Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Beachside Shenanigans
The evening had settled into a comfortable rhythm at the Makunouchi household. Alex and Ippo were halfway through their meal when the phone rang. Ippo excused himself and went to pick it up.
"Hello?" Ippo said, his polite tone unchanged.
"Yo, Makunouchi! It's me, Takamura!" came the loud and unmistakable voice from the other end. "We're hitting the beach tomorrow—me, Aoki, and Kimura. You and your cousin better come too! It'll be fun! You guys can relax for once instead of punching bags all day."
Ippo blinked, unsure how to respond. "Uh... let me check with Alex."
When Ippo relayed the invitation, Alex smirked. "Why not? We've been training hard; a break won't hurt. Besides, I wanna see what kind of chaos those three bring."
The next morning, Alex and Ippo found themselves at the beach, each carrying a mountain of baggage while Takamura, Aoki, and Kimura were already causing a scene.
The trio stood near the water, their eyes darting to every attractive girl passing by, their expressions morphing into cartoonishly exaggerated grins.
"Hey, hey, look at her!" Takamura whispered loudly, nudging Aoki.
"Whoa, now that's what I call a beach day!" Kimura added, nearly drooling.
Meanwhile, Alex and Ippo struggled to carry the bags. "They invited us, and we're the ones doing all the heavy lifting?" Alex muttered, rolling his eyes.
Ippo chuckled nervously. "Well, it's Takamura-senpai. What did you expect?"
Inside the locker room, Aoki and Kimura were engaged in a heated debate while changing into their beach attire.
"Listen, I'm telling you," Aoki said, wagging a finger, "if Ippo comes out wearing a bikini-style brief, it's over. The dude's too innocent to realize his... uh... stuff will be on display!"
Kimura grimaced. "Ugh, don't put that image in my head, man. What if it, you know... jiggles or something? We'll all die of secondhand embarrassment!"
As if on cue, Ippo stepped out of the changing room wearing a simple pair of shorts. Both Aoki and Kimura froze, then sighed in exaggerated relief.
"Phew!" Kimura wiped imaginary sweat from his brow. "For a second there, I thought we'd have to teach him basic decency."
Aoki laughed. "Good call, Ippo! No one wants to see your Johnson taking center stage!"
Ippo blushed furiously. "W-What are you two even talking about?!"
Alex walked out next, wearing black board shorts, and shook his head. "You two seriously spent all that time arguing about Ippo's shorts? Unbelievable."
After settling on a spot, the group set up their beach towels, umbrella, and cooler. As everyone relaxed, the conversation drifted to the kind of girls they liked.
"I'll go first," Takamura declared confidently, scanning the beach. He pointed at a tall, curvy woman with long, flowing hair. "Now that is what I'm talking about! She's got it all—figure, face, confidence!"
Kimura nodded approvingly. "Not bad, not bad. My turn!" He gestured toward a sporty-looking girl playing volleyball. "Look at her—athletic and fun. She could keep up with me!"
All eyes turned to Aoki. Grinning
mischievously, Aoki pointed at a woman nearby. She was short, with wild hair and a loud laugh that turned heads—but not for the reasons one might expect.
The group stared in silence.
"...That's your type?" Kimura asked, his voice full of disbelief.
"Hey, don't knock it!" Aoki defended. "She's got personality! And that laugh? It's... uh... unique!"
Takamura and Alex burst into laughter, while Ippo tried his best to hold back his own chuckles.
"I should've known," Alex said, still laughing. "Aoki, you never fail to surprise me."
"Personality, huh?" Takamura teased, slapping Aoki on the back. "If that's what you're going for, you're set for life, buddy!"
The group's banter continued, drawing attention from nearby beachgoers who couldn't help but smile at their antics. The day was shaping up to be an unforgettable mix of relaxation, embarrassment, and endless laughterAs the group finished their banter, Takamura stretched his arms dramatically. "Alright, boys, time to show this beach what real athletes look like!"
Kimura and Aoki immediately perked up. "Yeah, let's hit the sand! Volleyball, maybe a swim, and then... who knows?" Kimura said with a grin.
"Definitely volleyball!" Aoki chimed in. "I'll show off my killer spikes and impress the ladies. Just you watch!"
Ippo, feeling the excitement, turned to Alex. "Shall we join them?"
Before Alex could reply, Takamura raised a hand, stopping them in their tracks. "Whoa, whoa, hold it right there, you two." He smirked, pointing to the pile of bags they had lugged to the beach earlier. "You're on luggage duty."
"What?!" Alex raised an eyebrow.
"That's right!" Aoki added with a mischievous grin. "You guys don't understand the delicate art of beach leisure like we do. Someone's gotta guard the stuff, and who better than the 'rookie duo'?"
Kimura nodded sagely, trying (and failing) to look serious. "It's a sacred responsibility. We trust you two to protect our towels, snacks, and... uh... whatever else is in there."
Ippo looked genuinely distressed. "But... but I wanted to play too!"
Alex crossed his arms, an amused smirk on his face. "You're joking, right? Why don't you guys take turns guarding the stuff?"
"Turn-taking?" Takamura feigned shock, clutching his chest. "Do we look like amateurs? Real pros—"
"—play hard or not at all!" Aoki finished, striking a dramatic pose.
The three of them burst out laughing, already heading toward the volleyball court without another word.
Alex sighed, shaking his head. "Unbelievable."
"Should we...?" Ippo trailed off, glancing at the bags.
Alex shrugged, sitting down on a towel. "Might as well. Knowing those three, they'll be back in no time, probably chasing after the wrong kind of attention."
Ippo plopped down beside him, though he couldn't help but glance wistfully at the volleyball net.
Meanwhile, Takamura, Aoki, and Kimura were already making a spectacle of themselves on the court, challenging strangers to games and drawing laughter—not always the kind they wanted. From their spot, Alex and Ippo could hear occasional cheers and loud arguments, causing Alex to smirk.
"See? Entertainment and baggage duty. Not a bad deal," Alex said, leaning back with a chuckle.
Ippo finally smiled. "I guess you're right."
The two settled in, watching the chaos unfold on the court as the day continued, full of laughs and unforgettable antics.
