Chapter 17: Rogue Class
As they walked together to their next class, Niyane said "Follow me, I want to show you something."
Intrigued, Ryuichi followed Niyane down the corridor, past various rooms, until they stopped in front of a large painting. It depicted two thieves—one of whom resembled Ryuichi—moving stealthily toward a lake of magma, fighting with a precision and grace that seemed almost otherworldly. They slayed enemies with a level of coordination and skill that made it look choreographed, like an intricate dance of death.
"These are your parents, Ryuichi," Niyane said quietly.
Ryuichi looking at the scene, at his father in his armor moving with such grace, the same grace he fought with, his heart felt heavy.
Niyane stood beside him, her voice soft but firm. "You see, Ryuichi, It was them—fighting, knowing each other, having each other's backs. They moved like they were one. It was the raid, the school, the technique, the sheer dedication they had. Every move was about perfecting their craft, protecting their comrades, and upholding the guild's legacy."
Ryuichi's gaze shifted to a figure in the background of the painting—a warlock with dark hair, a pale, almost death-like complexion, and piercing red-black eyes that seemed to burn as he cursed the elementals. "Who's that?" he asked quietly, feeling a chill run down his spine.
Niyane glanced at the warlock in the painting, her expression darkening slightly. "That... is Nathan's father, Xianimous"
Ryuichi's eyes widened. "Nathan's father? Where is he now?"
"He teaches the Warlock class here," she said. "He's one of the most powerful warlocks this guild has ever had and maybe even in some part of the world. According to rumors, he is seeking to become an Elden, which is not good if you ask me, there is rumors that they are part oft he cartel, but the ancients ones would most likely know and reject him."
"His father is that powerful" he thought inwardly.
"Well thank you Niyane, I wanted to see that" Ryuichi said
"Your Welcome! I got to go to class now so I will talk to you later"
"Alright see you later" he said.
He then decided to stealth back to the upcoming rogue class but as he passed along the stone walls, he noticed little red crystals embedded within them—strange, with a faint red glow at their center. He stepped forward cautiously. The crystal's red light seemed to follow him like a beam. He stepped back, and again, it followed. Ryuichi's instincts flared. "What the hell?" he thought.
Before he could react, a sudden laser shot out from one of the stones, hitting him squarely and knocking him out of stealth. The force slammed him onto the ground, his stealth shattered in an instant.
"Ryuichi!" A voice echoed from above, filled with amusement. Someone was laughing at him. "You can't do that here! hahaha. Those are stealth-detecting lasers. It's here to protect the guild from thieves from other guilds."
Ryuichi groaned, dusting himself off. "Well, thanks who would of thought"
The other guy laughed again, shaking his head. "Don't worry about it. The rogue from the girl's dorm, he is still in the hospital being lectured by priests about sexual Chasity everyday."
The thought of lying in a hospital bed while priests went on about morality, fornication, and sins was nauseating. "Hope that never happens to me" Ryuichi muttered, imagining days of excruciating pain combined with moral lectures on why we should cut our balls off.
As Ryuichi passed through the hallway, his gaze lingered on the paintings that adorned the walls—each one a tribute to the guild's greatest. His eyes locked on one in particular: a portrait of his father, standing tall, his signature dagger gleaming by his side. A pang of longing struck Ryuichi's chest.
"I wish I could talk to you right now..." he thought, staring at the painting, feeling both pride and the weight of the legacy he had to carry. he then walked to the rogue training class which was in the next hallway. Entering the rogue training room, he noticed a sudden shift in the atmosphere. Heads turned, whispers filled the air.
"Ryuichi is here, the son of Luigi Kurogan."
Ryuichi ignored the stares, but it was impossible not to notice the weight of expectation that came with every glance. As he moved further in, a rogue stepped forward with a confident grin.
"Hey, I'm Rikiel" he said, extending his hand. "I am a Sedation Rogue, its a support class, but we can become pretty lethal assassin at a certain level. Nice to meet you."
Ryuichi took his hand, shaking it firmly.
Rikiel continued, his tone both respectful and curious. "So, how's school been treating you? My family's actually a huge fan of your father. You know, both my father and mother were trained by him... and Valentine. Your father used to teach classes here."
Ryuichi nodded, unsure how to respond, but grateful for the respect that his father's name still commanded. "Thanks... it means a lot to me to hear about my family" he said sitting at one of the pulpit.
Valentine's voice echoed through the hall, commanding attention as every student's gaze remained fixed on him.
"Hi everyone! Welcome to the Thief, Rogue or Assassin class—call it whatever you like. We live in the shadows. Welcome!"
