Chapter 1633: Fun outside
After their intense training, Alex and Lilith decided a break was well-deserved. Exiting the hidden realm, they made their way into the nearby city, each cloaked in subtle glamour to keep from being recognized. Their powers, so fierce in battle, now lay dormant beneath ordinary clothes and unassuming appearances. The bustling streets were alive with evening lights, casting a warm glow over the city's narrow alleys, open squares, and lively marketplaces.
They strolled through the heart of the city, taking in the sights and sounds. Vendors called out to passing crowds, the scent of street food wafted through the air, and musicians filled the streets with energetic melodies. Lilith's eyes sparkled with the same excitement she wore in battle, though now softened by genuine wonder as she looked over the assortment of foods and trinkets.
"Hungry?" Alex asked, following her gaze to a stall where skewers of grilled meat sizzled over open flames.
She flashed a grin, nudging him. "I'd say I've earned a meal, wouldn't you?"
They both ordered and took their food to a nearby fountain, where they settled on the stone ledge, surrounded by the laughter and chatter of the evening crowd. For once, there was no urgency, no calculated strategy. It was just the two of them, enjoying a rare moment of peace.
As they ate, Alex watched Lilith out of the corner of his eye. In the soft glow of the city, she looked entirely different—still fierce, but without the sharp edge of their training ground. He realized that beneath her electric energy and fierce determination was someone who reveled in these simple joys.
"I didn't expect you to be so comfortable here," he said, a hint of amusement in his tone.
Lilith laughed softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "There's more to life than fighting and power. "
Alex paused, surprised by what she had just said as he hadn't expected such words coming from her.
She tilted her head, studying him.
"Don't look at me like that I'm also a living creature capable of thinking. Battle is not everything. It is something Necessary, yes. But they don't have to be everything." She motioned to the bustling street. "Sometimes, it's good to just be part of the world, not above it."
They fell into a comfortable silence, both taking in the scene around them. Eventually, Lilith broke it, a mischievous glint in her eye. Discover hidden tales at empire
"How about we have a little more fun?" she asked, pointing toward a nearby tavern. "If you think you can keep up."
Alex chuckled, feeling a spark of challenge stir within him. "Is that so? Don't blame me if you can't handle it."
They made their way into the tavern, where laughter and music filled the air, and found a spot near the fire. Drinks were brought to their table, and soon, they were caught up in the rhythm of the place, trading stories and laughs in a way they never could on the training field.
Inside the lively tavern, Alex and Lilith found themselves surrounded by the clinking of mugs, hearty laughter, and the faint strum of a lute. A quick glance around told them this was the kind of place where no one would bat an eye at a drinking challenge. Lilith raised an eyebrow, her lips twisting into a grin as she turned to Alex.
"Think you can handle a real drink, Time Lord, Black Prince?" she teased, gesturing to the bartender. He responded with a mock sigh, but his eyes held a glint of amusement.
"Only if you're prepared to lose," he shot back.
The bartender, catching wind of their challenge, brought over two large tankards filled with an amber brew that shimmered faintly, rumored to have a slight magical kick to it. The patrons nearby noticed the tension between them and began to gather, eager to see who would come out on top.
With a flourish, Lilith raised her tankard. "To a fair fight," she said, her tone dripping with irony.
Alex clinked his tankard against hers. "As fair as you can make it."
They both took their first long swigs, each maintaining fierce eye contact, neither willing to be the first to break. The crowd cheered them on, the patrons already placing their bets on who would last longer. The drink had a warm, almost fiery taste, and Alex felt it coursing through him, filling him with a surge of energy.
"Not bad," he remarked, setting his tankard down with a confident grin.
Lilith smirked, finishing her first drink. "Oh, I'm just getting started."
The rounds continued, each more intense than the last. With every mug emptied, their laughter grew louder, their playful jabs more relaxed. Alex found himself surprised by Lilith's resilience; she downed each drink as if it were water, her demeanor never wavering. He could feel the warmth of the alcohol working through his system, but he matched her pace, determined not to falter.
By the fourth round, their light-hearted banter turned into friendly ribbing.
"So, tell me," Lilith slurred slightly, smirking, "is it true you practice your 'serious face' in the mirror every morning?"
Alex chuckled, feigning offense. "Only to counter your 'menacing glare.' Figured I'd need to keep up."
She laughed, leaning forward. "Keep up? Alex, darling, you're trailing behind."
The crowd roared as they raised their fifth mugs, each one toasting to the other. But by the end of the sixth, they were both visibly wavering, the effects of the drink clear. Lilith squinted at Alex, her cheeks flushed. "You look blurry."
"You're blurry," he replied, laughing as they clinked their mugs one last time.
They drank together, neither willing to be the one to concede. But as they set down their final empty mugs, a sudden drowsy haze fell over them both. The tavern patrons cheered, declaring the contest a draw, and helped them to a corner booth where they could rest.
They sat slumped against each other, trying to fight off the effects of the night's drinking contest. Lilith managed a smile as she glanced at him. "I'll admit… you're a worthy opponent, Alex."
He grinned, leaning his head back, his voice softened by the haze of sleep. "Likewise, Lilith. But next time, I'll make sure you lose."
The warmth of the tavern, the laughter and clinking glasses around them, and their shared moment of camaraderie filled the space between them as they drifted into a light doze, both content in the knowledge that, for tonight at least, they were on equal ground.
