Chapter 39: Chapter 19.1: Bonds and Burdens
The dorm room was quieter than usual.
Fu Yunrui's visit had left behind an odd aftertaste—something between amusement and unease. While his cheerful demeanor lightened the atmosphere, it had also stirred emotions Shi Mo wasn't prepared for.
Loneliness.
Envy.
Longing.
She had no family like that. No one who could show up unannounced and fill a room with warmth. No one to bring dumplings just to check in.
And perhaps most frustrating of all… she wasn't even supposed to feel this way.
She had a mission.
And emotions weren't part of the plan.
On Monday morning, Shi Mo woke to the sound of the alarm clock buzzing aggressively.
She groaned and rolled over.
Zhou Zhi had returned from his weekend trip and was now sprawled across his bed in full sloth mode, still snoring.
"Get up," Shi Mo muttered, tossing a pillow at his face.
Zhou Zhi grunted. "One more minute…"
"You've been saying that for ten minutes."
Fu Yunshen stood already dressed, brushing his teeth at the sink. His neat appearance and efficient routine contrasted sharply with Zhou Zhi's entropy.
Shi Mo dragged herself out of bed, muttering, "I didn't sign up for parenthood."
Fu Yunshen glanced at her through the mirror. "Welcome to hell."
After getting Zhou Zhi vertical and mildly functional, the three of them left the dorm together. It had become a routine of sorts.
Strange.
But comforting.
Shi Mo didn't miss the way other students looked at their trio—some curious, others judgmental. A few girls whispered as they passed.
"Isn't that Fu Yunshen?"
"Who's the new guy with him?"
"I thought he didn't talk to anyone…"
Shi Mo ignored them.
This life wasn't about being noticed.
It was about staying alive.
And staying close to her target.
Back in class, Shi Mo found herself staring at the chalkboard without absorbing a word of the lesson.
Instead, her mind drifted.
To the ghost in 304.
To Fu Yunshen's stepmother.
To the Gu worm that had grown more quiet—and more dangerous—with each passing day.
"You need to feed me soon," it whispered."Or I'll feed on you."
Shi Mo pressed her fingers to her temple. "Not now."
The system chimed softly.

She sighed.
Being close to Fu Yunshen helped suppress the Gu's hunger, but it wasn't enough. She needed to level up—deepen the bond—or risk a flare.
And soon.
