Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Genius
West City could be said to be the most prosperous city on Earth.
The center of the world's economy!
Of course, this is where the largest financial conglomerate, Capsule Corporation, and its leader, the head of Capsule Corporation, are based.
It is also the center of global technology!
Dr. Brief's invention, the Hoi-Poi Capsule, has been in circulation for many years, and to this day, no scientist on Earth has been able to crack the core technology behind it.
As Jiora carried Yamiru through the air over West City, Yamiru felt deeply shocked... though, to be honest, not as much as he expected. Even though the technological level of Earth in his previous life wasn't as advanced as the Dragon Ball Earth, at least he had seen many sci-fi movies. Visual impact had become so numbing after all that time.
At most, he found it a bit novel.
What puzzled Yamiru even more was that he hadn't seen any of those... floating cars without wheels on the streets of West City.
"It's just ahead," Jiora reminded, his voice cutting through Yamiru's thoughts as they sped through the sky.
Yamiru was curious. In the comics, he didn't recall seeing anything like artificial satellites on Earth... and yet, Jiora could fly around so openly in a developed city without being detected. Not only that, but when Raditz, Vegeta, and Nappa arrived on Earth, there was no warning at all from Earth's side. Even if they couldn't be detected in outer space, surely they would be noticed once they entered the atmosphere, right? But they weren't.
Reflecting on this, Yamiru felt an increasing sense of the necessity for Dr. Brief to study alien space technology.
After a spin, Yamiru realized that Jiora had lowered his altitude slightly, now hovering upright above a massive modern estate.
"No one's here?" Yamiru asked.
"Mm." Jiora remained motionless as he hovered.
"Should I... get down?" Yamiru asked.
"Mm..." Jiora considered.
At that moment, from below, what seemed to be a large garden at Bulma's house revealed a robot emerging from the ground. From its appearance, it seemed to be some kind of gardening service robot.
Yamiru wriggled free from Jiora's iron-like grip, and with a quick motion, he dropped straight down from over ten meters.
Thud. Yamiru landed in a squat right in front of the gardener robot, rubbing his knees before standing up.
The robot took a couple of steps back—its movement system appeared to resemble tank treads. The robot's "face" was an electronic screen, which shifted from a calm green to a panicked yellow, and Yamiru could even swear he saw a sweating emoji.
"Hello." Yamiru smiled warmly, "I'm looking for Dr. Brief."
The color on the robot's electronic screen shifted to red, but there was no alarming sound that would alert Yamiru or Jiora. After Yamiru spoke, he could vaguely feel something scanning over his body... he immediately activated his keen vision and sensed an invisible light sweeping across him from the gardener robot's red "expression" on the screen.
"Click," the gardener robot didn't respond verbally but pressed a button on its body.
Could it be preparing to self-destruct? Yamiru thought to himself, stepping back nervously. He quickly added, "I'm Yamiru, I met Dr. Brief in the Superpower Academy in South City. I…"
"Yamiru?"
The electronic screen of the gardener robot suddenly displayed a video, showing Dr. Brief's face.
In the video, Dr. Brief leaned closer to the "camera" and, after a closer look, he said, "It really is you, Yamiru. Hmm... I remember you. You were in South City, right?"
Seeing that Dr. Brief was as calm and unbothered as he had expected, Yamiru felt a little relief and was about to speak when suddenly, the face of Dr. Brief was pushed out of the screen by a white, soft little hand. A large face appeared on the screen— it was Bulma, who had gotten too close.
"Yamiru?" The little girl, with an excellent memory, immediately recognized him and asked, a bit angrily, "Why did you run away from the hospital on your own?"
Huh? Yamiru froze for half a second before reacting. "Oh, it's because I had an urgent matter to attend to! So I left early."
"Ah, you had something urgent, huh? Then I guess I can't say anything." Bulma backed away from the screen, looking much more normal, her petite frame now clearly visible. Yamiru noticed that the background in the video appeared to be a small classroom. On a small round table, there were piles of thick books, with sticky notes sticking out from the sides of almost every book, clearly marking which ones had been read.
"Was she being tutored?" Yamiru wondered. But that made sense. With Bulma's intelligence, no normal Earthling could teach her! Dr. Brief would have her attend high school, but he wouldn't send her to a regular school that taught at the level of other Earth kids. If Yamiru were Dr. Brief, he'd certainly want to teach her himself.
Indeed, Bulma had already returned to the small round table, flipping through the books with hands much smaller than the books themselves... and surprisingly, she even smiled while reading. Yamiru broke into a cold sweat, realizing once again how different the brain of a genius was. Who could smile while reading such thick books?
"She's beautiful, isn't she?" Dr. Brief commented, and only then did Yamiru realize he had been staring at Bulma for too long. He quickly apologized, "Sorry, sorry..."
Dr. Brief chuckled and said, "Every time I see this child studying, I can't help but get absorbed in watching her. She's like a wisdom angel who has fallen to Earth..."
The little girl, still flipping through her book, nodded seriously at her father, "Thank you for the compliment," before returning to her reading.
"No, I just feel like my intelligence is being crushed…" Yamiru joked, "Even though Bulma is only a little over two years old, her knowledge has already far surpassed mine... When I look at her, I feel like a plain ant!"
Dr. Brief smiled without disagreeing. After some pleasantries, he asked, "So, Yamiru, you're here for something? What brings you by?"
"Actually, there is something…" Yamiru stepped forward, turning the gardener robot's head so the screen faced the floating, striking figure of the cosmic visitor from Biretijon—Jiora. Yamiru smiled, "Dr. Brief, let me introduce you. This is Jiora, an alien from the planet Biretijon. What he's holding is a spacecraft capable of Lightspeed travel!"
Yamiru could see, in the video, the little purple-haired girl sitting at the round table with her books closed, turning around to gaze at the screen with her big, beautiful eyes wide open.
"An alien? Lightspeed?" She seemed excited and rushed toward the screen, her little nose nearly touching it, making her look like a piglet. "Wow\..."
\---"That didn't quite match her personality when she grows up!" Yamiru thought, sweating.
\---
Ten minutes later, Dr. Brief had a basic understanding of the purpose of Yamiru and Jiora's visit. After briefly assessing the spacecraft Jiora had brought, Dr. Brief made a rough estimate of how long it would take to fully analyze it… about a week.
"A week? Seven days?" Jiora was visibly surprised, and it was the first time Yamiru had seen this alien act so out of sorts.
Dr. Brief hesitated, "Is it urgent? If we rush, it could be done in five days…" Seeing Jiora's even more surprised expression, Dr. Brief added, "But that would leave no time for the sound system upgrade inside the ship…"
"Pfft!" Yamiru couldn't help but laugh.
The little girl, who had been circling Jiora, occasionally poking him, looked at Yamiru in confusion. "What are you laughing at?" she asked, though she didn't wait for a response and instead walked over to her father, saying, "Dad, let me help you!"
Dr. Brief nodded, "If that's the case, we could save an extra day or two!"
"..." Jiora struggled to keep his mouth from dropping open. He didn't want to show his surprise. That would be too embarrassing and unworthy of his home planet's dignity.
The robot servants took Jiora's spacecraft away, and the father-daughter duo chatted as they walked off. Yamiru suddenly remembered to clarify, "Wait! You misunderstood, Dr. Brief. This spacecraft is a gift for you. Jiora has another ship for returning home…"
