed, replaced by a terrifying fiery hue.
And then—
Boom!!
A dark crimson flame exploded around Shizu, hurling Elyun backward and drawing every gaze to her in an instant.
"She's burning!" Tabane screamed, stumbling back. "Or rather… something's trying to break out!"
Akira narrowed his eyes, his pupils flaring with instant analysis.
"No… This isn't just an energy surge. This is... an entity. Someone's trying to take control."
"At last..."
The voice came from Shizu—but it wasn't hers.
Deeper… rougher… laced with hatred bottled up for decades.
Ifrit's voice.
The flames shifted from red to scorching orange, coiling around Shizu's body like a demonic cloak feeding on her will.
"Fall back, all of you!" Kaval roared—but before he could finish, a heatwave blasted him away.
"What in the—" Rimuru froze momentarily. "Great Sage, do you know what this is...?"
< This is Ifrit, a Greater Elemental and ruler of flames. >
Before Rimuru could even finish asking, Great Sage had answered.
Pillars of fire erupted from the ground, and Shizu's eyes became twin embers of molten fury.
"You... are mere shadows walking upon this world."
Ifrit's voice resonated not in ears, but inside their minds.
"And I? I will burn it all... this world, this body, and every fool who dared bind me."
Akira stepped forward, black flames licking up from his palm.
"I was wondering when you'd show up. I thought you'd hide forever, Ifrit."
Shizu—no, Ifrit within her—paused, staring at Akira with a flicker of confusion.
"Who… are you? This aura… neither human nor demon."
"Correct." Akira's smile was ice. "Because I am nothing you can burn."**
Kurumi stepped up, loading one of her time-round pistols.
"If we lose control, we'll have to eliminate it. Even if it's inside a girl."
But Yukihime raised a hand to stop her, her eyes locked on Akira.
"Leave it to him... It seems he doesn't want our interference."**
Ifrit howled, and a ring of fire detonated around him before he lunged at Akira with devastating force.
Yet before the flames could touch him—
"Disappear."
Akira's voice cut like a blade—and in the next instant, the flames around Shizu's body vanished.
"No matter how strong you are, these flames are nothing compared to Velgrynd's."**
He raised his hand, fingers curling as if crushing an invisible force. The fire recoiled, peeling away from Shizu's body strand by strand—as if her flesh itself now rejected the unwelcome guest.
But Ifrit screamed, clinging tighter.
"I won't leave!! This body… is MINE!"
Behind Shizu, a shadow of flames took shape—a fiery demon wreathed in tongues of fire, eyes blazing with malice.
"If you won't leave… I'll tear you out from within."**
Akira's eyes darkened into violet abysses.
Then he whispered:
"Come forth—Eleventh Familiar: Sadalmelik-Albus."
In an instant, Sadalmelik-Albus materialized behind Akira—a fusion of undine and serpent, a being that manipulated phenomena themselves.
Ifrit's shriek shook the air as he burned from within, until Shizu's body convulsed like a dying thing—
"Shizu-san!!" Elyun lunged forward, but Tabane yanked her back with uncharacteristic grimness.
"Don't. If this isn't stopped now, nothing will remain of her!"**
Sadalmelik-Albus coiled around Akira, its aura smothering the fire not with opposing heat, but as if erasing its very existence.
"Sadalmelik… keep him contained." Akira's voice was steel. He raised his right hand, where dark energy coalesced—a swirling violet-grey abyss, like another dimension taking form.
"I've changed my mind. I won't expel you… I'll erase you. And forge a new, obedient consciousness to inhabit this body."**
Ifrit retaliated with a firestorm, chains of flame wrapping around Shizu to anchor his soul.
"I'll make her BURN! With me! FOREVER!"
But Akira's energy struck—not with heat, but annihilation. As though a higher law had been imposed.
"Vanish."
Akira's calm voice rang out, his eyes flashing—and the chains disintegrated. Shizu's body went limp as Ifrit's consciousness was obliterated in a single glance.
"Athena, craft a new obedient ego."
Athena's voice echoed in Akira's mind, cold and precise:
< Artificial ego synthesis initiated. Compatibility with host [Shizu] confirmed. >
Behind him, a glowing magic circle unfolded—arcane sigils rotating around a core of silver light. A thread of dark violet energy pierced Shizu's chest, and the world itself seemed to hold its breath.
< Analyzing residual consciousness… Extracting core memories… Reconstructing emotional nucleus… >
Shizu's body trembled as the flames receded, draining away like a soul being remade.
Then—
Silence.
The fire died. The magic circles faded. Shizu collapsed to her knees, gasping.
Elyun rushed to her, cradling her gently.
"Shizu-san…? Can you hear me?"**
Shizu's eyelids fluttered open—but her gaze was different.
Calm. Free of pain. No rage. No struggle.
"I'm… here." Her voice was softer now, warmer than before.
< Ego synthesis complete. Designation: [Ignis]. Prior memories filtered—Ifrit's corruption purged. >
Akira turned away from the scorched battlefield, his back to them all.
"Good. We've no need for ghosts of the past."**
Shizu knelt, tears streaking her ash-smudged face.
"I… almost killed you all."**
Akira glanced down at her, his expression unreadable.
"But you didn't. And that's what matters."**