The room fell silent, and Valentine's eyes landed on Ryuichi. With a knowing smile, he continued, "As you probably all noticed, we have a Kurogane with us today. Now, let me make something clear. Ryuichi didn't grow up around his father and mother, as some of you might have assumed. He was very young when his parents passed, and he hadn't been formally introduced to the guild. But he's here now, standing among you. Let us all welcome him and in honor to his family— who were also dear friends of mine."
Valentine paused, allowing the words to sink in. The respect for Ryuichi's lineage was palpable in the room.
"So, today, we're going to dive into the different rogue specializations. There are many paths you can take as a rogue, and each requires precision and dedication. First the most popular and versatile, Assassin rogue, then we will look at the adjacent class the Sedative Rogue, specializing in stealth kills and incapacitating targets quietly and let's not forget the less popular paths, like the Crossbow Rogue—ranged experts, lets just hope no one here is into that stuff, because i will be honest, it's never worked....."
After two hours of detailed explanations about each rogue specialization, Valentine finally clapped his hands, signaling the start of something the students had been anticipating.
"Alright," he said with a grin, "I want to see what you're all made of. You will each fight me—one at a time."
A wave of nervous energy rippled through the class. The first student stepped forward, trembling slightly but determined. He vanished into stealth, but Valentine's eyes flickered with amusement. Within seconds, Valentine dodged the student's clumsy attack, kicked him out of stealth, and threw him onto the ground effortlessly.
"You need a lot of practice," Valentine said, shaking his head.
The next student was more skilled, managing to last a little longer but with a quick movement, he was swept under him, sending him sprawling into the sand.
"Not bad" Valentine admitted, "but you've got to learn how to strike with intent. Don't worry—we'll teach you that here."
Then, it was Ryuichi's turn.
The room went silent, all eyes shifting toward him. Ryuichi stepped forward, feeling the weight of expectation on his shoulders. This wasn't just about proving himself as a student. It was about living up to the name Kurogane.
Valentine smiled knowingly, waiting for Ryuichi's move.
Ryuichi stepped forward, the weight of expectation heavy on his shoulders. He locked eyes with Valentine, who stood there, poised, his body relaxed but ready. The entire room watched, holding their breath, waiting to see what the son of Luigi would do.
Without hesitation, Ryuichi activated Spectral Walk, vanishing into the shadows. The air around him shifted, and his body seemed to dissolve into nothing. But Valentine was no ordinary mentor. He closed his eyes, listening for the faintest disturbance in the air. His muscles tensed as he anticipated the strike, as he was meditation he could see everything in the room with his eyes closed, he was able to fight even in the darkest area.
Suddenly, Ryuichi reappeared behind Valentine, his dagger coated in venom, aiming for the vulnerable spot between the ribs. Valentine twisted his body just in time. Valentine smirked, but Ryuichi didn't let up.
Blood Slash came next, a swift follow-up attack aimed at Valentine's shoulder. The blade shimmered with energy, leaving a trail of red in its wake. Valentine had to raise his arm to block the strike, but even as he did, Ryuichi was already moving again, his speed and precision leaving no room for a counterattack, but it was dodged like the blade aimed in emptiness.
Ryuichi pivoted, aiming for Valentine's legs with a low sweep, but Valentine jumped just in time, flipping in mid-air and landing with cat-like reflexes. As soon as his feet touched the ground, Ryuichi was on him again, using Shadow Stitch to try to paralyze Valentine's movement for a split second but it was voided. The attack connected, but in vain against a beast like Valentine—then Ryuichi tried to deliver a powerful Dark Strike but it was blocked by his dagger.
Valentine was no ordinary opponent. As the strike connected, he twisted his body, dispersing the force of the blow with one hand. In an instant, Valentine retaliated, sweeping his leg out and forcing Ryuichi to jump back.
With a fluid motion, Valentine unleashed a blow, forcing Ryuichi on the defensive. Ryuichi dodged and parried, his agility and skill keeping him just out of reach. He ducked under a high kick, rolled away from a punch, and try counter with a strike aimed at Valentine's torso.
"Ok, let's go up a level" Said Valentine
He grabbed Ryuichi's wrist mid-attack, using his own momentum against him. With a sharp twist and a quick sweep of the legs, Valentine flipped Ryuichi onto the floor, slamming him into the sand.
He gasped, the wind knocked out of him as the world spun for a moment. Valentine stood over him, offering a hand, his eyes gleaming with approval.
"Not Bad, you can tell you had some training, but nothing advanced" Valentine chuckled, extending a hand to help Ryuichi off the ground. " You need a lot of improvement. You're out of touch, open, and slow—lacking in key areas of the skills"
