"Let's move on to the other quirk analysis."
This was where things got tricky.
It had been ten minutes since my last demo, and my so-called "break" was over. Not that I needed it — but hey, who says no to dramatic pauses?
Apparently, the physical assessment was complete, and Doctor Tanaka was still high on whatever intellectual stimulant her brain secreted when it discovered something new. At this point, I was starting to worry she'd put me in a test tube if I blinked wrong.
I cautiously stepped back, keeping my eyes on her in case she pulled out a scalpel. She was giving real Hange Zoe from AOT energy now — eyes gleaming, smile just a bit too wide. I was one laugh away from calling security on her and myself.
Moving On.
They wanted me to demonstrate the black rods, which was fine, but they also wanted to understand the mechanics behind them. How did I create them? What were they made of? How did I control their trajectory?
"I think about making them, and they appear," I said, manifesting a single rod in my hand. "They're solid, but I have no idea what they're made of. And I don't really control their trajectory once I throw them—they can be dodged, so it really all depends on my aim and the speed of the target."
Dr. Tanaka pulled out a scanner and did her work. "Dense material... minimal radiation output... but definitely registering some kind of energy-suppression field." She frowned, then perked up like a bloodhound catching a scent. "Have you ever considered applying for a patent?"
I blinked.
Why would I need a patent for something only I could create?
"I think you need to know how something works before patenting it," I said. "Also, not really my thing. I'm more of a field test and hope-for-the-best kind of guy."
"Can you create multiple rods simultaneously?"
"I don't think so. It's more like... I have a daily limit. Five or six, maybe seven rods."
"Interesting. What about the immobilization effect? I read the reports of your takedown of a Sludge Villain yesterday."
"Well,"
I scratched the back of my neck, a gesture that made my mother smile from where she sat observing.
"It shuts down physical body movement as well as Quirk usage, I guess. Just think of it like a shutdown button. Whatever it hits just stops working."
I explained clearly.
My revelation of Quirk Extinguishment wasn't just for show.
The truth remained that the power would be exposed whether I revealed it or not once proper testing began. So it didn't matter.
Soon, the ability, while important would become optional once my other powers kicked in.
"Define 'stops working.'"
"Well, when I hit the sludge villain with one, he couldn't move or use his quirk anymore. Completely paralyzed until I removed it. "
Dr. Tanaka and Agent Yoshida exchanged glances.
"We'll need to test this properly," Dr. Tanaka said, her excitement barely contained. "Agent Yoshida, can we get one of our volunteers with a physical enhancement quirk?"
Twenty minutes later, they'd brought in a Hero Commission employee named Yamamoto whose quirk allowed him to harden his skin like iron. He'd volunteered after they explained the test would be brief and supervised.
"Just to be clear," Yamamoto said nervously, "this won't cause permanent damage, right?"
"According to Rei's account, the effects are temporary once the rod is removed," Dr. Tanaka assured him. "We'll monitor you throughout and remove it immediately if there are any concerning symptoms."
I created a fresh rod, holding it carefully. "Where should I...?"
"His arm," Dr. Tanaka instructed. "Just penetrate the skin slightly. We don't need a deep wound."
I pressed the tip of the rod against Yamamoto's hardened forearm. The black material slid through his steel-like skin as if it were paper, embedding about an inch deep.
The effect was immediate and dramatic.
Yamamoto's hardened skin flickered and disappeared. His eyes widened in shock as his body went rigid, muscles seizing up completely. He remained standing, but it was clear he had no control over his movements.
"Fascinating," Dr. Tanaka whispered, checking her scanner. "His quirk factor just... shut off. Completely. I'm reading zero enhancement activity."
"How do you feel, Yamamoto?" Agent Yoshida asked.
"Can't... move," he managed through gritted teeth. "Everything's numb. Like my entire nervous system just went offline."
