Chapter 388: Chapter 387: The Department of Mysteries
Primordial substances are usually not large in volume or weight; to create a Philosopher's Stone as large as the one owned by Flamel, only about ten grams of primordial substance is needed.
Such a large stone, after careful regulation, could supply more than ten magic metal factories.
If there are indeed tens of thousands of tons of primordial substance on the moon that can be mined, there would be no need to worry about a shortage of magic power for at least a hundred years.
"Do well, and let's aim to land on the moon within a year," Murphy encouraged.
With the support of magic, landing on the moon would not require a rocket as huge as the Saturn V. A slight modification of the existing rocket models would be enough to send people to lunar orbit. Aiming to land on the moon within a year is not particularly exaggerated.
However, even under the best predictions, it would take more than a year before the primordial magic power from the moon could be utilized.
And it's still unknown whether those primordial substances can be directly used.
Murphy did not plan to put all his eggs in one basket. After arranging the moon landing plan, he returned to the British Ministry of Magic located underground in London.
To avoid startling anyone, Murphy visited through the fireplace, appearing in the main lobby on the first floor.
It had been a long time since he had been to the Ministry of Magic, and many of the arrangements here looked different from the past.
Originally, there was a statue of the Magic Brothers at the fountain in the main lobby, where a wizard was exaggeratedly holding up his wand surrounded by witches, centaurs, fairies, and house-elves.
But now, in the center of the fountain, there was a huge solo statue, a ten-meter-tall wizard resembling Murphy by about fifty percent. One of his hands held a wand, extended forward, with the tip of the wand emitting bright light, and the other hand was holding a globe-like sphere.
Water was spraying out from the center of the sphere.
The base of the statue bore the name: "The Radiant Guide."
Murphy frowned at the statue, feeling as if flattery had gone too far.
What originally looked like a somewhat majestic statue turned ridiculous with the spraying water, reminding him of a foolish goddess's performance in a cartoon from his previous life.
Sure enough, he hadn't even finished the thought when he saw a jet of water also spraying from the top of the wizard statue.
Well, the designer of this statue might as well go mine coal in Siberia.
He went straight to the ninth floor underground, the Department of Mysteries.
The place had changed significantly. Exiting the elevator, he was greeted by an extremely spacious lobby, with six other huge halls connected on both sides. These spacious halls housed numerous complex devices, and hundreds of researchers in white lab coats moved about.
Some of them were wizards holding wands, while others were completely Muggles.
At the end of the hall was a small black door, tightly closed at the moment.
Murphy went to a hall on his right, glanced over the crowd, and found a young, brown-curly-haired researcher.
"Are you Jim Best? Did you write that paper, 'Some Research on Primordial Magic'?"
Best was thin and tall, making him appear somewhat malnourished. His curly hair fell in front of his eyes, giving him a somewhat vacant look.
It took a while for him to realize Murphy was speaking to him. "Oh, that paper is crap, please flush it down the toilet."
Murphy was momentarily speechless, "I found it quite enlightening."
"Then you must be an idiot, sir, or know nothing about magic," Best said. "I wrote that piece before, but now I've found three mistakes in it. Unfortunately, the archivists told me the paper had already passed review and was uploaded to the cloud. Great! Now you all can laugh at me!"
Murphy didn't get angry but asked, "What mistakes did you find?"
"The most important one, regarding the source of primordial magic. I initially thought these primal magics were very pure, so I believed they were like those 'fundamental elements' mentioned in magic theories, originating from nature. But then I found out, bullshit! Whether it's prophecy, love, death, etc., they're all full of human elements."
"They seem pure because those mental wavelengths are too broad and have been overlaid so many times that they've become a complete white noise. It's not empty; on the contrary, it's filled."
"These 'primordial magics' are not primitive or inherent at all; they are man-made, born from people, soaked in human traces."
"So, you're saying the magic energy here is acquired rather than innate?"
"Exactly!" Best nodded emphatically. "So the foundational assumptions of that paper are all wrong, and what follows is naturally nonsense."
"What about the speculation that primordial magic can be used as a source of magical energy?" Murphy asked.
Best thought for a moment, "That part is unaffected. Are you from the R&D department?"
"Sort of. How powerful is this source of primordial magic as an energy source? You didn't detail this part in your paper, have you done any calculations?"
"I've made some estimates," Best said. "There are twelve rooms here, each containing a unique magic or phenomenon. I initially realized this was a magical ritual, but its specific purpose was unknown."
"However, this magic energy is not generated out of thin air but is guided from somewhere."
"I analyzed the magic flow and found the volume of magic flowing here incredibly large, unbelievably so. At least 390,000 Hubbles of magic power flow here every second from an unknown source, with a large portion flowing away again in some invisible direction, but still, about thousands to tens of thousands of Hubbles of magic power remain here per second."
"A part of it supports the operation of this ritual, and some seem to have other uses."
"I haven't studied this part closely, but the Floo Network seems related to here, as well as the Ministry's Trace System, Magical Disaster Sensing System, etc. I suspect a part of the Department of Mysteries' function is to serve as the center of the Ministry's energy source and various operational functions."
"What if we wanted to use this energy as a stable source of magic for factories?" Murphy asked.
"It shouldn't be difficult, just replicate this ritual, and we might be able to receive that magic. Speaking of which, it's a bit like a magic node, similar to a repeater or router."
Magic node...
A flash of insight crossed Murphy's mind.
"The Magical Network," he said.
"What?" Best didn't quite understand.
"Could this place be a node of the Magical Network?"
In the initial research of the magical institute, it was speculated that there might be a "network" managing and controlling various magics and spell effects. This network complements the effects of various magics, allowing wizards to transform a cup into a mouse without specifying every single hair, greatly improving the usability of magic and lowering the threshold for magic.
Murphy and the researchers had always thought the so-called "Magical Network" would be something like the "Spirit World," entirely hidden on the dark side of the world, something of a rule-like nature.
But after hearing Best's description, Murphy had to consider a possibility.
Could the Magical Network not be as lofty as he had imagined? Could it, in fact, be a very tangible thing?
Like this Department of Mysteries in front of him?
