Chapter 91: Junior Sister, You’ve Worked Hard
The interior of the Auspicious Cave was brightly lit, with not a trace of mist visible in the light. The array brought back by Sect Leader Bai was indeed effective.
Although the cave couldn’t be described as orderly, the anxious unrest had been quelled.
To soothe the people’s emotions, the recently distributed dinner included not only dry biscuits but also a small piece of jerky for each person.
These ordinary folks had been urgently gathered here, with little time to bring much of their stored food. They relied solely on the rations provided by the city lord’s manor. To them, the jerky was a rare delicacy.
“Sect Leader Bai has made excellent arrangements, truly embodying the spirit of a city lord,” an elder remarked respectfully from a high platform.
Sect Leader Bai stood with his hands behind his back, gazing at the crowd below. He replied with a faint smile, “You flatter me, Master Liang. The stability of the Auspicious Cave is a collective effort.”
“Hmph! If the next city lord doesn’t embody that spirit, then who does?”
Sect Leader Bai turned to face Lu Yang, who wore a disgruntled expression. “What do you mean by that, Sect Leader Lu?” he asked coldly.
“Nothing in particular. I merely wished to praise Sect Leader Bai for his impartiality,” Lu Yang retorted sarcastically.
Sect Leader Bai understood Lu Yang’s implied criticism—that he had closed the array’s entrance without waiting for City Lord Liu’s return. However, this had been City Lord Liu’s secret command: to seal the array after noon, regardless of the circumstances.
“Sect Leader Lu, I have already explained that I was merely following orders,” Sect Leader Bai replied.
“I hope that’s the case. But some people might think they deserve the city lord’s position now that City Lord Liu and Sect Leader Qi are gone,” Lu Yang said, his youthful arrogance evident.
If Sect Leader Bai truly possessed an array capable of dispelling the mist, why hadn’t he used it sooner? Clearly, the array wasn’t his but had been provided by City Lord Liu, who couldn’t reveal himself while searching for the traitor. By entrusting the array to Sect Leader Bai, City Lord Liu had inadvertently allowed him to claim a significant achievement. If they managed to escape this time, Sect Leader Bai would likely be the next city lord.
As Lu Yang pondered this, he couldn’t help but scoff again. Suddenly, a realization struck him—if his suspicions were correct and the array was indeed from City Lord Liu, why had it been deployed so late?
Sect Leader Bai, despite his patience, was growing irritated by the younger man’s repeated provocations. He channeled his spiritual energy, intending to assert his dominance over Lu Yang.
However, he was shocked to find that Lu Yang remained unaffected, his expression one of puzzled contemplation. Sect Leader Bai increased his pressure, only to sense his spiritual energy being drawn away by some unseen force.
Following the flow of his energy, he discovered it was being absorbed by the core of the Purifying Array at the center of the cave’s ceiling. He was astonished—that was the very array City Lord Liu had given him!
Simultaneously, the previously calmed crowd erupted in screams. Several elderly people fainted, and others felt varying degrees of weakness.
Just as they thought they had escaped danger, they found themselves once again in peril.
Elsewhere
“Damn it! Why, why, why!”
Surrounded by darkness, only the faint glow of luminous stones pierced the gloom. City Lord Liu’s eyes were bloodshot with rage as he kicked over an altar. Around him, red talismans were scattered, and a massive totem was carved into the ground, filled with milky white liquid flowing through its grooves.
The entire array exuded an aura of mystery and danger.
City Lord Liu retrieved the intricate horn from his pocket and roared into it, “I’ve drained an entire underground White Stone mine and the life force of every citizen in the city! Why can’t I sense the so-called True Sovereign?!”
A deep, resonant voice echoed back, sounding like a thousand drums beating in unison. Its words were indistinct, as if spoken in an ancient language, yet their meaning became clear in City Lord Liu’s mind: “Someone has initiated the ritual to awaken the True Sovereign before you. You must rush to the temple and kill them before the True Sovereign fully awakens, or you will not obtain the power you seek.”
City Lord Liu’s expression darkened, his teeth grinding audibly. The thought of unforeseen obstacles thwarting his grand plan filled him with frustration, as if the entire world conspired against him.
He flung open the door to the secret chamber and dashed out with all haste.
At the other end of the horn, a colossal beast towered between heaven and earth, shrouded in dense mist. It resembled the Ming Kun depicted on the stone pillar, appearing as the god of the mist itself.
Before the beast stood a monstrous creature with the body of an octopus, its torso a swirling vortex. Despite the vast difference in size, the two entities faced each other as equals.
“You cannot stop me,” the beast rumbled. “Three thousand years ago, even your master was mere prey in my eyes.”
“You are unworthy of being my master’s prey now,” the octopus creature retorted. “It was said you were devoured by Zhuo Long, yet here you are, a remnant guarding the True Sovereign’s Divine Court.”
“You and your master have never seen true darkness. The True Sovereign must not be resurrected; it must be destroyed.”
“It seems Zhuo Long not only consumed your flesh but also tainted your soul.”
Enraged, the colossal beast opened its colossal maw, unleashing a roar inaudible to human ears. The Dream-Eating Ghost, undaunted, danced its eight tentacles in the wind, eyes gleaming with resolve.