I quickly pulled the rod out. Within seconds, Yamamoto gasped and stumbled, his quirk flickering back to life as his skin began to harden again.
"That was..." he shook his head, flexing his fingers experimentally. "I've never felt anything like that. It wasn't just the quirk suppression. My entire body just... stopped responding."
Dr. Tanaka was frantically taking notes. "Quirk nullification on contact, complete nervous system disruption, muscle paralysis. Lingering effects of the latter even upon removal." She looked up at me with something approaching awe. "Rei, do you understand what this means?"
"That I have a really unfair quirk?"
"Frankly. Yes. On another note, have you heard of Eraserhead?"
"No."
Of course I knew Eraserhead. However that was the Transmigrator me. The current me had been on the streets for Three weeks, and Eraserhead wasn't a publicly known hero.
"He's an underground Pro Hero, and his quirk is somewhat similar to yours. He can erase the quirk of anyone he looks at."
"Oh ... I can see the similarities."
"Yes, but you're missing the point. This isn't just quirk suppression like Eraserhead's," Agent Yoshida said slowly. "This is complete system shutdown. Once someone is hit, they can't fight back, can't run, can't even defend themselves."
The implications hung in the air like a storm cloud.
"Let's continue."
Agent Yoshida a distance away, called to carry on. Her facial expressions unchanged.
"Alright then. Tell us just how much you know about your power."
"Anything they hit stops moving. For as long as they're embedded."
"Anything?"
I thought about it.
"Mostly living things. Doesn't matter what shape of form as long as it's physical I guess. I assume there are limits, but I haven't found them yet. This is why I tested it on the sludge monster."
"This is incredibly powerful," Dr. Tanaka muttered, making more notes. "Quirk suppression and Paralysis on contact. "It's like a less polite, more aggressive version of Eraserhead's quirk."
"Is that... bad?"
"Not bad, just unusual. Your quirk seems to operate on principles that don't align with our current understanding of how quirks work. Most quirks have clear limitations—energy requirements, physical strain, cooldown periods. Yours seem to be limited only by arbitrary daily use restrictions."
It wasn't daily restrictions.
I could literally make as many as my physical strength would allow me. Meaning even if I was juiced out, as long as I could find someone with a quirk that could recover the stamina of others quickly or instantly, I could create as many as I ... Well, their quirk could allow me.
Not to mention, My quirks, weren't quirks. But I wasn't going to explain that.
I thought we would move on, but strangely, Doctor Tanaka didn't move. Instead thinking over and over as if mulling something.
Her eyes would light up, then dim back to normal pensively in a constant loop. Before I could ask, she quickly walked to agent Yoshida and began whispering something.
Under My gaze, agent Yoshida's face quickly began a similar format, stunning me a bit.
'Weird. Should I eavesdrop?'
I was considering unlocking My hearing when they both walked over to me. Dr. Tanaka exchanged another meaningful look with Agent Yoshida. "Ken. Would it be possible... for us to keep one of your test rods? For scientific study, of course."
I glanced at the black rod sitting peacefully on the metal table, looking innocent as hell.
"Why?" I asked flatly.
Agent Yoshida stepped forward. "Well... quirks like Eraserhead's are hard to analyze. We can't exactly cut him open and put his eyes under a microscope."
"At least not legally," I muttered under my breath.
Tanaka pretended not to hear that. "But your rods recreate the effect in a physical object. That's revolutionary. If we could study the suppression field, maybe we could reverse engineer a version of it."
I raised an eyebrow, suddenly understanding where the Patent thing was coming from.
"You mean for capturing villains?"
"Exactly. Right now, hero's rely on physical restraints, specialized equipment, or quirks like Eraserhead's to subdue villains. But only one exists for the last. Your rods could provide a more universal solution. If it works the way we think, you could make riot gear that shuts down quirks on contact, or create cells where no quirk can activate within range."
I lowered my head for a few seconds, seemingly in deep thought. The silence stretched with my silence.
