Chapter 201: Chapter 201: Sinners Standing on the Side of "God"
Neuvillette, Lumine, and Paimon soon returned. The clues and information they had gathered were largely the same as what Luna and Arlecchino had previously found during their exploration of the ruins.
However, Neuvillette revealed that while Lumine was in the Fortress of Meropide, she had used Tartaglia's Vision to see him submerged in water of an extraordinary texture—likely the Primordial Sea itself. Moreover, she had witnessed a colossal narwhal within it.
Neuvillette seemed to have a hunch about this, but lacked concrete evidence to support his theory. News of the events in Poisson had been tightly suppressed under a strict information blockade.
"A truth revealed at the wrong time could incite immense chaos and unrest," Neuvillette warned.
Luna and Navia both agreed. Any further turmoil at this critical juncture would be disastrous. The fewer problems they faced, the better.
Inside Palais Mermonia, Luna hurried to the door, guided by Sedene.
Yesterday, after their meeting adjourned, Neuvillette had asked her to come to Palais Mermonia today.
The reason was simple: he wanted answers from Furina about the Slate, the Prophecy, and everything connected to them.
The first victims of the Prophecy had already appeared.
If they did nothing, the death toll would only continue to rise.
He'll never get any answers from her, Luna thought.
"I've already told you, there's no need to worry! I will save Fontaine, I will save everyone!"
Luna paused at the doorway, peering inside.
Furina stood opposite Neuvillette, her brow furrowed tightly, her voice ringing with unwavering determination.
Neuvillette's eyes narrowed slightly, his posture unyielding.
"Forgive me for being blunt, Hydro Archon Focalors, but someone has already died because of the Prophecy."
He handed her a list.
"This is the list of victims from Poisson."
The black ink on the white paper stood out starkly.
Furina's heart skipped a beat. Could every name on this list be...?
"Thanks to the Phantom Thief's assistance and the Spina di Rosula's disaster drills, the number of casualties has been kept to this. But each name represents a precious, living life."
"I will not allow another 'accident' like this to happen again."
"Tell me everything, Focalors."
Neuvillette's tone was calm, yet brooked no argument or evasion.
Furina recognized this tone all too well.
It was an interrogation.
The very tone Neuvillette used as the Chief Justice during the countless trials she had witnessed over the past five centuries, when questioning both sides of a case.
Back then, she had been an observer. Now, it seemed she had become the accused.
Furina secretly clenched her fists, avoiding his gaze. "I've already told you, I know nothing."
"Neither about this Slate you speak of, nor about the former Hydro Archon, Egeria."
Neuvillette remained silent.
"Surprised?"
She forced a smile. "I know you don't believe me. No one does."
No one would stand by her side.
"But the greatness of the Archons lies precisely in their power to defy mortal comprehension! Don't judge true divinity through your own limited perspective!"
"Enough of this pointless discussion. All you need to do is—trust me!"
That... should settle things.
No matter what, she had to endure. Furina reaffirmed her resolve, yet still dared not meet Neuvillette's gaze.
"Alright, the Opera House awaits me. Farewell."
Furina hurried toward the door, then suddenly froze.
"Luna..."
Luna gave a slight bow. "Greetings, Lady Furina."
Furina grew even more flustered. "Ah-ah, ahem, hello..." She avoided Luna's gaze even more resolutely.
"...Goodbye!"
Furina practically fled the scene, leaving behind a silent Neuvillette and a visibly anxious and bewildered Sedene.
"Miss Luna, you've arrived," Neuvillette acknowledged with a nod.
Luna tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "It seems the conversation didn't go smoothly?"
"...She refused to talk at all. I don't understand. With such a grave crisis looming, we should be uniting to face it together." Neuvillette sighed softly.
"As you've likely noticed, Furina is hiding a secret and refuses to confide in anyone."
"Time is running out. If we continue making no progress, the countdown will reach zero, and the Prophecy will come to pass..."
He lowered his head, lost in thought for a moment.
"If there were another way, I wouldn't resort to this. But for the future of Fontaine, I must find a way to corner Furina and force her to confront the severity of the situation."
It was coming.
This had to be the Judgment of the Hydro Archon, as described in the third act of the play.
"I need assistance," Neuvillette said.
"I can help you, Mr. Neuvillette."
Indeed, Luna knew many people, all Vision holders with considerable abilities.
For example:
1. Captain Chevreuse of the Special Task Force.
2. Chiori of the Chioriya Boutique.
3. Navia of the Spina di Rosula.
4. Lynette of the House of the Hearth.
5. Champion Duelist Clorinde.
Arlecchino couldn't be relied upon; it was unlikely a Fatui Harbinger would personally intervene so easily.
Thinking about it, it's quite remarkable, Neuvillette nodded.
"You're impressive."
Luna blinked and smiled. "Is that a compliment?"
Neuvillette said sincerely, "Your network is truly extensive. I appreciate your assistance."
"Of course."
If you don't mind a mole slipping in, Luna thought with a faint smile.
Regrettably, this time, she wouldn't be standing by Neuvillette's side.
I won't be your ally.
Luna emerged from Palais Mermonia, stepping into the shadows and pulling a mask from her cloak.
"As for which side I should stand on..."
That night, Furina dragged her weary body back to her bedroom and collapsed onto the bed. She stared blankly at her hands, a burning sensation suddenly welling up in her eyes. Burying her face in the pillow, she murmured, "I truly don't know..."
If only I really knew everything.
Every time she recalled the list of victims, written in black ink on white paper, a chill ran through her. Her voice came out hoarse.
"I'm sorry..."
Was it all for nothing?
The Prophecy will come to pass after all. Fate is immutable.
Perhaps it's best to give up? But... then who will save Fontaine? What else can I do?
Furina couldn't imagine a future where she wasn't playing the role of God.
Tears welled up in her eyes, soaking the pillow.
"White Cat..." The murmured name slipped from her lips.
There won't be any response, of course.
"I'm here."
"Huh?"
Yet a familiar voice, tinged with its usual teasing tone, answered her call.
Furina slowly raised her head.
The soft moonlight blurred Luna's figure, leaving only the gleam in her eyes beneath the mask and the faint smile playing on her lips vividly clear.
Luna sat by the window, gazing down at Furina.
"Good evening," she greeted, tucking a strand of wind-blown hair behind her ear with a light laugh.
"My Lovely Lady Furina."
