Chapter 2: Goodbye Mom, I’m Setting Sail Tonight
“Subspace, I think I remember how to open it like this, right?”
Following Aierjisi’s instructions, Yake tried to activate his own subspace. Normally, such techniques should only be used by intermediate mages, but thanks to the contract he signed with the Little Princess, as her servant, he could also use the power of the contract to access his subspace. This was one of the few perks of signing that contract. However, at first, Yake couldn’t skillfully open subspace; after several attempts and teachings from Aierjisi, he finally grasped how to open it.
With a gesture, a small wormhole appeared before him.
“Oh, it’s much easier to open subspace once you grasp the trick!”
Delighted, Yake felt proud that he had mastered the technique at last. But just as he was celebrating for about five seconds, he slapped his face to remind himself he was there to pack, not to practice opening subspace!
“Well, if I’m off on an adventure, I have to take these things with me. After all, camping in the wild is bound to happen.”
Packing his father’s old travel gear, Yake tossed everything into the subspace. He also gathered some spare utensils and clothes. His luggage was just about ready. Time to head downstairs and find the Little Princess to set off.
“Princess, this is the little bit of dry rations I prepared for you. If you get hungry on the road, it can serve as emergency food.”
Aisi handed over a large package to Aierjisi.
“Oh. Thank you, Aisi! You’ve done so much for me, I really don’t know how to repay you. Can I open it and see what’s inside?”
Receiving the package, Aierjisi felt around inside. It was definitely going to contain meat, and since it was called dry rations, it was likely jerky. But there might be other things too.
“Of course.”
“Then I’ll open it and take a look!”
With Aisi’s permission, Aierjisi unwrapped the package and peered inside. Sure enough, it was packed with dried meat strips, perfect as dry rations. However, she was slightly disappointed that there were only jerky and no other goodies.
“Well, thank you for your help, Aisi.”
Sealing the bag again, Aierjisi stowed the dry rations into subspace just as Yake came down the stairs.
“Yake, have you finished packing?”
“Yeah. I have everything ready for our journey. We can leave anytime.”
“That’s good. But before we head out, say your goodbyes to your family. This trip might take a while; maybe even two or three years before you come back. If you have anything on your mind, don’t be shy—just say it.”
Aierjisi looked at Yake. This was his last chance to bid farewell to his family.
“Uh. Mom, Xier. I’m heading out this time, and I probably won’t be back for quite a while. The danger is likely greater than any adventure I’ve had before. So, um, I’ll do my best to come back alive. If, by any chance, I die, please make sure to bury my body—ow!”
Before Yake could finish, Aierjisi couldn’t take it anymore and kicked him.
“Hey, are you trying to jinx us? The way you’re talking makes it sound like we’re heading out to die! We haven’t even left yet and you’re already thinking about where to bury yourself!”
Aierjisi was fuming; who says their farewells like that?
“Ah, good point. Let me think… Anyway, this trip will take a while. Mom, Xier, you both take care of yourselves while I’m gone. I’ve left you enough gold coins to last you for quite a while. And Aisi, please take care of my family. If anything happens to them, don’t blame me when I get mad!”
Yake considered his words for a moment; this time, what he said sounded much more pleasant. Now that was a farewell!
“Don’t worry, I will protect your family. That’s a command from Princess.”
“Yake, you and Little Aier too. Keep safe on the journey. Especially with camping; neither of you seems to have any experience in that, right? Don’t let it turn into a mess!”
“Hey bro, just watch your mouth on the way. Don’t offend anyone by talking nonsense!”
Reina and the others also shared some parting words with Yake.
“Hahaha. Alright, I’ll keep your advice in mind. Now, I’m off. Goodbye!”
Yake turned around, leaving his familiar home alongside the Little Princess.
“Um, Yake. Are you familiar with this continent?”
Having walked for a short while, Aierjisi suddenly stopped, asking Yake about his knowledge of the continent. After all, she had been asleep for three hundred years, and the world had changed greatly during that time. If they needed to find other crossers, a map was essential.
“Not really. The situation on this continent is quite complex. Besides the kingdoms built by humans, there are territories occupied by other races. I’ve never left this kingdom.”
Yake hadn’t given Aierjisi the answer she was hoping for. She thought for sure that an adventurer like him would know the world inside out.
“Sigh, do you know where Panimir is?”
Aierjisi intended to go there to find an Ice Dragon named Ailin to see if she was the crossover they were looking for. However, without a map, she had no idea how to get there—not even which direction Panimir was in.
“What? You don’t know either?”
“Well, of course! I was sealed away for a long time! The world has changed a lot; I hadn’t even heard of a country like Panimir before I was sealed!”
“That’s a problem. Wait, let me check if there’s anything my dad left that might be useful.”
Yake rummaged through his subspace for travel essentials. It wasn’t long before he pulled out a world map and an old compass.
“Oh, this map should be useful. And this compass.”
With the map and compass, they should finally have a clear understanding of where they needed to go.
“Oh, as expected of my servant! You really come through at a critical moment. Picking you up was like finding a treasure!”