I looked between the two of them. Eventually, I shrugged. "Sure. Knock yourselves out."
"Splendid. Alright then, let's get to the barrier effect."
This was the demonstration I'd been dreading. For the entire evaluation, I had deactivated Infinity to go through the necessary assessments. Honestly, I would have preferred to hide this. Infinity was quite possible the strongest ability among everything I had chosen in the Transmigration ad.
As a result, My mind always told me it was always supposed to be a secret Trump card not to be known to anyone but me. But let's be real, for my own daily safety, that wasn't gonna happen.
The Neutral Limitless was literally meant to be always on, protecting the safety of its user. This was what made Satoru Gojo OP, but even he couldn't keep Infinity active 24/7 until he learned Reversed Cursed Technique.
I on the other hand, didn't have Reverse Cursed Technique, neither did I have cursed energy. Luckily, I did have a superhuman body and regenerative Factor, but apparently, that wasn't enough to keep it active like Gojo did.
I could only initially keep I active some time over ten minutes before super physique kicked in. If I didn't expend it to create black rods, just based on my body's natural regeneration, I could probably keep infinity active for a few hours continuously before my strength dipped below the required level.
I made a mental note to confirm how long in the future. .... I've strayed again, haven't I?
Like I was saying, it wasn't always active but once used, infinity was a little hard not to notice. Plus, it was cool and I had no intention of hiding so ...
I activated Infinity, letting the invisible barrier settle around me like a second skin.
"Try to touch me," I said.
Dr. Tanaka reached out, and her hand stopped several inches away from my shoulder. She frowned, pressing harder, but couldn't make contact.
"How?" she asked, genuine confusion in her voice.
"I don't know. I just... decide that things can't touch me, and they can't."
"Can you turn it off?"
"Yeah." I deactivated Infinity, and her hand immediately made contact with my shoulder. "It's like a switch I can flip on and off."
"And you can choose what gets through?"
"To some extent." I reactivated the barrier. "It's not always perfect, but it's getting better with practice." I said, deliberately vague.
She ran me through a series of tests—water, air pressure, temperature changes, electromagnetic fields. Infinity blocked everything.
My current whitelist and blacklist already covered 90% of all possible attacks I could face. The remaining 10% were the attacks I simply hadn't thought of yet or attacks Infinity couldn't block yet. Both ones I was sure of and ones that were still my cautious hypothesis.
"This is unprecedented," Dr. Tanaka said, her voice filled with scientific excitement. "You're essentially creating a selective barrier that operates in unfathomable ways. Do you understand the implications of this?"
"Not really."
"It's like you're surrounded by an invisible force field, but there are no energy readings of any kind."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Most barrier quirks show clear energy signatures - electromagnetic fields, hardened air, telekinetic barriers. Yours shows... nothing. It's like the space around you simply refuses to allow intrusion."
She ran more tests, measuring the exact distance of my barrier, testing whether different materials could penetrate it, checking if it extended below my feet or above my head. The results were consistent - nothing could touch me unless I allowed it, and the effect extended in a perfect sphere around my body.
"You're effectively untouchable when this barrier is active. Physical attacks, environmental hazards, even some forms of energy attacks would be completely negated. This is the kind of defensive capability we see maybe once in a generation. No, I've never seen this kind of defensive ability at all. I can say with all this, that you're looking at a very high classification rating."
Dr. Tanaka was taking notes furiously. "What's the energy cost? How long can you maintain it?"
"I don't really know. I've never experimented."
There weren't much tests after that. Soon, agent Yoshida sat down with us to discuss the results.
"Rei, your quirk classification is going to be quite complex," she began. "We're looking at what appears to be a composite ability with at least three distinct components: extreme physical enhancement, a selective nigh impenetrable ... Better yet, spatial barrier, and a Quirk erasure function."
"What does that mean practically?" my mother asked.
