Chapter 9: Misunderstanding

"What the—!"

Devero exclaimed loudly.

The effect was simply too powerful!

The doubled effectiveness of any potion?

No wonder the experimental Polyjuice Potion he had taken earlier suddenly worked as well as a fully brewed version.

And this ability to discern the composition and crafting method of any potion at a glance?

It was overpowered!

Devero quickly made up his mind.

Tomorrow, he would visit the potion shop in Diagon Alley

and inspect every potion on display.

He could even deduce new brewing methods by studying the existing ones.

And, combining this with his doubled potion effectiveness trait,

he could economize on materials while creating extraordinary potions.

Just like this time!

Excitement coursed through him,

but Devero gradually calmed down.

"Hmm, now that I have this trait,

I might be able to make a living by improving potion recipes and selling them.

With that money, I could explore more magical realms and continue upgrading my traits!"

Yes!

He now had a self-sustaining cycle!

Feeling exhilarated,

Devero glanced at his items tab

and remembered that he still had an unused Spell Proficiency Card.

His experience in Knockturn Alley had reminded him

that he needed a reliable escape method.

Apparition seemed like the perfect choice for this,

but practicing it on his own had always felt too dangerous.

The risk of Splinching was just too high.

Now, using the Spell Proficiency Card on Apparition seemed like the most logical and worthwhile decision.

Without hesitation, Devero used the card.

[Ding!]

[Spell Proficiency Card has been used!]

In an instant, a flood of Apparition-related knowledge and experience poured into Devero's mind.

For an average person,

such a massive influx of information

would likely be overwhelming enough to cause them to faint.

But Devero was no ordinary person—

he was a magical prodigy.

This level of information was challenging,

but he quickly processed it after only a brief moment of disorientation.

When he checked his spell library,

he was pleasantly surprised.

[Apparition (Mastery/Verbal)]

Mastery?!

That was equivalent to wizards who had held an Apparition license for three years or more!

This meant he could now Apparate almost anywhere with ease.

He was officially an expert!

Just as Devero was deciding where to test his new skill,

a voice suddenly came from behind him.

"Tom?"

Devero stiffened and turned around rigidly.

Standing in the doorway was none other than Professor Snape.

His sharp eyes were locked onto Devero.

"Tom?"

Snape's low, skeptical voice carried a dangerous edge.

"What are you doing here?"

Devero's heart sank.

He knew he was in trouble.

For a moment, he couldn't think of a convincing explanation.

All he could do was stammer nervously.

"Uh, Professor Snape, I, uh... I mean..."

Snape's expression grew darker.

"Where is Devero?"

His voice was colder now,

and his eyes, sharp as a serpent's, scrutinized the Tom-like Devero.

Devero internally groaned.

If not for his upgraded trait,

which had doubled the effectiveness of the Polyjuice Potion,

Snape would have immediately spotted the flaws in his disguise.

But now,

there were practically no visible traces of the transformation being incomplete.

Devero scrambled for an explanation,

his mind racing for something that wouldn't land him in Azkaban.

Before he could answer,

Snape spoke again.

"You went to Knockturn Alley today, didn't you?"

Devero froze.

He noticed Snape's hand creeping toward his back,

likely clutching his wand.

The professor's eyes were fixed on his every movement,

burning with suspicion.

Devero realized Snape had completely misunderstood the situation.

He quickly raised his hands in a gesture of surrender.

"No, no, no, Professor! You've got it wrong!"

But he had forgotten—

he was still holding his wand!

"Expelliarmus!"

Snape roared.

A beam of red light shot from Snape's wand,

heading straight for Devero.

But Devero wasn't known as a magical prodigy for nothing.

The past few days of training hadn't been in vain.

He reacted swiftly,

shouting a spell of his own.

"Protego!"

A shimmering shield formed in front of him,

just in time to deflect Snape's spell.

Sparks flew everywhere.

Devero felt the immense power behind Snape's spell.

The force almost overwhelmed him.

"This is the strength of an adult wizard?"

Devero thought, his heart pounding.

But there was no time for contemplation.

Snape didn't hesitate,

casting another spell immediately.

"Stupefy!"

A jet of blue light hurtled toward Devero.

He barely dodged it in time,

countering with his own spell.

"Mobilicorpus!"

A chair leg lifted off the ground

and flew toward Snape.

Snape dodged it effortlessly

and retaliated without missing a beat.

"Petrificus Totalus!"

Purple light shot toward Devero,

forcing him to cast another Shield Charm.

But this time,

he felt his magic reserves starting to run low.

He knew he couldn't keep this up for long.

He had to explain himself.

"Professor Snape, please listen to me!" Devero shouted.

"I am Devero! I used Polyjuice Potion to turn into this!

I only went to Knockturn Alley for fun!"

Snape sneered, his expression dark and menacing.

"Expelliarmus!"

Another red beam flew toward Devero.

"A child who hasn't even started school

can brew Polyjuice Potion?

Do you really think I'd believe that?"

Snape's voice was dangerously low,

and his fury was barely contained.

Devero managed to block the spell,

but his magic reserves were rapidly depleting.

He gritted his teeth,

knowing he had to change tactics.

"Apparate!"

With a loud crack,

Devero disappeared.

Snape didn't hesitate.

He immediately aimed behind himself and shouted:

"Expelliarmus!"

Their spells collided mid-air,

sending both of them staggering backward.

Snape lost hold of his wand,

but he managed to stay on his feet.

Devero, however,

wasn't as lucky.

He crashed into the corridor wall and collapsed to the floor,

too dazed and exhausted to get up.

He had intended to Apparate behind Snape and disarm him,

but Snape's extensive combat experience had thwarted his plan.

The disparity in their magical power was painfully clear.

Snape quickly retrieved his wand

and grabbed Devero by the collar,

pressing the tip of the wand against the boy's chin.

"Tell me where the boy is!

Which witch did you sell him to?!"

Devero had never seen such an expression on Snape's face before.

The professor looked absolutely terrifying.

Devero groaned weakly,

his entire body aching.

He could feel his clothes becoming ill-fitting.

Snape's expression shifted from menacing to confused,

and then to sheer astonishment.

"Devero?!

It's really you!!"

Snape's eyes widened in disbelief

as he watched the boy's appearance gradually return to normal.
