Douluo Dalu 2: Sun-Moon Glory

Chapter 165: Chapter 163: War Begins

Huo Yuhao gently patted Meng Hongchen on the head.

"Senior Sister, his words might've sounded harsh, but they weren't wrong. The strength of sea soul beasts really can't be underestimated. Just look at the densely arranged linked soul tools set up all over the Sunlight. The level of defense they provide is comparable to that of the Hand of the Nation's Soul Engineer Regiment. You know that each of those regiments is capable of holding its own against a Super Douluo, even a Limit Douluo. We really do need to be careful."

He suddenly changed tone and let out a cold snort.

"But still... being underestimated like that? We can't just let it slide, right, Senior Sister Meng?"

Meng Hongchen gave him a knowing look as if to say I knew you thought the same, and nodded in agreement.

"Exactly. This young lady still wants a good ten-thousand-year sixth soul ring. After your baptism of Light of Life, my body should now be able to handle... a soul ring of sixty to seventy thousand years, more or less."

"Dangerous waters, huh... Either way, we should stay alert. Let's head back to the room for a bit."

"Mm-hmm."

On the vast and mighty sea, the Sunlight moved southwest, sailing farther and farther away from land and deeper into the open ocean.

As it went, the clear skies began to cloud over. The waves grew rough, rising and falling with greater force. It was like a storm was building on the horizon, foreshadowing the danger ahead—danger that came from the forbidden zone of the sea soul beasts.

The ship gradually slowed down. Under the dim sky, the navy soldiers stood at the ready on deck, grouped in threes around fixed linked soul tools, prepared at any moment to activate the soul tool system that symbolized the formidable power of the Sun Moon Empire's Soul Engineer Regiments.

In truth, the navy onboard the Sunlight and the hundred-thousand-year sea soul beasts that ruled the southern sea region of the Sun Moon Empire had developed a kind of unspoken agreement. Both sides would mobilize their forces on the day the Sunlight set sail and engage in a massive battle between sea soul beasts and the navy. The outcome of these battles would determine the scope of humanity's control over the sea.

There was no formal treaty behind this. It was simply a mutual understanding between powerful entities. After all, using controlled conflict to maintain the balance between humans and sea soul beasts benefitted both parties.

Of course, the sea soul beasts could choose to send their strongest to destroy the Sunlight outright. But doing so would provoke the fury of the strongest humans. There were only a few hundred-thousand-year sea soul beasts in the southern seas—they couldn't afford that risk.

"They're almost here, Captain."

Inside the captain's quarters of the Sunlight, the adjutant stood beside the helm and spoke with gravity.

Shi Dongsheng slowly nodded. With his cultivation, he could already sense the approaching presence of the sea soul beasts—an aura he was all too familiar with after decades of naval experience.

In fact, the ship's soul tool detection systems had already picked up countless red dots ahead, indicating sea soul beasts, and they were clearly visible on the monitor in the captain's room.

Once the order to reduce speed was given, Shi Dongsheng stepped up to the Sunlight's main control panel and slowly pressed a button.

"All hands, be advised. A large number of sea soul beasts detected ahead. Initiate Tactical Phase One immediately. Repeat: all hands, be advised. Large-scale sea soul beast presence ahead. Begin Tactical Phase One at once."

His voice traveled across the entire ship through the communication soul tools. The soul engineer soldiers, already standing by, immediately began channeling soul power into the fixed linked soul tools. Ten seconds later, a massive linked defense soul tool shield enveloped the entire Sunlight, created by the soul tools working in perfect sync.

Shi Dongsheng's command was both precise and efficient, conserving the soldiers' soul power. Just three seconds after the shield was activated, a chorus of deep buzzing sounds echoed through the water—the first wave of the sea soul beast assault had begun.

Countless savage sea soul beasts, ranging from the hundred-year to thousand-year level, hurled themselves against the shield with brute force. Each impact triggered a vibration in the barrier and caused the telltale buzz of soul power being drained and recharged.

These low-level soul beasts posed no real threat. Even given time, they might not be able to punch through the sturdy defensive formation. But this initial wave was a battle of attrition. The sheer number of sea soul beasts—veritable ants in their multitudes—could not be ignored. The Sunlight had to expend soul power to eliminate them, or else they would become a lurking threat when more powerful sea soul beasts arrived.

Countless cannon hatches opened on the Sunlight, launching waves of third, fourth, and fifth-level shock-type fixed soul-guided shells toward the attacking sea soul beasts. The shells exploded underwater, producing no bright flames, only ripples of powerful shockwaves that spread in all directions.

Where the shockwaves passed, low-level sea soul beasts were stunned, bled out, or even died as their bodies burst apart.

In the blink of an eye, a silent bloodbath unfolded beneath the sea. The corpses of countless sea soul beasts floated lifeless in the water, dyeing the ocean around the Sunlight a deep crimson. Soon, no more buzzing sounds came from the shield—it had gone quiet.

Some of the luckier thousand-year beasts tried to flee, but were instantly detected by the deck's sniper defense platforms and taken out one by one with high-explosive rounds.

Just one round of bombardment was enough to completely crush the sea soul beasts' first wave. This was the absolute dominance of human soul tool technology over low-level sea soul beasts.

Of course, it hadn't come without cost. The shield had lost about two percent of its energy, and ten percent of the lower-grade shock shells had been used up.

Inside the captain's quarters, Shi Dongsheng watched the screen with satisfaction as the dense cluster of red dots around the Sunlight steadily vanished—until finally, the area was clear. The large sea soul beast army in the distance seemed momentarily frozen, unmoving.

The shock shells launched by the Sunlight were part of a new line of military equipment developed by Mingde Hall in recent years. What used to require two volleys to clear now only took one. The sea soul beast commanders clearly hadn't anticipated this improvement, which was likely why the main force hadn't yet made a move.

But Shi Dongsheng had no intention of giving them that chance to regroup or receive new orders from a hundred-thousand-year beast commander. He immediately pressed another button and issued the next command in a deep voice.

"All hands, prepare for immediate assault. Initiate Tactical Phase One of our counterattack. Repeat, begin proactive assault—Tactical Phase One now!"
