Chapter 54 - Worries? I Don't Have Any
Inspection Headquarters cafeteria.
Munch munch.
Psyche, sitting at a corner table, performed the feat of inhaling food.
As a result, her cheeks were puffed out like a hamster’s.
Anyone who sees would think she’s been starving for days..
Loen, sitting across from her with legs crossed, looked at that sight with a disgusted expression.
By the way.
Loen thought as she looked Psyche up and down.
‘On the outside, there doesn’t seem to be any problem.’
Long light blue straight hair, puppy-like eyes, and a bright impression. Her personality is as cheerful as her appearance.
Though she sometimes blurts out nonsense.
“Psyche, do you have any difficulties while working these days?”
“Huh?”
“You can swallow what’s inside and then speak slowly.”
“Oh.”
Gulp.
Psyche, returning her cheeks to normal, answered.
“I don’t think so.”
“Not even during solo dispatch?”
“When I was in the Barrier, hmm.”
Psyche pondered for a very brief moment.
“It was just fun!”
“I see..”
Loen was momentarily at a loss for words. Taking advantage of that moment, Psyche quietly reached out to grab some food.
Loen sighed and quietly gestured for her to continue eating.
Hehe.
Psyche’s cheeks quickly became puffy again as she laughed mindlessly.
Looking at her carefree appearance, Loen once again recalled the contents written in her notebook.
Psyche.
The Last Dragon.
Only two lines were written.
The word in the last line is particularly disturbing.
However, more important than that is the word written at the very top of that page.
Hostile Forces.
In other words, those whose names are written on this page can be seen as entities standing in opposition to the protagonist.
In short, Psyche was a being who would bring serious threats to the empire in the future.
Based on the original story.
‘This is unexpected..’
Even if it was an original character, I only thought it would naturally be the protagonist’s group or someone related to them.
I never expected them to belong to the hostile forces.
An even bigger problem is that even now, trying to recall content related to Psyche, no memories come to mind at all.
It might be natural since 20 years have passed since reincarnation.
“Loen. I’m done eating.”
“Oh? Then shall we get up?”
“Yes!”
Loen, who left the cafeteria, exited the headquarters and headed towards a quiet park.
Psyche carefully followed behind her. Because Loen seemed different from usual.
Even after arriving at the park, Loen was still lost in thought.
‘What could possibly make an Inspection Corps member from a ducal family turn against the empire?’
What could possibly cause someone with a personality that would have no problems as long as they’re fed on time to do such a thing?
No plausible answer came out even after pondering.
There was too little information for that.
Hmm.
Come to think of it, while it’s true that Psyche is bright and cheerful, she’s by no means a purely good person.
If categorized, she’s closer to ‘chaotic neutral’.
Someone who can freely cross between good and evil.
I felt this clearly in the Barrier.
Anyway,
It’s certain that a turning point for change will come to her.
I just don’t know what it is.
If so, there’s only one answer.
I have no choice but to get closer to Psyche.
As I build a friendship and get to know her, I should be able to grasp something.
This was the best option for now.
And even if she was an antagonistic character in the original story, it could be different here.
Since this is a distinct reality, there’s a sufficient possibility that things will flow differently from the original story.
So let’s not get too caught up in the notebook contents.
Just looking at the Barrier, the power structure was overturned because of me.
There’s no reason the same can’t happen with Psyche.
Just then, her voice was heard.
“By the way, why did you suddenly head to the park?”
“Just because.”
“Ah..”
Psyche, who was strolling through the quiet park, glanced at Loen.
You seem to have a lot on your mind today.
‘Could it be because of Senior Ria?’
Senior Ria seemed to be in a bad mood right after losing the duel, surely Loen must be worried about that too.
“Loen! Don’t worry too much. Senior Ria has a simple personality, so she’ll get over it quickly.”
“Huh? Ah, right. Thanks. By the way, I have something to ask.”
Psyche nodded, indicating for her to ask.
“Do you have any worries these days?”
“Worries?”
Worries? Worries… Hmm.
Psyche pondered whether she had any worries.
And the conclusion.
“When will we go on dispatch again?”
“..Is that your worry?”
“Yes! And if possible, I’d prefer somewhere I can run wild like in the Barrier!”
“I’ll consider it.”
Loen made a mental note.
Psyche, no worries.
“How are things with your father?”
“Suddenly my father? Well, with my father, it’s just… so-so.”
“Why?”
Psyche let out a deep sigh. At this rare sigh from Psyche, Loen’s mind sparked.
Could conflict with her father be the catalyst for change?
“He always nags and picks on me..”
“In what way exactly?”
“You know how I have the personality where I must try something if I want to do it? So I did this, that, and the other thing. But every time, my father would say, ‘Can’t you just focus on one thing!’ and scold me.”
“..? Isn’t your father right-”
“No!”
Psyche suddenly started getting upset.
“Shouldn’t a father fully support what his daughter wants to do? But he’s always telling me to stop doing useless things and endlessly nagging!”
“Hmm.”
Loen made another mental note.
Psyche, causing her father grief.
“Your father is Dragon Duke Caladriel, right?”