"It means Rei has one of the most powerful and versatile quirks we've seen in recent years," Agent Yoshida said. "His physical capabilities alone put him in the top tier of enhancement-type quirks. The barrier ability is essentially perfect defense, and the Immobilization component makes him uniquely suited for subduing villains. The last part alone already makes him a valuable asset to both the Hero Commission and any Pro Hero Agency that will learn of his abilities."
Agent Yoshida made final notes on her tablet. "We'll need to process all this data and determine your official classification. For now, you'll be registered as Class A Enhanced Individual with Special Monitoring designation."
"What does that mean?" I asked.
"It means you're powerful enough to be potentially dangerous. The special monitoring just means we'll check in with you periodically to ensure you're adapting well and not experiencing any negative effects from your abilities. Threat level has been marked as 'Significant' with a note that you pose no current danger to public safety."
"Significant?"
"It means you have the potential to cause significant damage if you chose to, but we have no reason to believe you would. It's actually a compliment, in a way—it means we take your abilities seriously."
My mother squeezed my hand. "What happens now?"
"Now, Ken is officially registered as a quirk user, which means he can legally use his abilities for self-defense and, eventually, hero work. We'll be sending a recommendation to U.A. High School that they give his application serious consideration."
"A recommendation?"
"Based on today's assessment, you've demonstrated the physical capabilities and tactical awareness of a pro hero. That's... Not unusual for someone your age." Agent Yoshida smiled.
At first, I thought she had that wrong. Then I thought it over and realized why.
My age.
I was friggin 17 For crying out loud. Meanwhile, the vast Majority of the First Year students in U.A were 15. Most 16. I was a full year older and quite possibly, could be 18 when the U.A exams came. Most people would have gotten their licenses at that age.
Hold on.
When was the birthday of my alternate self in this reality?
I regained focus in time to hear the last few words. "I think you're going to do very well at U.A. when you get in."
"Um ... Thanks. When will I get my official quirk registration?"
"Within a week. We'll mail it to your home address." She stood and shook hands with both of us. "Rei, I want you to know that you're welcome to contact me anytime if you have questions or concerns. What you've been through is extraordinary, and we want to support you however we can."
As we left the building, my mother was practically glowing with pride. "You were amazing in there. So calm and confident. I'm so proud of you," my mother continued as we walked back to the car. "Not just for how you handled the tests, but for everything. For surviving whatever happened to you, for wanting to become a hero, for being so strong."
Strong. If only she knew how lost I actually felt.
Deciding not to think about it. I found myself thinking about the rod Dr. Tanaka had taken. Something about the way she'd looked at it, the excitement in her voice when she talked about its applications...
I had a feeling that little pencil-sized rod was going to change more than just my own future ....
'Hahaha!'
That's what you are probably expecting me to say right?
Please. As a Transmigrator, how could I not understand that the reason they wanted the rod was for more than simply developing restraints for villains? Null rod was basically Aizawa's quirk on steroids. It was understandable that they wanted to dissect everything they could learn from my abilities in an attempt to counter them should I ever turn to the The Dark Side.
So why did I give them the rod anyway?
One, it showed ... Or at least implied I had nothing to hide. Two, if they could seriously reverse engineer something that was made from powers granted by a Transmigration ad and fueled by my own physical stamina, then I would strip naked and sing Hakuna Matata on Live Television.
My powers weren't quirks, and the fact that null Rods were powered by my stamina effectively meant replicating it was impossible. Of course, the energy in the rod wouldn't last long.
It was physical stamina after all. Once it ran out, then all they would have was a regular black rod.
Shucks for them.
"Rei?" my mother said as we got in the car. "You're quiet again. Everything alright?"
"Just thinking about what Dr. Tanaka said. About the rods being useful for heroes."
"That's wonderful, isn't it? You could help heroes all over Japan, maybe all over the world."
"Yeah," I said nonchalantly. "It's a lot to think about."
