Chapter 21: The Battleground
Nathan glanced at the Judicator Priest and the Black Shaman, his eyes narrowed with resolve. "I can't afford to lose this fight. You're supposed to be the best at your level, my father said... Your better be" he said, the weight of his father's expectations pressing on him.
With a clenched fist, Nathan took out the Soul Stone his father had given him. He crushed it in his palm, and instantly, a dark cloud enveloped his body. The energy around him twisted into a malevolent aura, transforming him into a living nightmare. Fear radiated from him like a tangible force, suffocating, creeping into the minds of his enemies, pulling them toward their worst fears.
You have been blessed by a Soul Stone
"You will feed on the fears of your enemies, and once enough terror has been absorbed, they will be cursed with Nightmare Phantasm Hallucinations"
The crowd gasped as Nathan's form became shrouded in darkness. The very air around him crackled with terror, his presence warping reality.
"Ooooooh, looks like the son of the infamous warlock Xianimous has a little gift from his father!" the narrator's voice boomed across the battleground. "Look at this walking nightmare, folks! Beware of the fear he spreads!"
The Judicator Priest and the Black Shaman braced themselves. They could feel the weight of Nathan's new power sinking into their minds, the air thickening with tension. This would be no ordinary fight.
Anger boiling in the veins of the shaman he said "What the fuck, this should not even be allowed, what did he buy the jury, is that what it is..."
"What ever lets give it a go" the priest said
The desert battlefield shimmered in the heat, the golden sands shifting underfoot as the four combatants faced off. Nathan stood tall, the dark aura from the Soul Stone swirling around him, his face twisted in determination. His warlock partner, cloaked in shadow, prepared to cast a barrage of curses. Across from them stood the Judicator Priest, his eyes glowing with divine wrath, and the Black Shaman, already placing dark elemental totems into the ground.
The air was thick with tension as the first move was made.
The Judicator Priest raised his hands, light burning bright between his fingertips, and called upon his divine power. A beam of divine energy lashed from the sky toward Nathan, seeking to tear at his very soul.
Nathan barely had time to react as his warlock ally muttered a dark incantation, casting a shield of shadow around the warrior. The divine wrath struck the shield, and while it cracked and hissed, it held. Nathan gritted his teeth and charged forward, his sword raised high, aiming straight for the shaman.
The Black Shaman wasted no time. He slammed his hammer into the ground, summoning a swirling vortex of dark lightning. As the storm raged around him, his totems erupted with bursts of fire and shadow. The air became thick with curses as his elemental powers sought to choke the life out of Nathan.
Nathan grunted as lightning flicked at his epic tank armor which was keeping him safe. The Soul Stone's power was charging, drawing in from the fear the shaman and priest alike had. Each worries, each failed attempt, it absorbed the fear, charging the curse a little more. His vision sharpened as he was advancing slowly threw the storm, his sword clashed with the shaman's hammer. Sparks flew, and the ground trembled at each blows.
Behind him, the warlock began weaving dark magic, targeting the Judicator Priest with a chain of curses, tendrils of shadow lashed at the priest, pulling at his life force.
But the Judicator was no easy target. His divine power flared, burning through the shadows with radiant light. "Divine Retribution!" he cried, a spell which cast back the power of an enemy spell with 150% power. The air crackled as a holy beam the size of a tower collided with the warlock's dark magic, pushing them both to their limits.
Nathan growled, feeling the weight of the elemental curses dragging him down. The shaman's lightning was relentless, bolts crackling through the air, seeking to paralyze him, his armor was starting to be damaged. But the curse was finally evoked. His eyes flashed, and the air around him seemed to darken even more.
The Black Shaman froze for a moment, sensing the danger. Nathan's curse was complete. The phantasm of his worst nightmares began to form around him, dark creatures clawing at his mind, pulling him into a mental abyss. The shaman staggered wanting to flee, his totems flickering as the hallucinations overwhelmed him, all the pain he ever live was drawn back to his mind, fear was seen in his face.
Nathan took the opportunity and swung his blade with all his might. The shaman waking up tried to summon another surge of lightning, but Nathan's sword cut through it, crashing into the shaman's side and sending him tumbling to the ground.
The Judicator Priest, now alone, had tried casting Divine Light to heal his ally, but the warlock was too quick. With a flick of his hand, he bound the priest with shadow chains. The priest's eyes widened in terror as chains ripped out of his very own body to wrap around him.
With one final swing, Nathan struck the priest down. The crowd erupted in gasps and cheers as the Judicator fell to his knees, the power of the Soul Stone too much to overcome.
The fight was over.