“Yes.”
“The one ruling the free city of Arteum?”
“Yes. I have a lot to say about that too. I mean, it’s a free city, right? FREE city. But how does it make sense that I can’t do as I please?”
“Calm down first.”
Loen calmed Psyche, who was fuming while venting her complaints about her father.
A moment later, Loen threw the next question at the now calm Psyche.
“By any chance, do you feel any resentment welling up inside towards the world?”
“Not particularly? I’m very satisfied with the Inspection Department work, so I have no complaints at all. I get along well with the team members too. Maybe it’s because everyone’s a bit off their rocker. Anyway, I like it!”
No complaints at all.
Well, even in the Barrier, she was just excited and wagging her tail. How could she have complaints?
Somehow, the more I learned about Psyche, the more questions arose.
No matter how I look at it, she doesn’t seem like someone who would turn against the empire?
“I’ll ask just one last thing.”
“Okay.”
Were you always this curious?
A question suddenly popped up in Psyche’s mind.
But she quickly dismissed it.
She must have suddenly become curious.
“I’m asking this just in case. You’re not a dragon-kin, but a dragon..”
“Huh? How did you know?”
Psyche looked around quickly and then put her hand to her mouth as if telling a great secret.
“Ahem. This is something my father told me to absolutely! absolutely never tell. I’m telling you because you’re really Loen. You understand, right?”
Loen nodded silently.
Psyche pondered one last time.
Is it okay to tell?
Yeah, it’s not like Loen is the type to go around spreading rumors, right?
End of deliberation.
“Actually, I’m not a dragon-kin, but a dragon. A real dragon born from an egg my father created.”
“What!?”
Loen had already guessed this through her notebook, but she still pretended to be surprised.
At this, Psyche got excited and started blurting out secrets.
“But for some reason, my father sealed my powers. That’s why I’m going around pretending to be a dragon-kin.”
“You don’t know the reason?”
“No matter how much I begged and pestered, he absolutely wouldn’t tell me.”
For reference, dragons and dragon-kin are distinctly different beings.
Dragons are literally dragons.
Immortal-like beings living for thousands of years.
The origin of magic who passed on the mystery of magic to humanity.
However, currently, the only dragon remaining is Psyche’s father, Caladriel. Two if you include Psyche.
On the other hand, dragon-kin are hybrids between dragons and other races.
Those who inherited dragon blood, having external features like horns, tails, scales, etc., and possessing robust physiques and outstanding magical talent.
However, they are a half-breed race that can never become dragons.
In public, Psyche is known as Caladriel’s child and a dragon-kin. It’s not strange since a dragon’s child doesn’t necessarily have to be a dragon.
“Anyway, this is a real secret! You understand, right?”
“Yes, trust only me. Now that quite some time has passed, shall we return to headquarters?”
“Yes!”
Loen, judging that she had heard enough, turned her steps towards the Inspection Headquarters.
And as she walked, she thought.
‘Since I’ve become inseparable from Psyche anyway, I have no choice but to keep her close and watch carefully.’
Loen drew this conclusion.
And Arteum, was it?
Psyche’s hometown and the place her father rules.
A free city where various special facilities like magic towers, academies, and religious headquarters are gathered.
She decided on that as the next destination.
She had been thinking of visiting a magic tower at least once, so this was a fortunate coincidence.
“I’m thinking of going to Arteum for the next dispatch, what do you think?”
“Eeeek!?”
“I’m just kidding.”
“Phew.”
I’m sorry, Psyche.
The next dispatch location is Arteum.
Of course, we’re not leaving right away. I need to visit my family home and there’s still Inspection Corps work left.
After finishing her thoughts, Loen headed straight for the office.
“Here’s the detailed report.”
She handed over the report she had finally finished writing to the Team Leader. The Team Leader nodded and said while flipping through the report.
“I plan to review the report with the Department Head and then conduct a post-evaluation. Keep that in mind.”
“Yes.”
Then, raising his head and making eye contact, the Team Leader smiled and said something pleasant.
“Good work. You can go home for today if you’d like.”
“Thank you.”
After work, Loen got in her car and headed straight for her family home.
It was because of her mother’s letter telling her to visit home when she had time. She had been planning to visit home anyway.
Loen arrived at her family home late in the evening.
The butler approached and escorted her.
“Young miss, you’ve arrived. The young master is waiting for you.”
“Johan? For me?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Loen tilted her head at the news that her brother was waiting for her.
Why him, if not mother?
Putting her curiosity aside, Loen headed to the reception room.
And was surprised.
“Sister. How, how did you end up like this?”
“..?”
It was because her brother, whom she was meeting after several months, had a tearful expression while looking at her.
Loen had a puzzled expression at the implicit question loaded with many meanings.
What’s wrong with this kid now?
“I heard from mother. That you… went through many hardships… in the Barrier.”
“Ah.”
Loen broke out in a cold sweat at her brother’s gaze full of meaning that seemed to ask how someone who wasn’t originally like this had changed so much.
No wonder there were such signs from the letter mother sent…
Loen had a strong feeling that the long-awaited family gathering would not go smoothly.