You Su felt as if he were falling endlessly, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of images. Scenes from his childhood fantasies morphed into memories of the past month, then into unfamiliar recollections. These visions were hazy and distant, yet heavy with significance. Each time he tried to focus on them, an immense force repelled him.
He tumbled through the chaotic scenes until, finally, he came to a halt before a vivid image: a black coffin buried deep within an ocean trench, oozing an endless stream of black blood. Sea creatures that touched this blood transformed into grotesque, gigantic monsters.
You Su stared at the coffin, feeling an inexplicable familiarity. The scene began to animate; the monsters swam past him, their massive forms dwarfing him. The black blood flowed toward him, and he instinctively reached out to touch it.
In an instant, his fingertip became a vortex, drawing the blood from the coffin into his body. He stood paralyzed as the coffin revealed its true color—white.
A voice, like a divine revelation, echoed in his mind: “You are the source of all sin, and only you can sever the sins of the world.”
Before You Su could grasp the weight of this revelation, the memories shattered around him. He felt himself hurtling backward, witnessing the destruction of each scene until he reached the moment he had struck Ji Lingruo with his sword. With great effort, he lunged toward that image.
You Su found himself enveloped in darkness, feeling as though he were in a warm, moist environment that brought him an unprecedented sense of comfort. He felt a surge of strength coursing through his body, as if something within him was about to burst forth.
This sensation grew stronger, sharpening his consciousness. You Su’s eyelashes fluttered as he slowly opened his eyes—
Before him lay the most breathtaking sight in the world; in his ears, the most melodious sound.
Ji Lingruo, exhausted, lay sprawled across You Su, her breath coming in soft, fragrant gasps.
Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around her, startling her from her daze. The voice that followed made her blush deeply.
“Junior Sister, you’ve worked hard…”
Ji Lingruo’s mind went blank. She decided to close her eyes and think of nothing, only to find the arms around her tightening.
“Junior Sister, stop pretending. I know you’re awake.”
“You!”
Ji Lingruo couldn’t contain her embarrassment and anger. She propped herself up and looked at You Su, whose eyes were once again pitch-black, his face radiant with happiness. Her embarrassment gave way to joy, and tears streamed down her face as she embraced him, sobbing, “You’re finally awake…”
You Su felt reborn, his body surging with immense energy, like the legendary phoenix reborn from the ashes.
“Thank you, Junior Sister.”
You Su was well-versed in the Heaven, Earth, and Human scrolls. He could sense that Ji Lingruo had used a dual cultivation technique from the Human scroll, one led by the female partner. The profound transformation in his body was likely a result of her actions.
“What good is a mere thank you?!” Ji Lingruo lightly punched You Su’s chest, still too embarrassed to meet his gaze.
You Su couldn’t resist planting a kiss on her cheek and whispering in her ear, “I will spend a lifetime thanking you, Junior Sister, until you feel it is enough.”
Ji Lingruo froze, her body flushing with heat. She suddenly remembered their intimate connection and quickly pulled away, feeling a profound emptiness.
“Quick, get up. You can trick me later,” she said, her face flushed. She struggled to her feet, feeling a wave of dizziness.
A soft popping sound echoed through the air, like a wine bottle being uncorked. The black coffin was in disarray.
You Su quickly stood up and retrieved his Dimensional Bag, searching for clothes to wear. Ji Lingruo, however, swayed and fainted into his arms.
“Junior Sister!” You Su called out in alarm, but Ji Lingruo did not respond. He quickly examined her and found no issues; her meridians were clear, and her spiritual energy was robust. Surprisingly, in her lower abdomen, where her spiritual platform should be, a round pellet had formed.
You Su was puzzled but realized that Ji Lingruo had broken through to a new cultivation stage. She had advanced from the mid-stage of the Meridian Opening Realm to the Spirit Platform Realm.
You Su was astonished. The effects of dual cultivation were incredible, but he knew there must be more to it. If dual cultivation were this powerful, everyone would practice it, even the most conservative cultivators.
After confirming that Ji Lingruo was safe, You Su dressed himself and carefully clothed her as well. He then turned his attention to the white jade coffin, realizing it was identical to the one he had seen in his vision.
Just then, footsteps echoed through the chamber. You Su turned to see an old man entering, his face contorted with rage. It was City Lord Liu.
Elsewhere
In the far east of the Central Realm Continent lay the city of Yongning, the sole port connecting the Central Realm to the Eastern Cascade, home of the Demon Clan. The shoreline was lined with Divine Light Stones to ward off evil spirits, and a massive ship, adorned with the same stones, facilitated travel between the realms.
As the ship docked, an elderly woman in the highest cabin tended to her young mistress, who lay flushed and restless on the bed. The young mistress was a prodigy, destined to be the future Serpent Empress. Yet, she seemed to be suffering from more than mere seasickness.
The elderly woman recalled that the young mistress and her twin sister shared a psychic bond. She realized that the twin, who had run away three years ago, must be the cause of her sister’s distress.
“My lady, are you alright?” the elderly woman asked.
“I am fine, Granny Liu,” the young mistress replied weakly. “The Eternal Height Divine Mountain only allows one of us to enter the Central Realm. I will be waiting for you in Yongning City. You must find my foolish sister and bring her back. And…”
“Kill the man who defiled her!”
The young mistress, her voice filled with murderous intent, bore a striking resemblance to Ji Lingruo.