"The winners— WarrCreep!!" the announcer's voice boomed as the crowd cheered for the victorious duo. "Ladies and gentlemen! What a fight we've just witnessed! But now... who will be our next contenders?"
The team listings on the screen above flickered like a slot machine, rapidly cycling through names.
Shadow Requiem vs. TenXYot
"It's our turn!" Ryuichi thought, sending the message to MorTyous.
"Let's go!" MorTyous replied, a thrill of anticipation in his voice. "Alright, remember what we trained—wait for my lightning storm, then strike right after."
"Got it" Ryuichi nodded feeling the rush of energy from the preparation. "We Just got to confirm their spec first. I think it's a mage and a hunter but I am not sure." said MorTyous.
After accepting the invite to the battleground, Ryuichi and MorTyous were teleported onto the burning dunes. Sand stretched endlessly, with heat waves shimmering in the distance. In front of them stood their opponents, just as suspected—a mage and a hunter.
MorTyous's eyes narrowed as he studied the mage. He seemed to be an arcane mage, but with fire attributes laced into his casting—a strange combination. The air around him shimmered with magical heat, ready to erupt at any moment. Meanwhile, the hunter looked like a Beastmaster, his magical laser rifle gleaming in the desert sun screamed accuracy spec, no doubt deadly with every shot, an he seemed to be hiding his pet, there was no pet in sight.
"Alright Arcane with fire and a Sniper Beastmaster, with an unknown pet." Ryuichi said.
Ten... Nine... Eight... The crowd held its breath, the tension rising with every second. Seven... Six... Ryuichi's heart raced in sync with the ticking timer. Five... Four... He adjusted his grip, eyes locked on the enemy ahead. Three... Two... The silence was deafening, the air thick with anticipation. One... Zero! Go!!!
The desert wind howled, sending grains of sand swirling around the battleground. Ryuichi and MorTyous stood firm, tension crackling in the air between them and their opponents—a seasoned mage and hunter. The crowd watched from their magical screens, eyes glued to the combatants.
The moment the signal rang out, chaos erupted.
The mage began casting, his hands glowing with arcane and fire energy, creating spirals of flames. The ground beneath Ryuichi's feet started to heat up, but he was already on the move. He disappeared from view, becoming one with the shadows.
MorTyous wasted no time. He slammed down his totem—an elemental totem—causing the ground to tremble. Dark energy spiraled up into the sky, and with a mighty clap of his hands, a crackling Lightning Storm began to gather in the clouds above.
The hunter spotted MorTyous' move and fired his laser rifle. The shot was deadly accurate, but MorTyous was ready. He shifted to the side, the beam barely missing him as it sizzled through the air.
Then, the storm broke.
Bolts of lightning shot down from the sky, striking the sand around them. The mage's concentration wavered as one bolt grazed his robe, but he kept his spell focused on the sand, igniting it into a wave of fire aimed at MorTyous.
MorTyous's protection totem shielded him to absorb the flames but then vanished under the assault. "Now, Ryuichi!" he called.
Ryuichi reappeared behind the hunter, his daggers coated in venom. The hunter spun around too late—Ryuichi's blade pierced his armor, and with a quick flick of his wrist, the other dagger slashed across the hunter's chest.
The Beastmaster howled in pain, his armor sparking violently. Ryuichi smirked as the enchanted pieces of the armor began to dematerialize, breaking into shimmering electrical sparks. The chest disintegrated and entered the hunter's belt, meaning his chest was broken.
A two headed snake then pulled out of the sand to attack Ryuichi while desperately, the hunter drank a cleansing potion and raised his rifle, but it was already over. With a final swing, MorTyous sent a bolt of lightning crashing into the hunter's chest. The blast was so powerful that the air crackled with energy. The hunter's body jolted, his eyes wide in shock as his remaining armor exploded into more sparks, leaving him defenseless. His lifeless body collapsed into the sand and the snake disappeared.
The crowd gasped in awe and broke in cheers for the duo.
The mage, seeing his partner fall, tried to unleash his full fire and arcane fury on Ryuichi, but MorTyous wasn't done. Another totem hit the sand, summoning a vortex of wind that knocked the mage off balance.
Ryuichi used the distraction to dash forward, disappearing into the shadows again before reappearing behind the mage. One swift Blood Slash to the back and the mage crumpled to the ground, defeated. The fight was over.
The crowd roared in approval, impressed by the sheer coordination and skill of the Shadow Requiem team. Ryuichi's deadly speed, combined with MorTyous' elemental mastery, had turned the battle into a spectacle.
"Unbelievable!" the commentator cried. "Shadow Requiem wins! What power! What skills!"
Ryuichi and MorTyous exchanged a nod. This was only the beginning.
