Chapter 162: Chapter 162: Ancient One's Gratitude and Hell's Turmoil
The moment the Hell projection shattered, the Ancient One, meditating in Kamar-Taj, opened her eyes. Surprise flickered across her face.
"The aura of Hell?"
As the Supreme Sorcerer, no one understood the power of other dimensions better than she did. It was unsettling that, despite her constant monitoring, a visitor from Hell had managed to sneak into their world.
"Mordo," she called softly.
A dark-skinned man in a mage's robe entered, bowing respectfully. "Supreme Sorcerer."
"Notify the Sanctums to prepare their defenses. I will be leaving for a while."
With that, the Ancient One raised her hand, and a shower of sparks opened a portal. Mordo simply nodded, his trust in her absolute, and turned to deliver the message.
The Ancient One stepped through the shimmering gateway, her surroundings shifting in a blur. When the scene reformed, she was standing inside a house.
"You're late."
John's voice met her as she arrived. The Wizard King had been waiting.
"Wizard King."
"Supreme Sorcerer."
They acknowledged each other with a nod. The Ancient One's gaze fell on Ariana, and she felt a familiar, potent magic emanating from the girl. She also realized she was, indeed, too late. The cloying aura of Hell was already dissipating, replaced by the lingering traces of powerful magic.
"It seems I owe you a favor, Wizard King," the Ancient One said with a smile, looking at Ariana. "And this is?"
"My sister, Ariana Wick," John replied, waving a dismissive hand. "We had a deal. This isn't a favor."
Destroying a piece of Hell had been a matter of convenience; saving his sister was the only thing that mattered.
Ariana's gaze, meanwhile, landed on the Ancient One's bald head, her eyes filled with a pure, innocent curiosity. She reached up and unconsciously rubbed her own thick, soft hair, clearly baffled as to why a woman would choose such a hairstyle. The girl who hadn't flinched at flying bullets now seemed to revert to the little sister he remembered, safe at her brother's side.
The Ancient One noticed her gaze and smiled kindly before turning back to John. "Was it very troublesome?"
John glanced down at his torn clothes, a twitch at the corner of his mouth. "A Hell Lord who snuck in and a witch who created a hidden sacrifice for him."
Collusion between internal and external threats has been a difficult tactic to counter since ancient times. It was why otherworldly powers were so keen on cultivating followers. In the vastness of the universe, simply finding a specific planet was a monumental task. Followers provided coordinates, a beacon to create a channel for invasion. With a Level 7 witch providing cover and the power of a Hell Lord as a booster, this incursion had been so covert that even the Ancient One hadn't detected it.
"I miscalculated," she admitted. Hearing it was a Hell Lord, even her expression grew serious. The Hell dimension was powerful, home to formidable beings, each synonymous with mystery and cunning. John had prevented an invasion, saving the world from disaster.
"I should offer my thanks, Wizard King."
The Ancient One was a wise person. The best way to deal with a wise person was to be direct. She would not take John's 'convenience' for granted. A long-term partnership was built on mutual fairness and benefit.
John hadn't expected the Supreme Sorcerer to be so proficient in social graces. Since she insisted on thanking him, to refuse would be ungracious. He rubbed his chin, his gaze settling pointedly on the Eye of Agamotto hanging around her neck.
"Actually, I'm quite curious about the Time Stone."
Yes, it was just curiosity. There was absolutely no intention of siphoning off a bit of its power to create a counterfeit.
"I didn't do anything major," John said humbly, a mischievous glint in his eye that bewildered Ariana. "I just blew up Hell once. If you're unwilling, forget it."
The Ancient One looked down at the Eye of Agamotto. It seemed everyone wanted to borrow it lately. Her gaze, however, subtly shifted back to Ariana.
According to the Banner from that other timeline, the Wizard King had never appeared. Had Ariana, in that reality, become the Hell Lord's vessel? As the one who best understood these dimensions, the Ancient One knew the conditions for a Hell Lord's descent. A pure maiden, coupled with powerful magic—there was no better vessel than Ariana. If John hadn't appeared, if she herself hadn't discovered it, the girl would have been lost. That other timeline was truly a world drowning in peril.
Fortunately, the crisis here had been resolved.
Thinking of this, the Ancient One's smile remained. "The duty of the Supreme Sorcerer is to protect the Eye of Agamotto, but…"
John thought she was about to refuse, but she changed the subject. "I can invite the Wizard King to Kamar-Taj. There, you can research this treasure."
He hadn't expected her to concede so easily. Was the Ancient One really this generous?
"Then thank you very much, Supreme Sorcerer," John smiled brightly. "I will come to visit."
"Kamar-Taj always welcomes the Wizard King," she replied with a mysterious smile of her own. Looking at Ariana, she nodded slightly. "And you are welcome as well, Ariana."
Ariana still didn't speak, but she nodded in acknowledgment.
"I will await your arrival in Kamar-Taj, Wizard King," the Ancient One said, then opened a portal and departed. She had to return and thoroughly check the defensive arrays of the three Sanctums.
John ruffled Ariana's hair, then remembered something. "Where is your Little Bear?"
At his words, Ariana blinked, and a look of panic began to spread across her face. John knew how much she treasured the bear and immediately began to search with her.
Meanwhile, in the ruins of Hell, the demon lord Satannish watched the illusion of the Gate of Matter fade, blood trickling from his wounds. In this dusty, shattered world, a disaster more terrifying than death had arrived. Two-thirds of Hell was now a landscape of eternal, unmelting ice, countless creatures frozen within it. He was the sole survivor.
Suddenly, laughter echoed around him. "Satannish, look at the foolish thing you've done."
Satannish, his true form a monstrous being of curved horns and corded muscle, glared angrily at the newcomer. It was Mephisto, another Hell Lord from another Hell, his form a flash of crimson against the frozen wasteland.
"Mephisto, I will have my revenge!" Satannish roared, his hatred for John burning at its peak. "That damned wizard will be crushed by me! I was just one step away from that sweet, delicious world!"
"Fool!" Mephisto cursed. "You've caused huge losses! Even my Hell was affected. You should be grateful that madman didn't go all out."
The cunning Mephisto clearly knew something. He looked at the resentful Satannish, his eyes filled with calculation. A dignified Hell Lord, forced to this extent by a wizard. It seemed his own plans for that world would need to be re-evaluated.
"Besides that damned Supreme Sorcerer, another formidable fellow has appeared," Mephisto muttered to himself. "It's getting more and more interesting."
Perhaps he would let others test the waters first. He had no desire to provoke that man before the Supreme Sorcerer was gone. The news from this place would surely make the other covetous Hell Lords restrain themselves. He was becoming more and more curious about the man who had broken into Hell.
Mephisto smiled meaningfully and vanished.
Satannish, his rage impotent, could only vent his fury on the remaining, unfrozen land before retreating into the depths.
After they had all gone, a small, brown teddy bear punched its way out from under a layer of ice. It scratched its head, looked around, and pulled a torn page from the pocket on its belly.
Satannish's spilled blood, sensing an external presence, began to move across the ice. The bear didn't notice as the dark fluid flowed over its fluffy body, slowly being absorbed into its fabric.
